Moonlight swallowed the clearing hole.
My paws slowed as I broke through the last line of trees, and the first thing that pulled my attention was the dark wolf standing like a shadow given form. Rowan. Built like a wall, black from nose to tail, those strange gold eyes catching me for a second before he dropped his gaze sideways, a quiet acknowledgment that the alpha standing beside him outranked everything else in this clearing.
Cassius shifted his weight and faced me. The marking pressed into his forehead by divine hands caught the glow of the dying moon and held it.
Neither of them was who I came for.
She emerged between them without warning, and the whole clearing seemed to hold its breath.
Tiny. Pale as fresh snow. Wrong in all the right ways.
Blue fire jumped and snapped along every strand of her coat, climbing from her tail upward, crackling at the tips of her pointed ears like a storm looking for somewhere to land. My instincts fired  but the second her eyes lifted and found mine, everything quieted inside me. Those eyes. Cold blue, deep blue, the color of ice over still water.
Whatever electricity lived in her fur, it would never touch us.
I stayed where I was for a moment longer than I should have, just looking at her. She belonged somewhere between a dream and a myth. The white of her coat wasn't fully white  there was blue underneath it, a ghost of the same shade as her eyes  and the lightning crawling across her slowly died away the way heat leaves the ground after a long summer afternoon.
My paws carried me forward before my mind gave the order.
She was already moving.
She crossed the clearing at a full run and something I had been clenching for weeks finally let go.
"Lucien."
One word through the bond and it cracked me open. Not the word itself, the feeling behind it. Pure and uncomplicated and aimed entirely at me. I pressed my forehead to hers and stayed there. We circled slowly, noses working, bodies brushing, trading our scents back and forth until the space between us smelled like both of us at once.
"Missed you, princess."
"I missed you back." Laughter threaded through it  easy, genuine, settling into the corners of my mind like something that had always lived there. "There is so much we need to say to each other. But not yet. The moon is still up. Take me running, alpha."
My wolf didn't think twice. I threw my head back and the howl ripped out of me, long and low, climbing into the dark sky above the trees. Voice after voice folded into mine from the pack around us  a chorus I felt as much as heard.
Almost complete.
Almost.
I pulled my focus inward, following the thread of the pack bond outward until I found the one that stretched too far, too thin.
"He should be here."
Her mood shifted, not sadness exactly, something layered. Pride sitting on top of something heavier. "He made the right call staying behind. Frost Fang isn't far. He'll be waiting."
Rational. True. Didn't help.
Luca and I had never spent this much time apart. Not once in our entire lives. We had been sewn together since we were old enough to run, two people who made more sense beside each other than anywhere else, and every day of this distance had been quietly wrong in a way I hadn't admitted out loud until this exact moment standing in this exact clearing.
Something dark climbed up through the grief before I could catch it.
Anger. Fast and stupid and already here.
My father had built that reflex into me brick by brick over years  turn every soft feeling into something with teeth. Knowing that didn't dissolve it. And the worst possible moment to let my temper off its leash was right now, standing inches from a mate bond that was still fragile in places, still finding its footing.
I swallowed it down as far as it would go.
"Move." My voice came through the bond with more gravel than I intended. Running would burn the rest of it off. It always did.
And it worked.
Three strides in and the darkness fell away completely. Wind in my lungs, earth under my paws, Selena a half-stride to my left glowing like something that had no business existing in the same world as ordinary wolves. My packmates pressed in at my flanks, and for the first time in longer than I wanted to count, the hollow feeling that had been living in my chest went quiet.
Relief rolled through the mate bond from her side  thick, genuine, almost too big to contain  and it answered something in me I hadn't known was still asking. Whatever damage existed between us, it wasn't permanent. We could reach each other. That mattered more than I had words for.
Something else reached me through the pack bond though.
Cassius felt tight. Coiled. Cautious in a way I recognized but couldn't immediately place. And Rowan  steady, unshakeable Rowan  carried something underneath his usual stillness that made me slow my thoughts and look twice.
Fear.
From Rowan.
I flooded the bond with calm and filed the question away for later. I had a feeling I already knew what sat at the center of it, him, and Selena, and everything that hadn't been said between them yet.
Then she bit my shoulder and bolted.
Gone. Full speed across the open clearing, coat blazing white under the half-moon like she was lit from inside. I went after her without thinking, my longer stride eating the distance between us  and just as I pulled level, just as I lined up to return the favor, she shifted.
New shifters forget about momentum.
Her body changed shape mid-run and her feet tangled immediately beneath her. I dropped my own fur in the same breath and lunged, getting my arms around her before the ground could, taking the fall myself with her tucked against me as we rolled to a stop.
We landed. She was warm. Unclothed. Alive in my arms.
My body reminded me sharply how long we had been apart.
Running beside her had only sharpened the want that had been sitting at the back of everything since I arrived. I needed her. Not just in the way my human body was currently making obvious  I needed the rest of it too. The bond completed. The distance between us closed for good.
"Selena." I steadied my voice as best I could. "I need you to know  your other mates, the bond you have with them  I'm not standing in the way of any of that. Be with all of them. I mean it."
She leaned back and looked at me, and the smile on her face was the kind that lives in the eyes first. She touched her collarbone and I followed her fingers to where two runes rested side by side, small and permanent.
Then she shifted in my lap and I saw it.
On her chest. A bite mark.
"Luca." His name left my mouth like a stone hitting water. "I told him"
Her finger landed on my lips before the words could leave them.
I could have bitten her for it. Part of me wanted to.
"Stop." A quiet smile lived at the corner of her mouth. "He claimed it was me. I claimed him right back. Nobody owes anyone anything."
The tight thing sitting in my chest loosened without permission.
"That's my girl."
Three words. That was all it took. Color rushed into her cheeks and warmth bloomed between her thighs, immediate and unmistakable, and my thoughts took a very specific direction.
"Your heat." I pulled her closer, voice dropping low. "He needs to be standing in front of me when it arrives. Not a day late."
She answered by pulling my face down to hers.
Whatever argument had been building inside me dissolved the moment her mouth met mine. Both arms locked around her and I hauled her flush against my body, her silver hair spilling over my hands like water. I kissed her slowly at first  then not slowly at all. Everything I had swallowed down across all those empty weeks poured out through that single point of contact. Her body rolled into mine, and the slide of her against me made rational thought feel very far away.
The sound of movement broke through the haze.
Cassius. Back in his skin, crouched beside us, shaking a folded blanket loose and spreading it flat across the grass with the calm efficiency of a man who had decided long ago that nothing about this situation required his anxiety. He dropped onto it, sat up straight, and looked at Selena with an expression that hit me somewhere unexpected.
Open. Unhurried. Completely without fear.
He had known from early on that she might never belong to just one person, that her heart ran wider than most  and he had simply decided that was fine. No wounded pride. No silent scorekeeping. Just a man entirely at peace with loving someone who loved beyond borders. There was a particular kind of power in that. The kind that didn't need an audience.
Selena left my arms and went to him like gravity had been pulling her there all along.
She wrapped herself around him completely with both arms, both legs, her whole body saying what her mouth didn't need to. The kiss they shared was the kind that comes from missing someone in a way you try not to show. It lasted long enough that I had to actively remind myself I had no claim on jealousy here.
I let the feeling drift past without feeding it.
Shifted forward onto the blanket.
My eyes moved to the tree line.
He was still there. Still standing exactly where he had been since we arrived, black fur blending into the dark at the edge of the clearing, watching everything with those gold eyes and not moving a single inch closer.
"Rowan." I kept my voice level. "Come here."
Selena's head turned. Whatever softness had been living in her expression packed itself up and left when she looked at him. The thing that replaced it had teeth.
"That right there," she said, and her voice carried an edge I hadn't heard from her before. "That is your alpha's permission. The one you have apparently been standing around waiting for. So move."
I filed that away.
"I assumed I was the only one who had something to answer for," I said, pressing my mouth to the top of her spine, walking it slowly upward. "How long has he been doing penance?"
Selena said nothing. Let out a breath through her nose.
Cassius looked deeply entertained. "She caved. A couple of times."
Which meant Rowan's feelings ran considerably deeper than his stillness had ever let on.
I curved my hand around her and heard her breath snag in her throat, and I kept my eyes on the motionless wolf across the clearing.
"She has been patient with all of us," I said quietly. "The least we can do is stop making her ask twice. Get over here and give her what she needs."
He came.
Slow, still wearing his fur, crossing the open ground toward us while Selena leaned the full weight of her back into my chest. My hands moved and she exhaled  low, barely audible, the kind of sound that doesn't ask for anything back.
I held her close and felt the last fractured piece of something settle into place.
Not just desire. Not just relief.
Something I hadn't let myself name until this exact moment was the specific peace that only comes when every person who matters is finally close enough to touch, and nothing between any of you is broken anymore.
