Chapter 258 WITH HIM.
Chapter 258 WITH HIM.
\~~~RAINA.
The moment we landed, I already knew this place was going to be a problem.
Not because anything was wrong but because everything was too right.
The air was different the second I stepped out of the car.
It was warm, white, and clean in a way that made my chest feel lighter without permission.
A private villa sat ahead of us, tucked between palms and a wide stretch of ocean that looked too calm to be real.
For a second, I just stood there.
Then I straightened immediately, pretending not to get too carried away.
Luciano noticed.
Of course he did.
He always noticed everything.
“Breathe,” he said simply beside me.
“I am breathing.”
“No,” he glanced at me. “You are inspecting.”
I scoffed.
“I am assessing our environment.”
“That is exactly what I said.”
I ignored him and walked inside.
The villa was worse.
Worse in the best way.
It had open glass walls, soft white furniture, and a view of the ocean that looked like it belonged on a screen saver.
I immediately began walking through it, as if I were checking a property listing.
I checked the kitchen, bedroom, living area, and even security exits.
Luciano followed me slowly, watching as if I were a documentary he had already seen before.
“You’re doing it again,” he said.
“Doing what?”
“This.”
I turned sharply.
“This is called awareness.”
“This is called work brain.”
I opened my mouth to argue, then closed it again.
Because he wasn’t wrong.
A year ago, I would have walked in here and simply… existed.
Now I was calculating exits and communication lines as if I were still in a boardroom.
Luciano leaned against the wall and for a moment, he didn’t say anything and just watched me.
That kind of quiet attention he always had when he was thinking too much.
“You have changed, you know,” he said finally.
I raised a brow.
“That sounds like a complaint.”
“It isn’t.”
“Then what is it?”
He paused then pushed off the wall slightly.
“When I first knew you,” he said slowly, “you were nothing like the women in this world.”
“Tell me more,” I pressed my lips together.
He stepped closer.
“You were careful, reserved and you spoke like you were trying not to take up space.”
I looked away slightly at that because I remembered.
“I wasn’t trying to survive your world,” I muttered. “I was trying not to drown in it.”
His gaze softened a little.
“And now?”
I glanced around the villa again.
Then back at him.
“And now I apparently inspect luxury villas like I own them.”
A small smile tugged at his lips.
“Exactly.”
I frowned.
“That still sounds like an insult.”
“It is not,” he repeated.
Silence settled for a moment and then I sighed.
“How did we get here?”
The words came out quieter than I expected.
Luciano pushed his hands into his pockets.
His eyes didn’t leave mine.
“I remember the day you forced me to watch you kill someone,” I said suddenly.
He paused and then raised a brow.
“That is what you’re thinking about right now?”
“Yes.”
“Out of everything?”
“Yes.”
I shook my head slightly.
“I still remember that day.”
His expression shifted, just slightly.
“You didn’t run,” he said.
“I think you’ve forgotten. Bruh, I was so shocked to my core and nearly passed out.”
A faint smirk appeared on his face.
“That is still staying.”
I scoffed.
“I didn’t have time to process anything. One minute I thought I was in a normal… whatever we were, and the next minute you…”
I gestured vaguely.
“Did that.”
He leaned closer now.
“You adjusted quickly.”
“I had no choice.”
Then I added, softer, “And now I am here… with you… on a honeymoon.”
That made him actually laugh under his breath.
“Progress.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Regression.”
He stepped forward until he was right in front of me and close enough that my thoughts started to slow.
That was always annoying.
“You are different now,” he said again.
I tilted my head.
“Is that good or bad?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, his hand came up and lightly brushed a strand of hair away from my face.
“It is real,” he said finally.
I blinked. “What?”
“You are real now.”
I frowned.
“I was real before.”
“You were guarded before,” he corrected. “Now you are here.”
I didn’t respond immediately because I understood what he meant.
Even if I didn’t fully know how to accept it.
I looked away toward the ocean through the glass walls.
The waves moved slowly like they weren’t in a hurry to be anything else.
“I think I have become one of those women in your world,” I said suddenly.
That made him raise a brow. “What women?”
“The ones who don’t shut up. Don’t sit still. Always involved in everything.”
He smiled slightly. “You were always involved in everything.”
“I mean the dramatic part.”
“Ah.”
I nodded. “Now I argue for no reason. I question everything. I even negotiate vacation schedules like it’s a hostile takeover.”
Luciano’s lips twitched. “As if you’ve never been an advocate for arguing.”
“Excuse me?”
“Sunshine, you love drama and war. You were always ready for arguments and fights. You still are. Only the last one is accurate.”
I glared at him. “See?”
Then I sighed again.
“How did this happen?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he reached for my hand slowly.
“We survived too much,” he said quietly.
I looked at him.
“And that changed us?”
“Yes.”
He paused then said softly, “But you stayed.
Something tightened in my chest at that.
I looked down at our hands and back up at him.
“I think you’re the reason I stayed,” I admitted quietly. My fingers curled slightly where his hand held mine, like the words needed something physical to hold onto. “You will always be the reason I’m staying. Come rain, or sun… or thunder, as long as you are here… I am here.”
That made him still like the world had briefly gone quiet just so he could hear that properly.
Then his grip tightened slightly around my hand.
“Good,” he said simply.
I let out a soft laugh, shaking my head a little as I looked up at him.
“Is that your romantic response?”
“It works,” he replied without hesitation.
That made me smile more.
“Of course it does. Everything you do somehow works in your head.”
“It does,” he said again, completely unfazed.
I rolled my eyes gently.
Then my voice softened again, quieter this time.
“How did I end up here with you?”
Luciano leaned in slightly.
Not closing the space fully.
Just enough that the air between us changed.
“Same way I ended up here with you.”
My brow lifted.
“How?”
A faint smile touched his lips then. “Neither of us knew how to leave.”
That made silence fall between us again.
It felt like understanding finally settling into place.
Outside, the ocean kept moving like it had nothing to do with the lives that had fought so hard just to reach stillness.
For once, it didn’t feel like distance.
I exhaled slowly, as if something inside me had finally stopped bracing for impact.
Then I leaned into him without thinking like my body had already decided before my mind could question it.
Luciano’s arm came around me instantly, steadying me into him as if I had always belonged there.
And for once…
I didn’t look around the room.
I just stayed in his embrace.
His hand brushed lightly against my waist, grounding me there in a way that felt too simple to be dangerous and too certain to be temporary.
I tilted my head up slightly and this time, I didn’t hesitate.
I kissed him.
Luciano responded immediately, like he had been waiting for the moment without knowing it.
One hand lifted to my jaw, gentle but sure, holding me there like I might disappear if he didn’t.
I let myself melt into it, into him, and into the quiet that finally didn’t feel unfamiliar.
Luciano rested his forehead lightly against mine, his hand still firm at my waist like he wasn’t entirely convinced the moment wouldn’t slip away if he loosened his hold.
His voice came out softer than usual.
“Stay like this.”
I let out a faint breath that almost turned into a smile.
But instead of letting it end there, he didn’t move away.
He stayed close and then he spoke again.
“I used to think my life was already decided,” he said quietly. “That everything I would be was already set in motion long before I had a say in it.”
His thumb brushed slowly at my side, absentminded but grounding.
“But then you happened.”
I looked up at him a little more carefully now.
His eyes stayed on mine steady and unshaken.
“And nothing about you made sense in my world,” he continued. “You didn’t belong to it. You didn’t move like it. You didn’t think like it.”
Then, quieter: “But you still stood in the middle of it like you weren’t afraid of it breaking around you.”
My breath slowed.
He exhaled gently, like the memory of that realization still carried weight.
“I didn’t plan for this,” he admitted. “I didn’t prepare for it. And I definitely didn’t expect to want it.”
A faint, almost invisible smile touched his lips.
“But I did.”
His hand shifted slightly at my waist, pulling me just a fraction closer.
“Now I can’t imagine anything that doesn’t have you in it,” he said simply. “Not the chaos. Not the silence. Not even the peace.”
He leaned in a little more, his forehead still against mine.
“And I don’t want a version of my life where you’re not beside me,” he finished quietly. “Not as something I have to protect from it… but as someone I walk through it with.”
His gaze softened slightly then, almost like an afterthought, but not really,
“So yes,” he murmured. “Stay like this.”
I swallowed softly, my fingers tightening slightly where they rested against him.
“I’m here,” I whispered.
And I meant it in a way I had never meant anything before.
Fully, completely, and without looking for an exit, I am here with him.
