Chapter 146: Chapter Q146
Maria met us at the medical wing entrance, her tablet clutched tight, her face pale under the fluorescent lights.
"The name," I said, still exhausted from the fight, Hunter's arm wrapped steady around me. "Tell me."
"Yvaine," Maria said.
I stared at her, certain I'd misheard. "The pack historian? She's the one who told the council about my birth. She helped us."
"She controlled what the council heard," Maria said grimly, turning her tablet toward us. "Look at this. Financial records buried inside Kessler's own files, going back over fifteen years. Yvaine's been feeding him information the entire time. Which records got sealed. Which got revealed. She decided what the council knew and when they knew it."
"Why," Asher asked. "What does she gain?"
"I don't know yet," Maria admitted. "But whatever it is, it's been building for over a decade, hidden behind the one role in this entire pack that nobody questions. The keeper of the records."
A commotion erupted from further down the hall before anyone could respond further, shouting, something crashing hard against a wall.
"Kessler," Hunter said, already moving.
We ran toward the sound, guards scrambling ahead of us, and burst into the secure medical wing where Kessler lay restrained and unconscious from the fight hours earlier.
Yvaine stood over his bed.
She turned toward us slowly, calm despite the chaos, two guards already crumpled on the floor near her feet, unconscious or worse.
"You shouldn't have come," she said quietly. "Though I suppose I expected it eventually."
"You've been working with him this whole time," I said, fury cutting through my exhaustion fast. "Feeding him information. Guiding what the council knew."
"Guiding," she repeated, something cold crossing her expression. "That's a generous word for it. I've been correcting decades of the council's ignorance, Taylor. They buried the truth about the covenant so thoroughly that even I had to piece it back together from fragments they thought were lost."
"Why help Kessler," Asher demanded. "If he's not even the real threat here."
"Kessler was useful," she said simply. "Ambitious, angry, exactly the kind of tool a patient person can direct toward the right goals without ever needing to reveal themselves." Her eyes moved to me, something calculating behind them now. "He believed he was working toward reclaiming his own power. In truth, he was simply clearing every obstacle from my path while I remained safely invisible the entire time."
"Your path to what," I asked.
"The same thing everyone's wanted from you since before you were born," she said. "Except unlike Kessler, unlike Dorian, I actually understand the covenant properly. They both believed completion required your willing participation. They were wrong."
Something cold settled in my chest. "What do you mean?"
She moved fast, faster than I expected from someone who'd always seemed so quietly composed, lunging toward Kessler's unconscious body and pressing something sharp against his exposed arm.
"No!" I shouted, moving to stop her.
Too late. She withdrew a small vial, dark liquid inside it, and stepped back fast, her expression shifting into something I hadn't seen before, ancient and unsettling, her own eyes flashing gold in a way that made my blood run cold.
"You're a wolf," Hunter said, disbelief thick in his voice. "This whole time."
"Suppressed," she said. "Just like your silent bloodline, Taylor, except older. Buried so deep even I didn't fully understand what I was until I started studying the covenant records myself. I share the same original bloodline as Doran. A branch nobody remembered existed."
I felt Doran surge hard beneath my ribs, some ancient recognition sparking at her words.
"That's Kessler's blood," Asher said, staring at the vial. "Why would you need that?"
"Because completing the covenant the way Kessler and Dorian both wanted required Taylor's active cooperation," Yvaine said. "A version I've spent years discovering doesn't. A corrupted completion, forced instead of freely given, requires only blood from someone connected to the bloodline and the right conditions at the right location." She smiled thinly. "Kessler's blood works perfectly. Royal bloodline, connected enough to the original covenant to serve the purpose."
"You're going to hurt everyone," I said, understanding arriving fast and horrible. "A corrupted completion. That's not power, that's destruction."
"Everything worth having requires sacrifice," she said calmly. "Your silent bloodline included. If this destabilizes their suppression too violently, that's simply the cost of finally ending centuries of hiding."
"Don't you dare," I said, fury boiling hot and immediate.
She backed toward the window fast, guards finally recovering enough to move, weapons raised.
"You won't catch me before I reach the old site," she said. "The true origin point, not the grove Dorian and Kessler both used. I've known its location for years, waiting for exactly this moment."
"What moment," Hunter demanded.
"The moment Taylor's power grew strong enough that stealing even a fraction of it, forced or not, would finally be enough," Yvaine said.
She shattered the window behind her and dropped through it before anyone could stop her, vial clutched tight, disappearing into the dark grounds beyond the palace with a speed that confirmed exactly how long she'd been hiding an entirely different kind of strength.
Guards scrambled after her immediately, but I already knew, watching the chaos unfold, that someone who'd spent fifteen years hiding in plain sight wouldn't be caught easily now that she'd finally revealed herself.
"The old site," Maria said, already pulling up records on her tablet, hands shaking with urgency. "If it's real, if she's actually known its location this whole time, we need to find it before she does whatever she's planning."
"How do we find something even the pack's own historian kept hidden," Asher asked.
I thought of Willow, of the silent bloodline, of every quiet resource we hadn't fully used yet.
"We don't search alone," I said, already reaching for my phone. "We use everyone she never thought to account for."
Hunter met my eyes, understanding immediately. "The bloodline."
"All of it," I said. "Every single person who's ever been suppressed the way Yvaine was, the way I was, calling in every favor, every hidden eye across this entire territory. If she thinks she can disappear into the dark and finish this unnoticed, she's about to learn exactly how many people are watching now."
