Chapter 261 Chapter 261

Damien's POV.

Vincent wasn't hazardous to me alone, his toxicity and cunningness cost the people around me too. Kai almost lost his life during our last altercation with the government authority, Lorenzo was wounded. Sophia got detached after Elena's death and Kai worked extra hard for the months I tried to crack the mystery behind her accident.

Years had gone by since Vincent kept playing us like puppets, playing me like a fool in the guise of being a loyal subject. Kai was right.

Vincent didn't deserve to live, he should have met his death since we locked eyes in his bedroom. The news should have been circulating with the information about his death instead of trying to cook up an excuse.

But I knew I had to be careful. I had questions that only Vincent could provide answers to.

“Let me get something straight with you, Kai. I want to kill him as badly as you do. I want to watch him beg for his life as much as you do, but we do not get everything we want in life,”

“Anthony is still out there,” I continued. “Deem him a threat or not, Luca is still out there. I bet he's trying to make a move now. We are smaller than we ever were. My elders are scared, my men are dwindling and my turf is being overrun, so yes, Vincent has to live for another second. He has to be alive for the information I need… information we need.”

“So Kai, do you want to kill him off now and waste a valuable resource in our hands? Or we can wait to get answers from him?” I snapped, my voice rising higher with every breath.

Kai cowered in defeat, his forefingers tapping the surface of the wheel. “Yes Boss,” he muttered.

“Good, now drive us home and keep your mouth shut if you want me to take the smart route with this,”

He nodded and glanced at Vincent behind him, his head reeling with a series of thoughts but he remained silent and proceeded to drive us home. He bowed his head in defeat and humiliation, probably realizing that I was right.

As much as the authorities weren't on our back, they were probably looking for a crime to pin on us so they could go back to hunting us like they did. I had to be smart about this.

A few hours later we got home and drove into our compound. Sophia paced outside in a circle, hands crossed with worry. She was waiting for me. A light smile almost parted my lips but it dissipated into silent gratitude as Hailey's curtains billowed shut as our eyes locked and she moved back.

She had probably been worried all day and was excited to see that I was back, but not enough to show it.

I got down from my car, wiping my sweaty palms as Sophia rushed in for a warm embrace.

“You're back,” she jumped, wrapping her hands around me. “What took you so long?”

“I never said I would be back early.”

“I know but… but… this time's different,” she stuttered.

“I'm fine. Everything went well,” I stroked her hair. She hadn't realized it yet, but she reminded me of how much she had grown from a little girl to an adult. I didn't know how much I missed her waiting on me until she finally came running into my arms like a sweet little girl.

“Take him out. We'll lock him in one of the empty storage rooms,” Lorenzo ordered.

Sophia quickly gasped as a guard lifted Vincent off the car. He was still unconscious but badly bruised. As a matter of fact, he looked like he wasn't going to survive the injuries on his body, but he had a strong will to live and a tough skin.

“You caught him?” She murmured, unaware that she said the words out loud.

“We did. It wasn't easy but we needed him alive.”

“I can't believe it.” She muttered, shaking her head. “I thought you'd… I thought he'd be dead already. He's a traitorous wretch.”

“I understand but we need him alive. For now,”

There was a brief silence between us until she smacked her lips and turned to me. “What are you going to do?” She asked. “I mean to him. If he's still alive, you need him for something, but when he's done giving you answers, what next?”

“We'll never know. Right now, answers are all I could think of. When I'm done getting answers then I will decide.”

“Alright,” she said with a reserved sigh.

A door opened and Hailey walked out, squinting her eyes and covering the top of her eyes with her palm. She walked up to us, managing to fake a smile.

“Hey,” Sophia greeted. “How are you doing?”

“I'm good.” We exchanged glances as she stopped before us, clasping her hands behind her back. “Can I talk to you?” She gaped at me.

Sophia smirked knowingly and swirled her hair. “Of course, I'll excuse the both of you, okay,” she said, leaving with a widening smile.

Certainly, I knew she got the wrong notion of why Hailey asked to talk to me privately. Watching Sophia walk away with a deluded almost made me crack a smile, but Hailey's killer stare kept my eyes rooted on her.

“What would you like to talk about? We have the room for ourselves… the atmosphere… compound,” I stuttered to a silence, tucking my hands in my pocket to stop them from twitching.

“Was that Vincent?” She asked, peering closer with interest.

“Yes.” I replied. “We caught him. Thanks to your information.”

I swallowed and exhaled again. “I don't think I got the right chance to thank you for…”

“I have some questions for him,” she uttered, balling her hands into fists.

I paused, raising my brows in curiosity mixed with surprise. What questions could she possibly have for him?

“Please, it's a request I need from you. I want to be there when you are questioning him.” she continued, leaning closer. “Can you do that for me? Please. I'll do anything,”

“Wh… why do you want to…. You do realize that I'm gonna have to torture him before he decides to speak. The scene is gonna be gory. I don't think you can stand it,”

“I can. I will,” she replied with a strange eagerness.

“But why? You could tell me the questions and I'll…”

“No, I want to ask him myself.” She insisted, pursing her lips.

I was conflicted for a moment. I could not possibly stand the thought of having her next to me as I tortured a man for answers. Could she even stand through the process? Why couldn't she tell me the questions? What did she have to say to Vincent?

I slipped my hands from my pocket and turned my back at her, rubbing my forehead with my right palm. It was a hard choice to make.
