Chapter 107: Mission 2
“That wasn't what we discussed, Lance.”
“It's team leader Lance, to you Agent. And while you're at it, reign your anger in.”
I kept mute, glaring at him.
He exhaled heavily, shoulders sagging tiredly. “I've talked about this with the higher-ups but they've refused to lend me their ears.”
“Is there nothing else you can do?”
“Sadly, nothing. So long as the evidence is sitting there, there isn't much I can do.”
“But he doesn't deserve that—”
“You're the only one who thinks that, Voss.”
“Come on, Lance.”
“Like I said… I really wished I could help you but I can't.”
I scoffed, then turned around… heading for the door.
“Where are you going, Voss?”
“To right a wrong.”
“Don't do something stupid.”
I opened the door and slammed it behind me.
“How did it go?” Anthony asked, leaning on the wall beside the door.
“I need to get into the office of the bureau of information.”
“Why?”
I stared at him in silence.
He sighed. “No.” Then began walking away.
“Please Anthony.”
“I don't know what it is you're planning to do, but I know it's something bad. So… I'm not helping.”
“Come on… you don't even have to do anything, you just distract their secretary, I believe you said she likes you, right.”
His face scrunched up in disgust.
“The feeling's not mutual and why would you need me to distract her?
“So I can take a certain document.”
He froze.
Then turned back to stare at me.
“You what?”
“You heard me the first time.”
“And I'm hoping I didn't hear right.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Do you want to go to jail that bad?”
“I don't have a choice, Anthony—”
“But you do… you just got an honorary medal for doing what a lot of Agents couldn't and now you want to throw it all away. Have you lost your mind?”
“A man is going to die because of me… Anthony. Me.” I said, pointing at my chest.
“Then we'll take legal means to make sure he doesn't.”
“And you think that's going to work?”
He glared at me, eyes hard.
“They're going to put him on trial, two days from now, Anthony. Please help me.”
He closed his eyes, running his palm over his face. “I don't know…”
“Please…” I begged, giving him my best puppy dog eyes.
I could see his resolve flicker slowly.
He exhaled finally.
“What's the plan?”
I smiled brightly, then pulled him along.
“Hi, how may I help you both?” Melinda said.
“More like… help me.” Anthony replied, with a coy grin.
“Anthony…” Melinda blinked, gazing at him. “What are you…”
He moved closer. “I've been meaning to talk about something with you.”
She blinked fast. “What?”
“I've decided to… confess.”
Seriously?
I stared at him in disappointment.
“Can't this wait… I'm currently working.” Melinda screeched.
“It’s like asking my love for you to wait.”
“But…”
“I've been thinking about you for a while now.” he murmured, closing the distance.
“Really? She stuttered.
I took that as my cue to slip away.
But not before swiping the key from the drawer.
My feet thumped against the floor softly, but in my ear… it felt loud.
Fear racked over my body as my head whipped from side to side.
“It's alright, Mara.” I murmured, repeatedly.
Soon enough—
I came to a stop in front of a door…
I gripped the keys tightly, then inserted it into the keyhole.
A click sounded, then I turned the doorknob and stepped in.
The room looked pretty decent but I didn't wait around, I went for the file cabinet immediately.
After about thirty minutes of searching.
I slammed the drawer.
“Where the fuck is it?” I groaned.
Frustrated tears prickled at the back of my eyes, and I pressed my palm to my temple.
My phone ringing brought me out of the matter at hand to Lance's name on the screen.
“Hello,” I croaked.
“Files like that are highly confidential and wouldn't be held in some random place, unless it's a separate cabinet away from all the others… I'll still advise you to quit this madness of yours.”
With that, the line went off.
A slow smile crawled up on my face.
“Lance you fucking bastard.” I grinned.
I focused my attention on every hidden detail instead and …
A small compartment pushed back into the wall. I pushed the button and a door came into view.
I pushed it open and inside lay a few files.
I pulled them out, glancing at each name then finally…
Ronan.
I opened the document and began scanning it.
“Those bastards…” I murmured.
They'd filed more than what Ronan ever did in those documents.
My phone buzzed again and I checked the caller ID to see it was Anthony.
“Hello,” I said as soon as I picked the call.
“Aren't you done yet?” He asked, voice strangled.
“Almost…”
“Hurry up before Melinda decides to stick her tongue down my fucking throat.” He groaned, then the line went dead.
I quickly pulled out the documents, folded it and stuck it inside my shirt.
Then I walked out and headed to the reception desk.
“Psst…” I signaled Anthony.
He glanced at me, then sighed in relief.
I slipped out quietly, then waited…
A few minutes later, Anthony followed.
“You got it?” He asked.
I nodded, “I had help from Lance.”
“Team leader Lance?”
“Yes… did you get the footage?”
He smirked. “All scrambled up.”
“Thank you so much, Anthony.”
“So long as I don't lose my medal of honor and end up going to jail… then we're good.”
I smiled. “Don't worry, I'll come feed you in jail.”
“You'll be there with me.”
“Last I checked… Melinda probably didn't see me clearly, so…”
He scowled. “You used me.”
I laughed loudly as we got into our car. “Seriously?”
“It's not funny, Aggy.”
Aggy…
A soft smile curled up on my face.
“My name's Mara, remember. We're not undercover anymore.”
“I like Aggy better.” He grinned.
I shook my head, as my mind went back to everything.
“Let's get something to eat… what would you like?” Anthony asked.
“Hmm… beef stew and bread.”
“Alright then…”
With that he sped down the road, as we both laughed while singing to some 90s
music.
