Chapter 83 - Hour 83
"Hurry," said Cara, pulling up Liana to her feet. "We must leave before Ryan comes."
"But the police have been called, right? I heard you saying that," said Liana.
"Yes, but if Ryan reaches here before the police then we will all be dead when the police arrive," said Zayd.
I nodded.
"Are you all right?" I asked Liana. Her baby bump told me that she was most probably in the last trimester of her pregnancy. Her feet were swollen tremendously, and her forehead was glistening with sweat.
She nodded with a faint smile on her pale face.
She did not look fine to me at all. We needed to take her to the hospital immediately. She looked like she would faint any minute.
Cara held Liana and supported her in walking. But before we had even reached the door of the room, we heard footsteps.
My stomach dropped at the figure that appeared at the door.
Ryan.
He was here before the police.
"I don't know who I want to kill first. You," he pointed at me, "for all the dirty tricks you pulled tonight, or you," he pointed at Liana, "for dragging my family into this mess in the first place."
"She's carrying your child." I swallowed as I saw him pull out a gun from his pocket.
"Do you think I care?" he asked. "Actually, wait, I do." He grinned at me.
I felt Zayd's hand on my shoulder.
"You know how costly infant organs are in the market?" he asked, "No, you don't. They are costlier than all adult organs combined."
All life drained me.
No.
He could not mean that–
"Only for the sake of those organs, I was allowing this child to be born but now–" He started to laugh.
I wanted to throw up.
"Y–Your own child? You were going to kill your o–own child? For m–money?" Cara had gone white.
Ryan simply continued to laugh. "Of course, yes. Why else would I keep her alive till now?"
"Y–You are sick!" I spat.
Tears ran down my cheeks. I could not hold them back anymore. He was not human. He was a monster.
"I–I–" Liana's faint voice fell into my ears.
My head snapped towards her, only to see her collapsing onto the floor. Cara could only make her fall gentle but was not able to hold her weight.
"Liana... " Her name rolled off my tongue helplessly. We had to take her to a hospital.
Where are the police?
I knew they were coming. I just had to stall Ryan until then.
