Chapter 27: The Alpha’s Stsnd
Chapter 27: The Alpha’s Stand
Her POV
I had enough. Enough of the threats, enough of the games, enough of her trying to hurt her. My jaw tightened as I faced her, the air thick with tension, the walls of the room echoing the silent weight between us.
“Stop it, Calyra,” I said, my voice low, firm, unyielding. My eyes burned, locking on hers, letting her feel the strength behind my words. “Stop threatening Maltida. Now.”
She tilted her head, her sharp eyes glinting like knives. “But you love me,” she said softly, almost a whisper, though every word carried venom. “You like me. She’s just a substitute, a pawn in your hands. She’s nothing compared to me.”
I felt my chest tighten. The anger that had been simmering beneath my skin surged, but I forced it down, holding my control. “No,” I said, each word deliberate, steady. “When you weren’t beside me, she was. She stood there when I needed someone. She protected herself, yes, but she also tried to survive—and I… I am going to choose her. Over and over. Don’t you dare forget that.”
Her lips curled into that cruel, teasing smile, the one I hated and feared in equal measure. “Ronan… everyone in this pack will turn their backs on you eventually. But I was with you. Remember how I fought for you? Remember how I risked everything so you could become the Alpha?” She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a soft, almost tender tone. “I did it all for you, Ronan. I gave everything, sacrificed everything. You owe me… everything.”
Her words were a knife to my heart, because they weren’t entirely false. She had fought for me. She had bled for me. She had stood at my side, unwavering. But this wasn’t about her anymore. This was about Maltida.
I inhaled deeply, trying to calm the fire that threatened to spill out of me. I could feel the weight of the pack outside, waiting, watching, but none of that mattered. “Calyra,” I said, my voice softening, pleading even, though every part of me demanded firmness. “I know what you’ve done for me. I remember. I will never forget. But you… you cannot hurt her. Do you understand? She is under my protection. No one—no one—will touch her, and that includes you.”
Her eyes flashed, her pride wounded, and yet she tried to hide it behind a mask of superiority. “And if I refuse? If I don’t stop? If I… test you?”
I stepped closer, closing the distance, letting my presence fill the space between us. I wasn’t shouting, not screaming, but my voice was absolute, unbreakable. “If you ever touch her, if you ever try to scare her again, Calyra… I will not just stop you. I will end you. Do you hear me? I am her Alpha. I am her protector. And I will not—cannot—let anyone, not even you, hurt her. Not now. Not ever.”
Her lips trembled, just slightly, and I knew she was reeling from the strength in my voice. She tried to speak, to counter me, but the words faltered under the weight of my determination.
“I… I am calm now, Calyra,” I said, softer this time, almost tenderly, trying to reach the girl I once knew behind the wolf of pride and fire. “I am pleading with you. Don’t push me. Don’t test me. I cannot allow her to suffer because of our past. Because of your anger. Because of anything.”
She tilted her head, silent for a long moment, studying me. Her chest rose and fell with quiet breaths, a mixture of defiance and realization washing over her. I could see it in her eyes—she understood that I meant every word. She realized, finally, that Maltida wasn’t a game. She wasn’t a toy. She was under my protection, and nothing—not her history, not her status, not her love for me—would change that.
I stepped back slightly, giving her the space to breathe, but keeping my eyes locked on hers. “I am done warning you, Calyra,” I said. “Maltida is safe because I said she is. She has my trust. She has my care. You will not harm her again, and you will not let anyone else try either.”
Her shoulders stiffened, and for a moment, I thought she might turn and storm out, but instead, she gave a small, almost imperceptible nod. It was enough for now. Enough that she knew the Alpha had chosen, and it wasn’t her.
I exhaled slowly, the tension in my body slightly easing, though my heart still raced. “Go back to your room,” I said quietly, my voice carrying no threat now, only finality. “Stay there until you can control yourself. Until you can remember what it means to respect me… and her.”
Calyra stared for a moment longer, her lips pressed together, then finally turned, walking back toward the door, her steps measured, her pride still burning but her defiance tempered.
I watched her leave, my chest heavy with the weight of what had just happened. I had stood my ground, I had protected her, and I had reminded myself why Maltida mattered more than any past, more than any past loyalty, more than anything else in my life.
I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath, feeling the ache of the confrontation and the fire of my own love for her. I had done it. I had drawn the line. And no one—not Calyra, not anyone—would ever cross it again.
