Chapter 60: 60

Aurora’s POV

My body kissed the grass half-heartedly. I wasn’t properly briefed on what this mission would entail and although I was a strong woman, I must confess that this was the least of my expectations for the mission.

“Let me call you back,” I spoke hastily into the phone when the approaching footsteps of Alpha Mason’s right-hand man drew closer and closer. He was closing in on us pretty fast. He seemed pretty determined to fish out the persons behind the ruffles he heard in the bush.

Some men tagged along with him. I could tell from my intensified heavy breaths that a full-blown panic attack was not far from my reach. I turned to face Alpha Killian who was taking cover some metres away from me. He didn’t seem perturbed one bit.

I was hoping for eye contact because I was at my wit’s end. I needed some type of assurance that our cover wouldn’t be blown up. “Oh, moon goddess, you have helped me through more life-threatening challenges in the past. I need your help again,” I mumbled a short prayer under my breath and at the same time struggled to calm myself.

With each fleeting second, the footstep drew closer and closer. The closer they drew towards us, the more I felt like my heart would pop out. One of the men was standing right over me. I ensured that the panic didn’t trigger a vibration from my body, or else we would be doomed to an ugly fate.

He stood over me for a few seconds, then he moved away. I thanked my stars immediately, thinking that was all, not until another one came along, then hope slipped off my hands for a while.

He followed in the footsteps of the other man who had just moved away, only that there was a slight deviation. He stood over men and after a while made to open the thicket I was taking cover in to make a passage for himself self and the others.

Just as he raised his heavy-booted foot to take the next contemplated step, he touched his ear and nodded to and information that had just wavered in. Instantly, his foot was stamped elsewhere aside from my head which was seemingly the foremost target.

He nodded a couple more times and uttered a few sentences. “Heard some ruffling noise around this area. Checking to see if the coast is clear,” one of the men spoke into a phone that had just beeped.

“Alright. We are moving!” he said and hiss a beckoning to the other men who were slightly far apart from where he stood. I couldn’t thank the moon goddess enough.

I didn’t know how long I had held my breath till I started panting for air. Taking in huge gulps of it, I allowed the weight of my body to relax heavily on the grass. “That was close,” I exclaimed in between gasps.

“Take this go after them, ensure you get to the van before it moves. If you are fast enough, you’ll meet us here, if not, you know what to do,” Alpha Killian said to one of the men beside him as he handed over something to him.

I could barely see what it was and I wasn’t keen on straining my eyes to see it but I trusted my instinct that it wasn’t a bomb, perhaps a tracker. The guard hurried off stealthily and slowly.

He was careful not to make a sound and dust up another round of attention from Alpha Mason’s men who stood nearby haggling over something that seemed important. The muscles on their faces contorted into a frown anyone would term dangerous, if not deadly in the bright light that shone over them from the pole.

I turned my gaze to Alpha Killian who, with two fingers, signalled a direction I should head. He turned to the guard and asked him to back up the other guard who had just left.

I watched as he reached into his pocket, fished out a burner phone and uttered some words into the phone. “Hurry up!” he spat quietly into the phone. “Take down anyone who stands in your way,” he added.

I didn’t know we were close to the venue of Alpha Mason’s secret party till some ladies came out looking all drunk and used up. Turned out that we were at the back of the building where shady things went down.

One of the girls resembled my nanny. I pitied her so much. The hand of her spaghetti gown was almost falling off her shoulders. I wondered at the kind of atrocities these rogue leaders perpetrate daily and shrugged my shoulders in a resigned sigh.

The girls throttled towards the van and ducked their heads slightly before entering. Once both girls were in, they jammed the door of the van closed.

“Where are you?” Alpha Killian whispered into the burner phone while the engine of the van was turned on. “Get over there this minute and get this done,” he ordered, his voice never failing to hide the annoyance brewed fiercely.

“Where are you?” he reached out to the other man whom he sent as a backup. “That’s a good one,” he complimented.

I was taken aback a little because I had never seen Alpha Killian dish out a compliment to his men before. I couldn’t wait for a better time to tease the leaving daylight out of him. I watched quietly as the van took off in a pool of black emissions.

“Our mission is done here,” he announced, “Up! Let’s get going,” he said stretching his hand towards me to help lift me. I ignored his offer of help and helped myself up, not without some gnashing of teeth though.

His face reddened almost immediately. I took pleasure in seeing that he is put in his place, so he knows the world doesn’t revolve around his Alpha ego.

I walked and hopped simultaneously as I made for the car. Just then, I remembered I needed to hear from Alpha Simon as regards the welfare of my kids. “What?” I screamed immediately as soon as I had an audience with him over the phone.
