Chapter 1708 Heart Stirring
Chapter 1708 Heart Stirring
"When you're better, let's go back to Redwood Isle." Rachel lowered her head. "Redwood Isle is still the best place—beautiful scenery, and good for your recovery."
He nodded.
Wherever she went, he would go.
As long as Rachel was there, it was the best place for Elmer.
Rachel felt a bit sleepy and dozed off in the early morning hours.
Elmer kept watching her.
He had slept too much these past few days, but now he was wide awake.
He knew what he had been through—major surgery.
A kidney transplant.
But he also knew that even with the new kidney, he wouldn't live much longer.
The transplant couldn't cure his condition.
Before, Elmer had been alone, lonely for so long, in pain for so long.
Every day he had waited for death to come.
He had made peace with death.
He didn't even find death scary—rather, it seemed like a release.
He only felt guilty toward Isaac for raising him.
Then this girl named Rachel burst into his life.
She added so many bright colors to his black-and-white existence.
It was as if he saw a different world.
He began to pray.
He began to fear.
Praying to live just one more day.
Fearing the day when it would all end.
Rachel, if only I could meet you again in the next life.
I would trade all my reincarnations for a healthy body in the next life.
He gazed tenderly at the sleeping woman.
That night, Elmer didn't sleep.
Morning light fell into the hospital room.
Rachel opened her eyes as the doctor came to check on Elmer.
Rachel followed the doctor out and asked about his condition.
Elmer had received the kidney transplant and was stable for now.
There were no serious signs of rejection either.
This made Rachel breathe a sigh of relief. As she was about to return to the room, she saw Isaac sitting on a bench in the hallway. The middle-aged man's hair had turned white overnight, and he looked worn and haggard. Seeing Rachel, Isaac waved. "Rachel, come here."
"Dad, why didn't you go in to see him?"
Isaac said, "You must be tired. Go rest. I'll stay here with Elmer."
Rachel shook her head. "I'm not tired. I want to spend more time with him."
"Elmer is lucky to have a wife like you."
"Dad..." Rachel's lips moved.
She didn't know what to say.
How to tell this gray-haired middle-aged man.
She felt what she was about to do next was too cruel.
Rachel went out to buy lunch and brought some for Isaac too. Elmer still couldn't eat or drink yet—he was on IV nutrition to keep his body functioning.
When she returned to the hospital, Jamie's room was on the same floor as Elmer's.
Jamie's room was the second one across from the elevator, with two bodyguards standing outside.
The guards even blocked a nurse who wanted to go in to change Jamie's dressing.
The nurse muttered, "What could be more important than your health? These rich people. His body hasn't even recovered yet and he's already rushing to talk business in his room." Another nurse walked over, and they gossiped: "What business talk? Didn't you see? A very beautiful young woman just went in. She's probably Mr. Lawson's girlfriend."
"He looks so cold and distant. Women actually like that type?" the older nurse said, puzzled.
The younger nurse said, "Oh my god, rich and good-looking—just that face alone is enough to make any girl fall for him."
