Chapter 191: The return & rise
The morning sun stretched lazily across the skyline of Florida, spilling golden light over glass towers and palm lined streets.
For Golden, the warmth of the sunlight felt unfamiliar after everything that had happened.
The past weeks had been chaotic, overwhelming, and emotionally draining. Northbridge and London had come and gone like a storm she had barely survived, leaving behind questions, scars, and a silence she still didn’t fully understand.
A massive medical innovation hub/research institute was launched in Florida. It was the next big thing and everyone wanted to be a part of it. Work in progress had gone on for years and now it finally kicked off.
Golden was recruited into the project. Xander was brought in as a lead consultant/pediatric specialist.
Alex, Fabulous and Linda were also brought in. For them, it didn’t cost much, they didn’t worry about relocating.
For Golden, it meant moving back. For her, Florida felt different. It felt like a reset. Or at least, the illusion of one. Of course it had to be one, Florida was home.
The new mansion she and Xander bought stood tall in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods, its modern architecture blending glass walls with warm stone finishes. The wide driveway curved elegantly toward the entrance, and the trimmed hedges framed the property.
Golden stood in the living room, her arms folded loosely across her chest as she took it all in.
“Still feels unreal,” she murmured. “I didn’t know I’ll settle back in Florida.”
Behind her, Xander stepped in, setting down a box carefully near the staircase. He looked around as well, his expression calm, composed, but quieter than it used to be.
“We needed to move back to this city,” he said simply. “The new opportunity…our careers…your support system is here too.”
Golden walked toward the large windows, watching the movement outside. The city was busy, forward-moving. Unlike her thoughts.
Her phone buzzed lightly in her hand, pulling her back. It was an email.
She frowned slightly as she opened it.
“Xander,” she called.
He looked up from where he was arranging things near the dining area. “Yeah?”
“You got something from St. Augustine?”
His brows furrowed slightly as he reached for his phone. A second later, his expression mirrored hers.
“Yeah. Emergency board meeting.”
Golden’s stomach tightened slightly. “Same.”
They both looked at each other.
“Did they say what it’s about?” she asked.
Xander shook his head. “No. Just said attendance is mandatory.”
Golden exhaled slowly. “That’s… not ominous at all.”
Xander gave a faint smile. “We’ll find out soon enough.”
She nodded.
Across town, Hannah adjusted her sunglasses as she stepped out of a taxi, her gaze lifting toward the quiet residential street ahead.
A slow smile curved her lips.
“So this is where you are,” she murmured softly.
She tilted her head slightly, her eyes scanning the area.
Her gaze lingered briefly on a familiar car parked a few houses away.
Her smile deepened.
“Let’s see how long this perfect little life lasts,” she whispered to herself before continuing down the street.
The conference room at St. Augustine’s Hospital was filled with quiet murmurs and shifting anticipation.
Doctors, consultants, executives, and department heads sat around the long table, their expressions ranging from curious to slightly tense.
Alex, Fabulous and Linda were in attendance too.
They didn’t sit close to each other. They were mixed in between strangers. Everyone kept a strict face.
Golden sat beside Xander, her fingers lightly tapping against the table as she glanced around the room.
Something was definitely happening.
And no one seemed to know what it was.
“This better not be another restructuring meeting,” one of the senior doctors muttered under his breath.
Another sighed. “Whatever it is, dragging all of us here without context is unnecessary.”
Golden exchanged a brief look with Xander.
He gave a slight shrug. Minutes passed. Then the door opened.
Aj walked in first. Dressed sharply in a suit, his posture confident, his expression composed.
Golden’s brows pulled together slightly. Something about him felt familiar. Before she could place it, he stepped aside.
Allan Renshaw walked in.
For a moment, no one breathed.
Golden’s heart stopped.
Xander’s expression hardened instantly.
Allan moved with quiet authority, his presence commanding the room without effort. Gone was the worn, guarded man from London. Gone was the exhaustion, the heaviness.
This version of Allan was different.
He wore a dark suit that fit him perfectly, his posture straight, his gaze steady as it swept across the room.
He looked untouchable. Golden felt her chest tighten. This wasn’t possible. It didn’t make sense.
Just weeks ago, he had been…
Her thoughts cut off abruptly.
A low murmur spread through the room, confusion rippling among the attendees.
“Is that—”
“No way—”
“That can’t be—”
Aj stepped forward slightly, his voice calm but firm.
“Good morning, everyone.”
The room quieted again.
“I’d like to introduce you to the new majority stakeholder and executive director overseeing this institution’s expansion.”
Golden’s fingers curled slightly against the table.
“Allan Renshaw.”
Golden’s breath caught in her throat as her eyes locked onto Allan. He met her gaze briefly.
“As of today,” Allan began, his voice steady, calm, and entirely unfamiliar in its authority, “this hospital, along with several affiliated institutions, will be undergoing strategic restructuring and expansion under my company.”
No one spoke or moved.
Xander leaned back slightly in his chair, his jaw tightening as he studied Allan carefully.
Golden couldn’t look away.
Her mind refused to catch up with what she was seeing.
“How?” someone finally whispered under their breath.
It was the question everyone was thinking. But no one dared to ask out loud.
Allan continued as if nothing was unusual, outlining plans, vision, direction.
But Golden heard none of it. Her pulse roared in her ears. Her thoughts spiraled.
“Ms. Golden?” Allan looked at her. “Drop by my office after this meeting.”
Xander swallowed hard. “It’s Mrs…”
Allan interrupted. “I wasn’t talking to you.”
