CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THIRTY

Beneath the shining chandeliers studded in diamonds, the opulent ballroom of Langston Tower shimmered with its own intrinsic luminance, adorned with the golden rosettes and frills of material pleasures. The crystal music of glasses clinking, the gentle, harmonious hum of conversation – of aspirations and secrets. Talia Montague glided through the room, auburn hair falling in luscious waves, her wild emerald eyes alight. Roman Martinez followed closely, perfectly styled coal-dark hair and ruthless, sky-blue gaze scanning the area for their quarry. Gregory Langston was grinning near the grand piano, making himself the attention, utilizing body language to symbolize his power. His tailored suit emphasized his every movement, observant emerald eyes gleaming. A flawless pretense of friendliness coated Talia's tone as she approached.

"Gregory, what a pleasure to see you here. Your support, I must say, has been integral to our recent endeavors.". Langston returned the smile briefly, eyes veiled with ideas. Making a well-practiced neglected gesture with a hand, he replied, smiling: "Likewise, Talia. Indeed, thanks to strategic partnerships like ours, Hayes Enterprises is thriving as well."

The unsuspecting father began covering the subject of the girl, voice relaxed and investigative as she commented: "Sterling, he somehow let himself make some brash investments lately.

An eager-beaver, for sure, but it has me wondering how he plays the long game." Langston's tone darkened with just a bit of a sarcastic edge of laughter as he answered: "Sterling has always been a fan of boundaries."

Then, eyes stabbing her briefly, he added: "although, I must admit, his communication methods leave something to be desired at times." In the shadow, standing snuggled as close to the high-quality audio recording device as he dared, Roman listened, heart racing in his chest – the hunted, the prey speaking mere meters apart. Keeping her voice low, using the opportunity to let the bartender in on their ploy, Talia gave a little smirk and said: "Dishonest, you could say. I've even heard rumors of how he gets his contracts.

But I enjoy watching it, even more, how he scampers his way through the corporate jungle." The dean's smile dimmed somewhat, narrowing his eyes as he said: "Claim manipulation is classic, Talia. Sterling plans a combat catching game by coincidence."

Just when the conversation seemed ready to escalate further, Sterling Price walked in — his dark hair tousled as if he'd just come from a raucous party. His frigid blue eyes had fallen on Talia and Langston, a smug smirk pulling at his lips. "Good morning, Talia, Roman," he crooned, his voice dripping with a majestic confidence. "Enjoying the gala?"

Talia steadied herself with her emerald eyes locked on the slate of Sterling. "Absolutely, Sterling. The event is spectacular."

Sterling chuckled, his laughter edged with cold. "I'm glad you think so. And speaking of spectacular, did you hear the latest on the intrigue at Hayes? A lot of buzz, no?"

An icy shiver ran down her spine, the trap she'd worked so hard setting was now but a few brush strokes from being discovered. The tension in the room was hard to miss as Roman held tightly onto his recording device. "Yeah, it's impressive" Talia replied calmly, no crack in her voice despite the atmosphere.

Sterling's eyes bore into hers, his smile never wavering. "Careful, Talia. In these settings, conversations can be quite revealing."

As Sterling half-turned to mix with the other guests, he found Talia's emerald eyes for the last time, a wordless warning crackling between them. The notion that they'd been lured had punched her square in the gut. The hazards of their mission became bright as day, and Roman inhaled shallowly.

He sat in his office amid the sterile cubicles of Hayes Enterprises as the office bustled in a frenzy, preparing for the shareholders' meeting to seal their fate. His emerald eyes were locked and the city skyline was outlined through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind him. Céleste Montague, her auburn locks perfectly frosted, bustled through the room, directing staff for the finishing touches. The air crackled with anticipation, the tension never higher.

Celeste walked up beside Caspian, worried in her green eyes, as he practiced again for his presentation. "Caspian, I discovered something troubling. Langston is the devil in the details, prepared to sabotage the meeting from the inside. He's playing important people off each other to weaken you."

Caspian clutched the folder in his hands, his heart racing. "How? What exactly has he done?"

Celeste touched him reassuringly on the shoulder. "Langston has triggered a cascade of lies, positioning false agents within our own ranks to sow his discord. If he wins, it could ruin everything we've worked for."

At that moment, the office door opened, and Gregory Langston came in, dark hair slightly mussed after having quickly left the gala. His azure blue eyes—like Caspian's—held a smug certainty. "Caspian, always a pleasure. "Ready to lead Hayes into its next chapter?"

Caspian straightened his back, his emerald hue narrowing. "Langston, this ends now. We are prepared for anything you throw at us."

Langston smiled smugly and leaned against the door frame.Tomorrow, it's all gone."

Before Caspian could respond, the board members began to trickle in, their faces a mix of support and hesitation. You could feel the tension crackling in the air inside the room, the temporary alliances on the verge of crumbling, the threads that held them together frail and slowly fraying under the weight of Langston's manipulation. Caspian's mind was racing, sensing the dread of his foes drawing closer.

As the clock ticked down to the start of the meeting, silence charged the air in the room, the fate of Hayes Enterprises in the balance of madness. Never had the tussle for authority been so volatile but also so conclusive.

Only the gentle tick-tock of antique clocks can be heard echoing in the grand halls of the Montague estate, so darkened on the eve of the shareholder vote. In his opulent study, where only a single desk lamp broke the darkness, Soren Montague alone spoke. His styled dark hair and deep blue eyes were cold and calculating, and he reviewed the finishing touches of his most nefarious scheme to date.

With a smirk, Soren burrowed out of the secure network, starting the leak of classified documents meant to take down Caspian Montague. They were elaborate, building false evidence all allegedly tying Caspian into a fictitious criminal conspiracy. The files were then to be given to major news organizations and distributed to power players to maximize impact and damage.

The final command was issued, and Soren reclined back in his chair, euphoria flooding his senses. "This will ensure your death, Caspian. Hayes Enterprises will crumble, and I alone will rule."

Behind them, at the more salacious end of the city, news of the Hayes Enterprises scandal dropped like a bolt of lightning. "Hayes Empire on Brink — CEO Involved in Criminal Cover-Up" was the headline that snarled over TV screens and online platforms. Stealthy for Billions. The news reverberated through the company and the financial world, as investors pulled their funding and employees faced the question of how they can trust their leader.

Caspian Montague stared in disbelief in the now-riotous boardroom, transfixed by incendiary headlines flashing across his phone. From that point on, there was chaos in the room, with board members shouting and struggling to understand the shocking turnaround. Next to him was Celeste, her russet hair rakishly tousled, and her jeweled-green eyes burning bright with fear, resolve, and rage.

"Soren," Caspian hissed through gritted teeth, his mind racing to find two and two and make them equal four. "He's behind this. He's framing me."

Soren kicked in the door, and I saw cold satisfaction on his face before he could work. "You see, Caspian? The empire is mine. Your past is a stain that will always stain your legacy."

Caspian's heart rattled at the sight of his brother full in the gaze, realizing that Soren's treachery had finally come to pass. Hayes Enterprises was now teetering on the edge, full destruction looming as its future and shadows of betrayal and manipulation darker than they had ever been.
