Chapter 1706 Divorce Him

But he had just undergone a kidney transplant and needed to stay in the ICU for observation for a week.

Rachel asked when he would wake up.

Jagger said, "If everything goes well, within 48 hours."

With the surgery successfully completed, Ruben also felt relieved. He went to the ward to check on Jamie, who woke up quickly—just two hours after the operation.

Ruben stayed in the room and talked with him for a while.

Ruben looked at him with a sigh. Even though they weren't blood-related.

This boy was very much like himself.

Both were dear to him, and he didn't want to favor either one too much.

"Jamie, Grandpa's going to leave now. You rest well."

Jamie had lost a kidney.

After Ruben left, he leaned against the headboard to rest.

Jamie closed his eyes.

He heard a knock on the door.

As if by telepathy.

He said, "Come in."

Rachel walked in.

Looking at the weak man lying in bed, she suddenly felt something strange in her heart. She walked to a spot about three feet from the bed. "Are you okay?"

Hearing her voice, Jamie opened his eyes. "Are you concerned about me?"

His voice was hoarse.

His throat hurt.

He wanted water, but the doctor said no fluids after surgery.

Rachel rarely saw him looking weak.

Especially someone as strong as Jamie.

But at this moment, he appeared before her as fragile as glass, and in her heart, she felt an indescribable emotion. "You saved Elmer. Whether it was because of threats or whatever reason, you were willing to save him, so of course I'm grateful."

After all, Jamie could have chosen to refuse.

If he had refused, she wouldn't have been able to force him.

After all, what he lost was a kidney.

He said, "Rachel, divorce him."

Rachel clenched her fists. The bit of goodwill she had just felt toward Jamie instantly vanished.

She knew this was what she had promised Jamie.

This was the condition.

"Wait until he wakes up, please, let me wait until he wakes up."

He couldn't refuse her plea, couldn't refuse her soft, tearful voice begging him. The man bit down hard on his teeth. "I said, divorce him right now."

"He hasn't woken up yet. The doctor said he'll wake up within 48 hours." Rachel's eyes were red. This past week she had barely rested, sleeping only three or four hours each day. "Jamie, please, I'm begging you. Once he wakes up..."

"Once he wakes up, you'll say his condition is unstable and ask to wait two more days, won't you?" Jamie closed his eyes. He didn't dare look at her crying. He was afraid he would soften again.

Soften and agree to all her demands.

Rachel said, "No, once he wakes up, I'll leave."

Rachel walked out the door. Before she could close it, she heard Jamie coughing inside.

Jamie's coughing grew louder, as if he was suppressing pain.

Rachel's fingers gripped the door tightly.

She looked back and saw Jamie in his blue hospital gown, weakly holding onto the bedside table, bent over coughing heavily, his other hand covering the wound at his waist. His head was lowered, black hair covering his eyes and brows, exposing his neck. His skin was pale and cold like unglazed porcelain, with veins clearly visible.

Rachel took a step forward, then stopped. She didn't turn around. Listening to the painful, barely suppressed coughing behind her, she closed the door.

Elmer woke up the next afternoon.
