Chapter 31 What Remains After Goodbye
The days after closure did not rush to fill themselves with meaning.
They unfolded slowly, cautiously, as if testing whether she was ready to live without the weight she had carried for so long. There was no sudden happiness waiting on the other side of her decision. No dramatic sense of freedom. Just a quiet adjustment, subtle and persistent, like learning how to breathe differently after holding your breath for years.
She noticed it first in the mornings.
The panic was gone.
Not completely replaced by peace, but softened into something manageable. She woke up without the sharp jolt of anticipation, without the need to check her phone before her feet touched the floor. The silence no longer felt like something she had to interpret.

And she was learning to exist inside it.
At work, she found herself more present. Conversations flowed without the constant undercurrent of distraction. Her mind no longer drifted toward what she might say later, what she might fix, what she might prevent from falling apart.

“You seem different,” she said. “Lighter.”
She considered the word.
“Not lighter,” she replied. “Clearer.”
