CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FOUR

The glittering ballroom of the Grand Marquis Hotel sparkled in the spilling light of crystalline chandeliers, its marble surface tracing half-harmonies in the shadow. Well-dressed guests loitered, their laughter and murmurs mixing to form a sweet din of high society. The moment the doors opened, Caspian Montague stood waiting at the foot of the grand staircase beneath the chandelier, his emerald eyes scanning the guests, worry and conviction etched into his features. His silver-gray hair was slicked back neatly, and his midnight-blue suit was tailored to perfection; even the cuff links were diamond encrusted, which demonstrated his unwavering commitment to Hayes Enterprises.

Soren Montague approached him with deliberate slowness, hair dulled with polish and darkened, his icy blue glance dancing with purpose. And now he was holding out a hand, a smirk flitting across his lips. "Caspian, it's been too long. "I believe it's time to start trying to repair our very broken relationship for the sake of the company."

Caspian hesitated, emerald eyes narrowing as he gauged his brother's sincerity. "Mend our relationship? After all that you've done?"

Soren's smile widened, his voice smooth and persuasive." "I understand how you feel, but we both know that Sterling Price is a much bigger threat. His machinations have done enough damage as it is. Let's also join forces as a greater whole and fight his corruption."

With suspicion rising in Caspian, he knew very well the types of Assets the evidence Soren claimed to possess could have. "How can I trust you? How can you expect me to trust you with the way you've been killing my donkey?"

What Soren did next, his eyes are blazing. "Not just breaking down, Caspian. Strategically positioning. I have documents that show that Sterling was involved in criminal financial activity. Now we can finally get him for good.'"

Caspian's heart leaped, the idea of reclaiming control so appealing but oh so treacherous. He glanced around the ballroom, confirming the absence of prying eyes in their private little chat. "And what do you charge for this assistance?"

He had a smile that might have been smug and reassuring or perhaps a touch nauseating and menacing. "A public reconciliation. "This is a statement of solidarity between us — me and z". You will send a strong message to Sterling and the board that Hayes Enterprises is strong with your leadership and my support."

Caspian struggled with this, the burden of command sitting heavily on his shoulders. "This could be a trap, Soren. "Sterling has no mercy, and you have already shown that — you're still alive — so you are not free from manipulation."

Soren had a glint of malice in his eyes. "Sometimes, son, it's more useful to keep your enemies alive than dead. "Trust me on this, and together, we can secure the future of Hayes Enterprises."

Caspian opened his mouth to respond, but the sound of a grating laugh cut him off, slicing through the ballroom. Slicked back and dressed to the nines, Sterling Price slinked by with a predatory grin. "Well, well, Caspian. Plotting behind your brother's back? How charming."

Caspian's devilish green irises shimmered with fury as he met Sterling's gaze, their tussle for magnitude escalating to a treacherous level. Soren's promise was a breath caught in midleap — irresistible yet too carcinogenic what he offered their fates to bask in.

Out of the chaos of Hayes Enterprises and into the serenity of the Montague estate's library. The shelves were full of leather-bound books, and there was a crackling fireplace, an altogether tranquil place, except for the tension between Caspian Montague and Celeste Montague, which was inescapable. Celeste stood at the broad window, her red-brown hair spilling over her shoulders, her green eyes full of terror and determination.

Caspian lounged in a high-backed chair, eyes distant as if emeralds, surely weighed down with the emotional fallout of the last few days. Taking his hand gently, Celeste drew closer. "Caspian, please. Don't make a deal with Soren. It's a trap, and he's using you to further his agenda."

Caspian's jaw tightened, his pride and frustration emanating from him. He pulled his hand back and stood up fast. "You don't know, Celeste. Soren knows something that could help beat Sterling at his own game. "We can't miss this moment."

Celeste leaned in, her emerald eyes sparkling with unshed tears as she spoke low, barely audible. "I do understand, Caspian. My worry is that your siding with him is putting the company at risk and jeopardizing our relationship as well. You've always been the strong one, but I need you to let me in, to fight this with me."

Caspian could feel his gaze drop to the sparkling lights of the city below. "How am I supposed to fight for us if you won't let me in? The board is fracturing, and the company is teetering. I have to make the tough calls, and you can't be involved in that."

Celeste's hands trembled as she reached out again, her auburn hair shimmering in the firelight. "If you trust him over me, the battle is lost already. Hayes Enterprises, you can do better, and we as a people can do better. Don't let pride come between us when everything is on the line."

Caspian's green eyes caught hers, a quick flicker of uncertainty crossing through his features before he turned his head. "I have to do what's right for the company, Celeste. Sometimes that means making difficult choices, even if those difficult choices mean moving on without us."

Then just silence, deafening, his words taking up space and using it to suck up the air between them, Caspian doubling down on the wall above his head. Celeste felt the chill of the weight of their responsibilities and the dread of betrayal yet to come, standing ragged, heart in hand alone, identifying the coldness roiling between all of them.

Soren Montague's game ran in the luxurious boardroom of Hayes Enterprises, one where tension always lay below the polished veneer. A thick, modern art hung on the wall, and a glass table stood in the middle of the room. Board members sat in high-backed chairs, their faces a mix of loyalty and skepticism as they awaited Soren's next move. Roman Martinez was standing by the window, his dark hair slicked back in a slick cut, his piercing blue eyes pinching up, scanning the room in widening circles of worry.

Soren stepped in, his dark hair slicked back and green eyes brimming with ambition. He strides to the head of the table and turns every head. "A few words, ladies and gentlemen," his voice smooth and persuasive, "are in order to ensure the stability of Hayes Enterprises in these trying times. We must realign toward our core business and our roadmap to sustainable growth."

He paused, letting the words land before adding, "I suggest a heartless restructuration in the way we allocate our resources that guarantees our better-performing departments continue to be catered to." "This will help us to have strong foundations of our finance and market to be protected from external threats."

Roman watched board members shift their loyalties, and the beginning of Soren's manipulation was so obvious even Roman could see it. He caught Talia Montague in a glance, the woman with the green eyes, quietly seated in the corner, ever-attentive.

Soren's voice had an air of finality when he finished his proposal. "To better position Hayes Enterprises for our ongoing success and resilience, we are enacting these changes. This is an important step to stay in the game and protect our future.'

While board members deliberated Roman plowed through the panic while Soren difficult puzzle over the other side forming like a clock. He checked in, silently uncrossing his legs and tapping his phone to refresh Talia's updates; a new message had just come through: "The vote is already decided."

Soren's sharp blue gazed into his bright green when the new power crashed over him like a wall of water. Soren's smirk was self-satisfied and more than a little smug but a world away from the cooperative front he had put on earlier. It was airless in the boardroom, treachery closing in around Roman as he understood the breadth of what the conspiracy against him was. Now, it was a grim contest for Hayes Enterprises, with the tenuous alliances that had formed now hanging by the thinnest of threads.
