Chapter 11: Unexpected Betrayal

The days following the encounter with Dario felt like running between shadows. Every corner of the villa, every sound outside the window, and every person crossing the hallway felt like an invisible threat. Sofia feels trapped in an increasingly narrow maze, with Dario as her only guide but also as a figure who increasingly blurs the line between trust and uncertainty.

On the one hand, Dario always explains each step firmly, making her feel she is in control. But on the other hand, Sofia feels like the world around her is spinning out of control. Looking at herself in the mirror, she hardly recognizes who she is now. The once independent woman who could rely on herself is now trapped in a dark and dangerous world.

That morning, Dario came earlier than Sofia expected. His usually calm face seems more serious, even a little agitated. “We'll start soon,” he said briefly.

Sofia sat in the dining room, trying to calm herself down while gazing at the view from the window. Her eyes couldn’t escape the large villa across the street. It was the home of one of Ricardo’s allies, a place Dario thought would be the starting point for their mission.

“Are you ready?” asked Dario, approaching her unreadably.

Sofia nodded slowly, although her heart was beating violently. “Just like we talked about. But Dario, what if this is more dangerous than we thought?”

Dario just smiled a little, but the smile was not enough to ease the fear that gripped Sofia’s heart. “Every step we take is risky, Sofia. But this is the only way to solve this problem. Trust me.”

Sofia stares at him for a moment, analyzing the expression on Dario’s face, which is more severe than usual this time. There is something more profound, darker, hidden behind his words. Maybe it was just his fear, but she felt more anxious than ever for some reason.

Later that night, Dario and Sofia headed to the house he was referring to. The two only bring a few people and a few trusted bodyguards. Dario stares at her with a piercing gaze as they drive to the location as if every detail of this trip is part of an essential plan.

“Don't hesitate to do whatever is necessary, Sofia,” Dario said in a low voice as the car drove away. “Whatever happens, don't show fear. He'll know if you hesitate.”

Sofia nodded, though her heart was in turmoil. They arrived at the house, which looked like a fortress surrounded by high fences and surveillance cameras. Dario instructed them to wait outside while he and others went inside.

However, a few minutes after they entered, Sofia sensed something strange. It was quiet, too quiet for a house filled with dangerous allies. No sounds were coming from inside. That should have been a sign.

Suddenly, a loud noise came from inside the house, followed by the echoing sound of gunfire. Sofia was startled, her heart skipping a beat. “Dario!” she shouted, but there was no answer.

Sofia’s hands shook as she ran towards the main door, but when she arrived, it opened, and Marco came out with a shocked face. “There's treason here,” he said, his face pale. “Dario's been arrested.”

Sofia felt the world collapse around her. “What do you mean arrested?”

“This wasn't our plan, Sofia,” Marco replied, his hands gripping Sofia’s shoulders firmly. “There was someone from inside who betrayed him. They've organized everything.”

Sofia felt as if the earth had rolled away beneath her feet. Dario, the man she had trusted, was not just part of this elaborate plan. He was part of the trap.

“We have to go,” Marco urged. “You're not safe here.”

“Why didn't you tell me before?!” Sofia stared at Marco angrily, but a more profound fear rose in her heart. “Who betrayed us?”

Marco remained silent, his eyes probing, and finally, in a heavy voice, he said, “Someone closer than you think.”

Sofia couldn’t say anything else. It was all too much to process. Dario, who had been her protector and guide, was part of a bigger game.

That night, Sofia sat silently in the car's back seat, fleeing the city that seemed to leave indelible traces in her mind. The cold night air touched her skin, but her body felt even more freezing-frozen from the confusion that coursed through her veins. The lights of the distant city were faintly visible, but the shadows of familiar faces were vivid in her mind, like a nightmare that she could not escape.

She felt like she had been betrayed, not only by those close to her but also by her heart. How could he have been so blind? How could she be so careless in the face of a reality she never expected? Every step he took seemed to take him deeper into the abyss of regret, regretting every decision that brought him to this point. It’s like there’s something she’s missed, something she once thought was small, but now it’s a deep wound.

The car continues to drive, but Sofia feels the world outside is becoming increasingly distant. Everything she once thought was sure has now turned into a faint shadow. The man’s face—the one she trusted—migrated into her mind like a dark shadow dancing in every corner of her memory. Every word that came out of his mouth used to taste sweet, but now it was like poison that slowly ate away at the trust she had once given.

After a long journey full of tension, Sofia finally arrives at a safe place. But even though that place should have given her a sense of security, she all felt emptiness.

Dario, the man controlling her heart, is just a part of a greater force that has planned everything. However, Sofia also knows one thing- this game is not over.

Behind this betrayal, answers remain to be reminded, and Sofia vows to uncover the truth, even if it means facing it alone.
