Chapter 20

As the days went on Symphony showed improvement, it was still slow, but she was getting better day by day. She had finally been allowed to get up and move and wasn’t confined to her bed anymore so that was a big plus for her. Alexander barely left her side except at night when he tried to get information out of Fiona, who still wasn’t talking.

Damion tried to find out what he could using his network of informants, but was not finding out much on his end either. He had gone home once Symphony was on the mend and promised to keep his ears open for any new information that came his way. Alexander owed him a great deal for helping like he had, and Damion told him that in time all debts would be paid.

Gavin had taken shifts with Alexander on keeping an eye over Symphony and guarding Fiona. He was rather impressed at Fiona's unwillingness to talk after the torture that Alexander had put her through. If it had been anyone else, they would have broken down and spilled everything by now.

Symphony was gradually feeling like her old self again. She was able to get a shower without any help which was a blessing in itself. If she looked as bad as she felt the first few days, she was surprised she didn’t scare anyone off. She had yet to talk with Starlett, but she could feel her, which was better than the alternative. She had had no more visits from the moon goddess and right now that was ok with her. Not that she didn’t like the moon goddess, she just didn’t need any more astral trips right now.

As Symphony made her way down to the kitchen she was surprised when she felt Alexander's arm around her waist. She should have known he wouldn’t have been too far from her, considering since she had been back, he barely left her side.

“I am just going down to get something to eat. I am allowed to do that per doc’s orders, you know,” Symphony told him sarcastically as she rolled her eyes at him.

“Yes, I know but what the doc said, and I am just making sure you are steady. Nothing wrong with that is there?” he asked.

She hadn’t forgiven him for killing her parents and kidnapping her by any means but him saving her from the hell she endured at the hands of Fiona gave him some brownie points.

“You know your birthday is coming up in a few weeks,” Alexander said.

“And if history has told us anything having a party is the last thing we should be worrying about, or did you forget this whole fiasco started on my birthday last year?” She shook her head at him.

“I was thinking just a small get-together. You, me, Gavin, and Damion.”

Her head perked up at the mention of Damion, she heard he was the one who cloaked her scent but had yet to meet him to thank him.

“And if I refuse?” she asked smirking.

“It would break Damion’s heart. He has been literally dying to meet you.”

“Well then I guess we could do something small just cake and ice cream nothing fancy.”

They both chuckled as they reached the bottom of the stairs.

Alexander let go of Symphony and suddenly she felt lost, she couldn’t describe it other than that. She brushed it off and headed to the kitchen to find something to eat, she was starving. She settled on a few eggs, toast, and a few strawberries along with her cup of coffee. As she sat at the table to eat, she almost jumped out of her skin. Gavin was sitting there just watching her.

“Gavin, you scared me!” she screamed.

“I’m sorry I thought you heard me come in.”

“Obviously not if I jumped.”

“Woah, no need for the attitude, little one.”

Symphony rolled her eyes at him as Alexander walked in and sat down, stealing one of her strawberries. She gave him an evil look and rolled her eyes.

“What’s with all the yelling in here this morning?” Alexander questioned.

“Your so-called bodyguard scared the crap out of me,” Symphony replied.

Gavin went to say something but was silenced by a look from Alexander. Symphony looked at him and stuck her tongue out at him causing him to shake his head in defeat. There was no winning an argument if these two were involved. He slumped back in his chair causing both Symphony and Alexander to laugh.

“If you don’t be nice, Gavin, I won’t let you come to my birthday party,” Symphony told him with a smile.

“Haven’t you learned your lesson on birthday parties considering what happened last year?” Gavin asked her smirking.

“It's just going to be us and Damion this time. No surprises.”

Gavin rolled his eyes as Symphony laughed at him.

“I’m serious any more shenanigans like last year and you’re not allowed to have any more birthdays,” Gavin told her smiling.

Symphony finished her breakfast and told the guys that she was going to go back up to her room and rest. Gavin nodded and Alexander helped her up to her room. She wanted to say something to him before she went into her room but decided to keep her mouth shut, what she had to say could wait. She was exhausted. She said her goodbyes and shut her door.

Instead of lying down like she had originally planned, she decided to take a bubble bath to help her relax. She got the water as hot as she could stand it and climbed in. As she was getting lost in her thoughts her mind went back to when things were simpler, before she found out what Alexander had done, before the threatening messages, before she was taken by Fiona, back to when she thought she was just a normal wolf. She missed that.

“Hello little wolf.”

Symphony jumped; she hadn’t heard anyone come into her room.

“Relax girl, it’s just me” Starlett finally said laughing.

“You’re awfully jumpy.”

“Not funny, Starlett. After what I have been through, I am allowed to be jumpy” Symphony said as she rolled her eyes “I’ve missed you. I thought I lost you forever.”

“Not a chance girl, you’re stuck with me. I just needed time to recoup from everything. It took a lot to heal you and make sure you didn’t die.”

“Well, I thank you for that. It would have been nice to have someone to talk to though while I was in that cell.”

“I did what I had to do to keep you safe,” Starlett told her.

“I am just glad you’re back. I don’t have to feel so alone anymore.”

“You were never alone. From what I’ve gathered you got to meet the one and only moon goddess while I was away.”

“Yeah, I did but she left me with more questions than answers. The only thing that she did tell me was that you were taking the brunt of my pain and trying to heal me the best that you could.”

“She is like that. She always leaves us with more unanswered questions than answered ones” Starlett chuckled.

While they continued their conversation there was a series of unanswered questions down in the dungeons that needed to be answered.

Alexander was growing impatient with Fiona’s unwillingness to talk. He had tried everything that he could think of to make her talk and still, she kept silent. He knew she had nothing left to lose. All she kept saying was that she wanted the kingdom that was rightfully hers. She never gave up why she thought that she should’ve been the rightful heir, she never gave up who the person was who came to see her in the foster homes. She was stubborn.

Damion had investigated her background more closely and was able to get some information from that. He said that according to her records, she was left on the doorstep of her first foster home with a note attached to her blanket stating that she would become queen, but she needed to be hidden, it wasn’t signed so that was a dead end. He was drawing the same conclusion Alexander had, she was the daughter of the king and queen but was kept secret because she was a girl and then given away so that the king could have Alexander named heir as he was a male. They couldn’t prove it without finding out who all may have known about the queen’s pregnancy to begin with.

Up in her room, Symphony had managed to drag her protesting body out of the warm water and get herself dressed. She had a nice long talk with Starlett about everything and it made her feel better knowing that she hadn’t lost her wolf completely. She grabbed her favorite blanket and snuggled up with it as she drifted off to sleep. She hoped that she would have a dreamless night as she was tired of the nightmares she had been having, granted the had become less frequent but she hated reliving the pain and torture that she had been put through.
