CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-NINE

As the night trudged forward, the faces at the longboard table became muddy with apprehension; polished mahogany glinted in the flickering halo of recessed chandeliers, speckled throughout like fireflies that had fallen inside the room. Board members sat in high-backed leather chairs, their expressions masks of concern and skepticism. Caspian Montague stood at the head of the table, his emerald eyes darting around the room nervously. His charcoal suit, which was beautifully tailored, was on point — but the tension in his shoulders betrayed the internal fight he was waging.

A low murmur rippled through the assembly as one of the senior board members cleared his throat. "Mr. Montague, you have been plagued by rumors of a sealed criminal record in your past. "We need transparency around these allegations to protect the integrity of the company."

Tender memories of the past, the garbage of his previous life, played before him thick and fast, and Caspian felt his heart pounding in his chest. He took a deep breath and tried to speak with steadiness. "I have no knowledge of any criminal record. All the allegations, not all, every one of these allegations are false and fabricated."

Another board member, his face taut, leaned forward. "We have documents that prove otherwise. The records indicate a history of financial impropriety dating back decades. Can you clarify these discrepancies?"

Caspian's emerald gaze met Valentina Price's — her auburn hair expertly sculpted and pinned back in a look of utter encouragement. "These are falsified documents," Evans testified. Soren has been working behind the curtain to destroy me, altering proof to accuse me."

There were mutters in the room, board members exchanging dubious glances. Soren Montague, across the table, his dark hair styled to perfection, smug smile on his lips. He looked on as the bedlam unfolded, his blue eyes lit up with malevolence.

Almost imperceptibly, Caspian's hands quavered as he shifted to grab what looked like a file full of counter-evidence. With a deep breath, he slapped down a small stack of papers, one after the other, as each page recounted with tedious documentation the ways Soren tricked and swindled and conned. "These are all the records we have of every time Soren lied to everyone in this fiasco in an attempt to take the company from me. I assure you, they are all true". As each board member pored over the evidence, none of them would accept it as the truth, but Caspian could feel the hope bubbling around him once more. His confidence was coming back together as each piece slipped into place. But none of them had more than a moment to mull over anything as Soren collapsed again, and horror crossed his face. With a snarl and a flash of arrogant frustration, Caspian rose, his resolve growing. "He's gambling our high with my past, and these are the newest chips in his climbing efforts to destroy every last achievement I've made." Then he shut the file with a bang and fixed Soren with a seething glare. The room fell silent again. The battle over Hayes Enterprises had reached a new level of danger as Soren's shadow of betrayal crossed the promise of promise. In the study, nobody visited; the table inside the Montague estate cast flickering, elongated forms. Celeste Montague, her auburn hair in waves, her sad, determined face barely visible in the shadow cast by the desk lamp filling the room from the one window, stood against the wall. The dark mahogany furniture combined with rows upon rows of books gives the room a comfortable, elegant aura, perfect for the arguments ready to be made in the attorney's haven, arguments that may rip their family apart.

Soren Montague walked into the room, hair as dark and tousled as a raven's wing, sharp blue eyes cold and unblinking. He lounged in a sort of perverse slouch against the big wooden desk, malevolent in a way that sent a tremor up Celeste's spine. "Celeste," he began, with a smoothness that belied the malice in his eyes, "we need to talk about these alleged scandals you've been spreading. "To go to such lengths to fabricate evidence that would tarnish my name is below even you."

Celeste sucked in a breath, her jade eyes landing on his with unwavering belief. "I'm not inventing anything, Soren. These papers shed light on how far you've quieted and misled Hayes Enterprises. How many more lives must you ruin before you're happy?"

Soren's smile was thin, a bit of mischief flashing in his eyes as he stepped closer. "Every man has sins, Celeste. I just polished yours up for all to see." It's a dog-eat-dog world in the corporate jungle."

Before Celeste could respond, Soren opened his desk and pulled out a photograph, sliding it across the gleaming surface. Caspian looked so good on the cover of that magazine, and that photo was so carefully arranged that the damage pierced through him too deep and too quick, that photo of him with some stranger from the depths of here he had covered in ash during the scrubbing of his past.

Celeste's emerald green eyes widened in disbelief, and she gripped the photo, her hand shaking slightly. "What is this, Soren? How did you—"

Soren interrupted, condescension dripping from his voice. "Just making sure we cover all bases, Celeste. You know better than I that looks matter in this game more than anything. Your son's reputation all the time and my position in ensuring that."

Celeste's hands shook as she looked back up, her resolve steeling in the face of the personal attack. "You won't succeed, Soren. We will expose everyone, and Hayes Enterprises will triumph over your maleficence."

Setting his jaw so it wouldn't quiver, he held Soren's gaze, icy blue eyes drilling into hers, a thin warning lying beneath it. "We'll see about that. The noose closes tighter and tighter, and before long, you will learn that to cross me was a serious error in judgment."

He turned, leaving the room, the  fabric of his receipt following Lui like a shadow. Celeste held the devastating photograph in silence, knowing that the path to atonement and amity lay now entangled with treason over her heart.

Hayes Enterprises — the sharp conference room hum of strategic negotiations in low murmur and of gentled clink of crystal. Talia Montague and Roman Martinez stood toward the front, their faces dour and intense as they prepared to present their findings to a handful of key investors. This semi-dark room, with its modern art and state-of-the-art technology, was a perfect nest for their dark task to change sides and put Sterling's financial manipulation out in the open.

Talia's auburn hair was slicked back tight, and her green eyes scanned the area with pinpoint focus. Roman, his dark hair slicked to maddening perfection, stood beside her with an imperious stillness, his blue steel eyes F-ing meeting the investors' confident stare. But as the stakes climbed higher than ever, they uncovered the threads of deception that Sterling Price had spun.

"We have uncovered serious financial wrongdoing here with Hayes Enterprises," Talia began, her voice powerful and commanding. "Some of these manipulations have not only endangered our financial health but also jeopardized the very integrity of our operations."

Roman pushed a button on a remote, and a slide of charts and graphs was displayed on the large screen behind them. "You see, the discrepancies lead directly to Sterling Price being involved in them. His machinations have all been the means to - 163;387; a series of cash funnels — numerous, convoluted offshore 463;159; and choking our economic vitality - 463;184; all while glossed over with a veneer of solvency."

The investors sat hunched over, their expressions shifting from shock to alarm as they took in the evidence spread out in front of them. Talia's emerald eyes shining intent, her unyielding stance giving the board members trust. On hearing this, Roman announces, voice angelic, "That is why we present this evidence, to be, like, sure of your ongoing patronage and to inform whoever became misled away from the noble path of transparency and accountability it's in the company leadership."

At the moment when the presentation was reaching a climax,  some of the staff of Sterling Price burst into the room, whose black hair was slightly disordered from riding. His emerald eyes searched the crowd as he swaggered with a cocky grin toward the front table.

"I'm Talia, Roman," Sterling said, his voice smooth and soaked in condescension. "Great presentation, but let's ignore the specifically falsified evidence against Roman right here. That's what you call insider trading, isn't it?"

There was a silence in the room, and the investors looked at each other and at themselves, confused and filled with doubt. Roman's expression hardened, his fierce blue eyes narrowing as he faced Sterling down. "Sterling, your foundationsless accusations are stating and your money manipulations too simple," he wrote in Ibis. All of this, so we have the proof of evidence that you did not do wrong; you can't dismiss us."

Sterling laughed, a cold, threatening sound that sucked the heat from the room. "Oh, Caspian, Roman. Do you really think you can outsmart me? The game is still on, and I've got all the tricks up my sleeve."

As the showdown unfolded, a powerful board member leaned forward, his voice cracking with questioning. "Who can we even trust now? It's hard to know what is real and what is not."

Talia's emerald gaze met his, steady like iron. "And we're here to stand up and speak the truth and make sure Hayes Enterprises is a beacon of integrity. Trust in our evidence and trust in our leadership for a better tomorrow."

But the seeds of doubt had been sown, and the room was divided, unsure. Sterling's shadow was never far away, an ever-present reminder of the precautions they must both take in a tricky partnership. The war for Hayes Enterprises was entering a new and deadly chapter, the weave of lies threatening to entrap them all in a deadly web.
