Joy arrived without ceremony, without warning, without the sharp edge she had learned to brace for. It didn’t announce itself or demand attention. It settled in quietly, like a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding finally being released. She noticed it one afternoon while standing in line at the grocery store, cart half full, mind calm. There was no particular reason for it. No message, no milestone, no reassurance from anyone else. And that was what startled her most.
For so long, happiness had felt conditional. It had arrived tied to someone else’s mood, someone else’s presence, someone else’s approval. It had been loud and fleeting, intense and unstable, disappearing as quickly as it came. This felt different. This felt steady. It didn’t rush her. It didn’t demand proof. It didn’t threaten to leave if she didn’t perform correctly.

A message came through while she sat there. Someone checking in. Someone kind. She read it and smiled, replying when she felt ready, not out of obligation but out of genuine desire. There was no anxiety attached to the exchange. No analysis. No fear of saying the wrong thing. Just presence.
That was when it became clear to her. Trusting joy was the final lesson. Not chasing it. Not clinging to it. But trusting that it could exist without collapsing. Trusting that good moments didn’t need to be interrogated. Trusting that peace didn’t have to be temporary.
Back home, she cooked dinner with music playing softly in the background. She danced a little in the kitchen, unselfconscious, unobserved. It felt natural, unforced. She wasn’t performing happiness. She was inhabiting it. The difference mattered.
