Chapter 61 — After the speech

***Harper***

I leave Alex's office and find myself immersed in a whirlwind of thoughts. Am I making the right decision by playing Alex's game? A part of me hesitates, questioning whether it's worth risking everything for such a fragile agreement; after all, on another occasion, he deserved to be sued for leaving me alone in a storm. But at the same time, I feel a slight relief both because the press conference was quick and because I shared about Sarah with him.

As complicated as it is, I know that Alex deeply loves Sarah. It's strange to admit, but seeing the impact of her tears brought me a sense of relief. Perhaps, deep down, I just want everything to go back to how it was before the accident: my uncle dealing with the company in the best way possible, without Alex's help; me, working as a dressmaker; Sarah marrying Alex, not me. Sarah being Laurie's stepmother.

The strong wind sweeping through the city lessens the summer heat and seems to reflect the turmoil in my mind, blowing doubts and uncertainties. Am I making a mistake by getting involved in this game of appearances? Or am I somehow finding a way to reconcile the past and build a better future for everyone?

As I make my way through the bustling lobby of the hotel, the deafening noise of slot machines and the lively voices of the customers echo around me, even during lunchtime. The flashes of journalists' cameras still persist but are contained by the few security guards present.

Surprisingly, I see that Alex has already arranged for a driver at my disposal. A feeling of discomfort mixed with gratitude overwhelms me as I realize how well he has organized everything. The driver comes to open the car door for me, but I extend my hand to open it before him and settle into the back seat. I thank the driver for his work before giving him the address of my uncle's house.

The driver skillfully navigates through the bustling city traffic as I allow myself to dive into the deep recesses of my thoughts. The madness that was in the casino hotel, with its electric atmosphere 24/7, contrasts with the serenity of the interior of the vehicle. Uncertainty hangs in the air, and I find myself questioning what the future holds for me and for Alex.

Arriving at my uncle's house, I feel a mix of relief and apprehension upon seeing that the garden has finally been tended to. Although it's not yet in its ideal state, there's a certain harmony between the plants and the structure of the house, something comforting to behold. As I approach, I see my aunt and Sarah sitting on the garden benches. My aunt is focused on her embroidery, while Sarah remains in her wheelchair, her gaze lost in the horizon.

I take a deep breath before advancing. As I approach them, I feel a mixture of emotions: joy at seeing them but also a distressing reminder of why I agreed to marry Alex.

"Aunt Dorothy, what a pleasant surprise to see you here, in this garden that is starting to bloom!" I greet, trying to hide the inner turmoil.

She welcomes me with a warm smile, and for a moment, everything seems lighter. However, as I look at Sarah, my mind fills with worries. Is she okay? Does she understand what's happening around her?

"Auntie, where's Uncle Leonard? Is he okay?" I ask, turning my attention to my aunt, seeking some reassurance.

She looks at me with a gentle expression, understanding my concern.

"He's at the company, busy as always. I'm sure he would be happy to know that you're here. Will you stay for lunch with us? He should be arriving soon."

I feel a momentary relief upon hearing her words, but I know that the battle my uncle fights for the family business is far from over. Sometimes, I wonder if it's a futile struggle. Accepting the fragility of those we love is difficult, but it's something we must face.

As my aunt continues to talk about Leonard's progress in the business, my thoughts turn to Sarah. Even without immediate answers, I continue to address her, hoping that somehow, my words can reach her.

As my uncle arrives, Sarah, auntie, and I are still in the garden. I can see the concern etched on his face as he approaches, his eyes flickering between us.

"Harper, my dear, how are you?" he asks, his voice filled with genuine worry.

Forcing a smile, I reply, "I'm doing as well as can be expected, Uncle Leonard. Thank you for asking."

After exchanging greetings, we head towards the kitchen. I assist auntie in serving while Leonard washes his hands and face before joining us at the table.

Once settled, my uncle hesitates before broaching the topic that weighs heavily on his mind. "Harper, I want to apologize," he says, his tone filled with regret. "I know it was my idea for you to marry Alex to save the family business, and for that, I am truly sorry."

My heart sinks as I listen to his words. Despite his remorse, the damage has already been done. The marriage to Alex is a burden I carry every day, a constant reminder of the sacrifices made for the sake of others.

Before I can say something, Sarah's tears steal our attention, her name stirring emotions we'd all rather ignore.

As Sarah weeps, a heavy silence falls over the room. We all know the pain she's endured, and none of us want to add to it. Without a word, we silently agree to change the subject, to shield Sarah from any further distress. As we continue our meal, I can't help but wonder if there will ever be a way to set things right.

As the conversation veers towards Sarah's emotional outburst, I realize it's time to bring it to a close. I stand up from the table, offering a reassuring smile to my uncle.

"I appreciate your concern, Uncle Leonard," I say softly, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Rest assured, I will ensure that the necessary investments are made in due time. And as for my marriage..." I hesitate, knowing the weight of my next words. "It won't be long before it's all sorted out."

My uncle nods solemnly, his expression one of understanding mixed with lingering guilt. I can see the regret in his eyes, but also a glimmer of hope for the future. With a final embrace, I bid farewell to my family, knowing that I have a promise to fulfill and a path to forge on my own terms.

As I make my way back home, the weight of my responsibilities hangs heavy on my shoulders. But amidst the uncertainty, there's a flicker of determination burning within me. I may have made sacrifices for the sake of others, but now it's time to reclaim control of my own destiny. And with each step forward, I draw closer to the freedom I so desperately crave.
