Chapter 426 It Was Determined to Be Her
"As long as you do your job right, you'll definitely get your reward!" Ruby said coldly, glancing at him. She noticed him fiddling with a pen and remembered the recent events. "By the way, Virgil's gone missing. Do you know anything about it?"
Liam looked up, surprised. "I have no clue! He's missing? How could he just disappear? Wasn't he supposed to be hidden away by your dad?"
"He was just told to stay put and not go out, but now he's gone. My dad thinks I had something to do with it." She frowned. If it wasn't Liam, then what happened to Virgil?
"Suspects you? Why would you kidnap Virgil? He's a key target for the cops now and has no value to us!"
"But now that something's happened, I'm the first one they suspect." Ruby grabbed a pen and signed a document. "Send someone to look for him. If you find him, let me know right away."
"Why bother? The cops will find him anyway," Liam said dismissively.
"Just do it!" Ruby snapped, clearly annoyed. "Now get out, I have a lot of work to do!"
Shrugging, Liam left her office, a playful smile on his lips.
At the police station.
Evelyn stared at a stack of photos without saying a word. After a while, she looked up. "Is this all?"
"Are you in cahoots with Virgil, the manager of the Redwood Group, trying to bring down the company?" the officer asked routinely.
Evelyn replied calmly, "What good would bringing down the Redwood Group do for me?"
"Because of business competition, and you have personal issues with the Redwood Group's project manager." The officer glanced at the provided information, which seemed to suggest this.
"No," Evelyn answered firmly. "We used to be in a relationship, but that's long over. Now we're just strangers."
"Then what's your connection with Virgil?" The officer pointed at the photos. "You're a perfumer, and Virgil is in charge of the Redwood Group's fragrance project. Now the Redwood Group is accusing you of adding banned substances to the perfume. What do you have to say?"
"I have nothing to say. I didn't do it."
"Your previous perfumes were also questioned for banned substances. Are you sure this has nothing to do with you?"
"The previous issue was explained to the public long ago. As for the Redwood Group, I have no dealings with them. To my knowledge, they have their own perfumer. Why not ask them?"
Evelyn lowered her gaze to the photos on the table. "Also, officer, these photos prove nothing. I don't know Virgil, let alone have any dealings with him."
The photos showed them passing by each other or meeting from a distance. There wasn't a single photo of them sitting face-to-face, so how could she be colluding with him?
"Really?" The officer pulled out a bank statement. "If you don't know him, why did he transfer money to your account?"
"Money transfer?" Evelyn was taken aback. She had no idea about this.
The statement, pulled from the bank, clearly showed the time and amount—ten million dollars.
Virgil had transferred ten million dollars to her account.
"I don't know anything about this money," she said, pushing the statement away. It was clear someone was trying to frame her.
She had several bank cards, but not all were in use. This particular card hadn't been used in a long time, and she wasn't aware of the balance or had any notifications set up.
So even if someone transferred money, Evelyn wouldn't know.
"You don't know about such a large sum?" The officer pointed at the statement, clearly thinking she was lying.
"This amount might be significant, but I don't really care," Evelyn scoffed. "I've been a perfumer for years. While I haven't earned that much, I've made quite a bit. With my skills, earning that amount isn't difficult."
"It's not difficult at all. Just tweak the formula a bit, and you can easily get it. Who wouldn't be tempted?"
The evidence was indeed against her, but there were many doubts.
The officer was just doing his job, and the Redwood Group was putting pressure on them. The public was watching, and the matter needed a resolution.
"Officer, the current evidence doesn't prove any connection between me and Virgil. First, I don't know him and haven't met him privately. Second, if you insist there's collusion, where's the proof? The transaction records? If someone wanted to frame me, knowing my account and transferring money isn't hard. Third..."
"Catch the thief with the loot. Talking is pointless. Why not bring Virgil here, and I'll confront him," Evelyn said confidently.
This was likely a setup, but it definitely wasn't Virgil himself.
He was caught in this too. Once the matter was resolved, it would be bad for him as well. No one would be foolish enough to frame someone and drag themselves down.
The only explanation was that both she and Virgil were part of this trap.
The officer was about to speak when someone rushed in and whispered something. He looked at Evelyn, who was puzzled.
"Virgil is missing," he said.
Evelyn was speechless.
"Is this related to you?" The officer's tone became much harsher, clearly treating her as a suspect.
Evelyn looked innocent. "I just found out! Officer, I've been busy in my studio with perfume work and haven't gone out much. You've brought me here, so how could I have the time or ability to make Virgil disappear?"
"Maybe you hired someone?"
This conversation was going nowhere. They were convinced it was her, right?
Someone else came in and said something. The officer glanced at Evelyn, stood up, and pointed at the table. "Think carefully if there's anything else you need to confess!"
Evelyn turned her head away as the officer left.
What could she confess? She didn't do it. She hadn't even paid attention to the Redwood Group's project, which had nothing to do with her.
She didn't know Virgil. Even if Liam was in charge of the project, so what? It had nothing to do with her.
She just wanted to do her job and focus on what she was interested in. What others did was irrelevant to her.
"Evelyn, someone has come to bail you out!" Another officer entered and informed her.
