Chapter 57 — On the way
***Harper***
We glide through the streets, the morning sun casting its warm glow across the sky.
As we step into one of Alex's luxurious cars, I can't help but feel a pang of discomfort as I find myself arm in arm with him. It's a stark reminder of our complicated relationship – his cold demeanor towards me juxtaposed with my unrequited affection for him.
Once settled in the car, I can't feel a sense of discomfort being so close to Alex, both physically and emotionally. His cold demeanor always leaves me on edge, even as my heart still aches for him. To shake off such thoughts that leave me dazed, I start to analyze the car's interior, which exudes opulence, from the plush leather seats to the polished wood paneling those lines the cabin. Soft ambient lighting casts a warm glow, illuminating the exquisite craftsmanship of every detail. The air is infused with the scent of fine leather and delicate perfume, creating an atmosphere of luxury and sophistication.
As we glide through the city streets, the smooth purr of the engine serves as a soothing soundtrack to our journey, while the tinted windows shield us from the outside world, cocooning him in his own private sanctuary of wealth and privilege.
This morning, the sun has decided to take over the sky. Devoid of any clouds, as usual, the morning sun casts a warm glow over the bustling city. The streets are congested with cars, slowing down traffic to a crawl, a common sight at this hour. Amidst the hustle and bustle, I find it difficult to shake off the irritation sparked by Alex's comment.
His insinuation that I enjoy the limelight stings, leaving me questioning what image he holds of me. It's disheartening how he always portrays me as shallow, failing to see beyond the surface. I'm left wondering why he perceives me this way when I don't see myself as such.
Before I can address these concerns with him, I notice, out of the corner of my eye, that Alex seems unusually nervous. It's peculiar – he's typically cool and composed, even when being cruel or angry. Now, his hands fidget nervously, betraying his inner turmoil.
Alex attempts to initiate a conversation about what I'll say at the press conference. I take a moment to gather my thoughts before explaining my approach. I've decided to express how overwhelmed I am by Alex's power. It's a narrative that aligns with his expectations, a facade that masks the complexities of our relationship.
"Harper," Alex's voice breaks through my thoughts, drawing my attention back to him. "I think it's crucial that we present a united front to the press today. They need to see us as a team, supporting each other."
I nod, understanding the importance of maintaining appearances. "Of course, Alex. I'll do my best to convey that."
As we approach the location where he left me alone in the rain and darkness, the previous Saturday, the memories flood back, causing a pang of sadness to wash over me. The spot where the thief met her unfortunate end serves as a stark reminder of the events that led us to this point.
When we are passing by the gas station where I sought refuge from the rain last Saturday, I ask the driver to pull over. Alex, ever the pragmatist, questions the necessity of the stop, citing potential delays. With a touch of sarcasm, I reply, "Well, Mr. Montreal, it seems you're not the only one who dictates the timing."
His brows furrow in confusion, but I press on, my tone shifting to one of seriousness. "I spent the night in that gas station's convenience store, Alex. I need to settle the bill for what I consumed." Despite his protests, Alex relents, and we step out of the car, drawing the curious gaze of those around us. At the end, who enjoys the spotlight, in truth, is him; not me.
I notice all eyes on Alex as he takes my hand, feigning a gesture of chivalry or love. A shiver runs down my spine. So many times, I wished for this to happen for real, but now that it is, I know it's just a pretense.
Entering the convenience store, I look around for William to settle my debt, but I just see another young man.
"Excuse me," I address the attendant, "I'm looking for William. I need to settle my bill from last Saturday."
The attendant nods politely, his eyes shifting from me to Alex and back again. "William? Oh, he's off today," he replies. "Is there something I can assist you with?"
I glance at Alex, who appears increasingly intrigued by our conversation. "Um, yes," I continue, turning back to the attendant. "You see, I had to take shelter here during the rainstorm, and I bought some items. I want to pay for them now."
The attendant's expression softens slightly as he comprehends my request. "Oh, I see," he says thoughtfully. "Well, actually, if William allowed you to take something, it means he's already covered it. We don't usually accept payments in this manner."
Despite his explanation, I remain adamant. "But I insist," I assert, gesturing towards the items on the counter. "It's only fair that I pay for what I consumed."
The attendant offers a sympathetic smile, understanding my perspective. "I understand, but it's our store policy," he explains. "If you'd like, you can come back tomorrow when William is here. He'll take care of it then."
Reluctantly, I concede defeat, realizing that further argument would be futile. "Alright," I concede, a hint of frustration creeping into my tone. "I'll do that. Thank you for your help."
As we leave the gas station, Alex shoots me a questioning glance, clearly intrigued by the exchange. Despite my irritation, I can't help but appreciate his concern, however misplaced it may be.
Back in the car, I allow myself to get lost in thoughts, so I barely register Alex's attempts at conversation. It's only when he gently touches my arm that I snap back to reality, realizing we've arrived at our destination.
Stepping out of the car, Alex rushes to open the door for me, extending his hand for support. A barrage of camera flashes greets us as we make our way towards the building, the photographers outside eagerly capturing our every move. The uninvited journalists clamor for attention, bombarding us with questions in a frantic hope of being acknowledged. Despite the throng pressing in around us, we manage to push through with the assistance of the security personnel keeping everyone at bay. The presence of the local police adds an extra layer of security.
The press conference is set to take place in one of the opulent ballrooms of Alex's casino hotel. The grand entrance hall is breathtaking, adorned with shimmering chandeliers and a decor in golden hues that exudes opulence. Despite the splendor surrounding me, I can't shake off the discomfort of Alex's proximity, his body shielding me from the prying eyes.
Navigating through the elegant foyer, I can't help but feel overwhelmed by the grandeur of the surroundings. The air is abuzz with anticipation, the murmurs of the crowd blending with the soft music playing in the background. Alex's protective stance only serves to heighten my unease, his actions a stark reminder of our complex relationship under the scrutiny of the public eye.
