Chapter 266 Chapter 266
Chapter 266 Chapter 266
Hailey's POV
Kai was dropping Vincent off.
The joke literally wrote itself. I managed to convince Damien about Vincent but Kai was on another world on his own. A world out of my reach.
I knew he still harboured anger in his heart. He hated Vincent at an insane level of spite, he was only quiet because Damien gave an order not to kill him.
But what was going to happen if they had time alone? A chance where Kai would do anything to Vincent without supervision. Without having to report to anyone
“Are you sure Kai has to be the one? Can't Lorenzo go?” I whispered to Damien as we watched Kai start the car, his expression cold and unyielding.
“No, he has to be the one. Lorenzo has another job to do,” Damien replied, turning to me.
I spent hours restless over his decision. I trusted Kai, he was loyal, a good person with a good heart, but compromise wasn't really his best. Could his loyalty beat his anger? Was his respect for Damien bigger than his anger for Vincent?
I didn't think so.
“But what if he kills Vincent?” I asked, tugging at his sleeves. “I want to trust Vincent, I really do but this is something we shouldn't be banking on right now. Vincent shouldn't die, at least not in our hands,”
“Hailey, we just have to trust Kai. He knows this mission is important to all of us. He's not going to fuck this up, you just have to trust him,”
His words rang in my head but they never settled. They conflicted with my thoughts like oil and water.
As I watched him drive off, I could feel a sting of realization in my chest, a strike of certain doom. Was this how Kai felt about me? His inability to trust me because of my past actions. I once betrayed them and expected him to forgive me, now I couldn't trust him handling Vincent over to the police either.
His car hummed away and Sophia walked in along with her father, the both of them muttering silently to herself. Then Lorenzo followed next, though taking a different direction.
“Hailey, hey,” Sophia waved to a stop as Damien walked right in. “Are you going to stand there all day?” She asked. “Come on in, we got things to do?”
“What things?” I asked half-heartedly.
She leaped back and stopped a few inches away. “So for some reasons which I really don't care to know, we are going back to the city.”
I froze, eyes circling in my sockets. “But we are in the city.” I murmured.
“Yeah, but we are going back home. You know before Tyler and the whole shooting incident,” her lips curved.
“Now!” I blinked in surprise.
“Yes, so we'll need to take only the important things.”
We walked in together and parted ways to our different rooms. I carried my baby and cradled him in my arms for a while, cooing as he looked peaceful.
“Who's a good boy?” I touched his nose with my fingers, his laughter felt like a melody in my ears. He stretched his little arms to hold me and I couldn't help but laugh softly.
Time with my baby boy eliminated the worry I felt within me. I had to come to peace with the words of Benita; whatever will be, will be. Everyone has a choice to make. I wasn't any better because I folded when the pressure got too much to bear.
After a few minutes, I put him down and stood before my window. I thought of my mother and where she was. She hadn't reached out to me yet and I felt ashamed reaching back.
I just wanted to be sure she was okay, she wasn't hurting because I left her, I left a safe life to fall back into chaos, controlled chaos.
A soft knock echoed at the door seconds later. I walked over to open the door, plastering a smile over my lips as Marco greeted with his head bowed.
“Marco, you know you don't have to do that. Please stop it.” I said with a tiny voice.
“I'll try.” He replied, checking his watch and looking over in the direction of my baby's bed. “We are set to leave. We've gotten updates from Lorenzo,”
“Lorenzo?” I asked. “So that's where he went?” I thought about myself.
“And what about Kai? Any updates?” My eyes sparkled with interest only to be crushed the next minute with a disappointing response.
“Nothing yet.”
“Ohh,” my shoulders dropped and I moved back.
“But I'm sure we are gonna get some updates sooner.” He tried to cheer me up.
If only I got a chance to talk to Kai. If only I could hold a meaningful conversation before he left with his car.
“I trust we will,” I smiled. “I'm ready, just give me a minute to carry my son.
“I'll be waiting outside. We all are,” he said and I gently shut my door.
I came here with nothing and I was leaving with nothing. Nothing but fear. I didn't want to go back all of a sudden, the incident that happened there still freaked me out,but nobody complained.
“I'm not going to be the first one to wreck this,”
I gathered all the confidence I could and marched out of my room. My ears picked up faint conversations from the sitting room. The voice rose as I got closer until a statement made my heart pulse.
“You are not coming with us,”
It couldn't be about Benita. Damien never had any problem with her and she never actually stayed with us. I rushed forward in her defense but I stopped as I walked into a tense scene.
Amaris stood behind Isabella, her eyes teary but she struggled to hold them back. She gritted her teeth as I walked in and Benita walked over to me, whispering a few quick words.
“You picked the worst time to show up,”
“I want her to come with us,” Isabella hurled in anger, raising a finger at him and stealing my attention. “We cannot leave without her,”
“Mom, this is for the best. She can't be around us for now, I know why you brought her here. I know you are trying to match us together or something of that sort, but it's not going to work. I'm not interested,”
“Is this because of Sophia and her senseless rant? You definitely aren't thinking of going back to that traitorous wretch, are you?” She hissed, glaring in my direction. “I won't have it, Damien. She is no longer welcomed in our family. She ruined our name and complicated things. Open yours and see that I am helping you,”
“I do not appreciate your help, it's not what I asked for. I never asked in the first place. ” Damien's voice echoed in the room, though his focus was on Amaris. He was getting pissed off by his mother yet he controlled himself. He didn't want to hurt Amaris feelings, he valued her that much, but Isabella only made things worse.
“Then make a damn decision, son. Are you going to let an opportunist back into your life or your first love?” Isabella sneered.
