CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN

As evening approached, lights in the Montague mansion's marble columns dimmed, giving the surrounding space a warm glow. The air was cool that night, and the sounds of the city blared miles down the road from those sprawling grounds. Caspian Montague approached the door at a measured pace, his well-tailored charcoal suit crisply pressed and no doubt never out of reach of top-tier dry cleaners, green as tempered steel and neon moss.

As he soaked up the light flooding over the threshold, Celeste Montague swung open the thick oak doors. Her auburn hair tumbled around her in soft curls, zipping between the house-cool light of the living room and the evening warmth of the street, and her piercing green eyes swirled with rest and leftovers of the day. But the gulf between them, born of necessity and strategy, had become unbridgeable until Caspian crossed it in the time it took to draw a breath, wrenching her into a close embrace that was as out of character for him as it was for her.

He could feel him, too, the power and the need in his grip, in his touch, a wordless plea unlike any other. "Not breaking," Caspian said, low, emotion thick in his voice. He held her tight, didn't move, and they clung to each other while their worlds fell apart.

She looked up at him, her emerald eyes searching his for reassurance. "I've missed you," she said, her voice trembling with the weight of everything they had been through.

Caspian's gaze remained fixed on his. "We've gone through hell together, and we will tackle whatever comes next united."

Their reunion was a refuge, a brief respite from the maelstrom surging outside of their personal and professional lives. But as they waited in the hush, their calm was shattered by the sound of a car engine 300 yards away. Celeste hurriedly gazed out the big windows, her instincts telling her things were off.

A dark black sedan was parked penguin-style, blocking the driveway, vanitas to the dark. The headlights cast long shadows over the manicured lawn, the occupants cloaked but more than likely watching you in every last detail. It sent a shiver through Celeste to realize they were being watched during their reunion.

Caspian fell back, his expression hardening as he took stock of the danger. "We've got to be on our toes," he said, his emerald eyes locked on the car. Its effect was palpable, a new layer within the fragile trust between them, the spectres of betrayal closing in.

The mansion held its breath as the night wore on, the walls resonating with the fears left unspoken now bound to their desperate new hope. As the black muscle car flew past the pair, the echo swallowed the silent gap between her and Kasen, but instead of enjoying a classic back-and-forth bit of banter, she felt nauseous and afraid. "Caspian", she thought, fully aware that the fight over Hayes Enterprises was only just beginning, and whoever they were had their sights set on blood to ensure all the things Caspian and Celeste had ever fought for lay in the hands of the remaining scum.

The great study of Sterling Price contained the tension that swept the room. The walls were lined with dark wood panels and expensive art, imparting an air of sophistication and power to the space. Talia Montague approached Sterling with a crown of shiny auburn locks and emerald green eyes sparkling with outrage and determination. Her muscular body crackled with anger, her body defiant in front of her father.

"Sterling, this isn't over," Talia spat, and her voice cut through the air. "I refuse to sit here and watch you warp and destroy everything we've built."

Sterling sank into his leather chair, his black hair slicked back, his ice-blue eyes cold and calculating. "I am the way, and if you're not with me, you're against me," he said, smooth, machine-throated, emotionless. His words cut with a challenge, piercing Talia's system of belief.

Talia took a deep breath, her hands balled into fists at her sides. "You attempted to sully our family name and Hayes Enterprises. I am done helping you with your ruses."

Sterling's smile was thin, even predatory. He took out a thick folder from the drawer of his desk and shoved it across the table to her. "You think you can expose me? It contains encrypted documents implicating Caspian of white collar and financial crimes — almost certainly false, for the singular purpose of vilifying him and securing my position of influence."

Talia's emerald eyes narrowed as she gripped the folder, her wariness at work to comprehend the new threat. Until the shock of what Sterling had done to undermine Caspian crashed into her." She raised her eyes, steeling herself. You're not getting away with this, Father. I 'will expose you for the liar and manipulator that you are.'

Sterling was tall, and he towered over her as he stood. "We'll see about that, Talia. You will feel consequences you cannot begin to imagine."

Suddenly, Talia turned to leave, and the air became thick and heavy with the tension of their relationship. The room seemed frostbitten. She also realized that those encrypted files were a weapon and that Sterling's schemes were more devious than she ever imagined. The biggest betrayal had now been revealed, and the path to justice now held the greatest peril yet.

For the first two weeks, the halls of Hayes Enterprises were an uncomfortable blend of the ho-hum and the freaking out. Roman Martinez walked around his office, a tight lump of heavy discovery in his stomach. Dialling Caspian and Celeste, their numbers and only two, Nevin's intensified cold blue eye with a layer of frustration and urgency, having to protect the organization from this unseen force.

The phone at the other end of the line rang in Roman's ear as he sat at his desk, scanning the latest reports; the encrypted files Talia had brought him suggested a far broader network of sabotage at Hayes Enterprises than he'd anticipated. The implications that Sterling Price, in a shocking web of deceit, may have blazed down his own twisted path farther than they had dared believe bled up to the most senior of figures and threatened to tear the company apart from the inside out.

Finally, the call connected, and Roman's voice crackled urgently. "Caspian, Celeste, we got a serious problem here. There's an insider leaking for Hayes. They are anticipating our moves, compromising our plans.'"

Caspian's voice, steady and authoritative, carried a note of concern. "Who do you suspect, Roman? The mole, the mole, we have to shut him down now.

"No," Roman replied tersely, the frustration evident in his voice. "It's not clear yet. The leaks are embedded, subtle, and indetectable. We're talking about a guy who knows our plays, maybe better than us."

Celeste's voice was calm yet forceful. "We have not let this derail our progress. We have to secure all communications and shape the security here. Whoever this individual is, they're a formidable opponent."

If all went according to their planning, the knowledge their foes were vicious and clever sank in. The corporate warfare was intensifying, and the stakes were about to rise even higher. As they began discussing their next steps, an email alert popped up on Caspian's laptop, the subject line ominous: "You won't survive the next move."

Caspian's green eyes widened as he read the message, heart pounding both with fear and determination. "Roman, Celeste, we need to do this. "This threat is personal, and it's moving faster than we anticipated."

Roman nodded gravely. "We're on it. Be alert and be prepared for anything.'"

But the pressure, Celeste took a steadying breath, that was still not anxiety creeping in. "We can't be beaten. Hayes Enterprises wins, and so will we."

Hayes Enterprises was not going to be the same. At that moment, the fate of the company and their lives was in the balance, and the atmosphere in the room was so thick with tension — violence came in the form of conflict, betrayal and deceit to the end, and it was palpable.
