Chapter 70: Resignd Herself to Death

After all the tests were done for Daphne, the results came back pretty fast. The doctor grabbed the lab report and put it in front of Carl.

"Mr. Ward, it looks like Mrs. Ward used some kind of toxic pesticide back then. It's not deadly, but it's really messed up her organs and immune system."

"Can it be fixed?"

Carl's face was stone-cold, and the doctors in the office could feel the tension. It was clear how much Carl cared about Daphne.

The doctor shook his head, looking nervous. "The damage is permanent, especially since it's been going on for so long. Mrs. Ward's been dealing with malnutrition and a weak immune system, which is why she gets sick so often."

The more Carl listened, the more serious he got. He couldn't wrap his head around how much Daphne had suffered, all the humiliation and torment she went through with the Johnson family.

No wonder, when he first met Daphne, she straight-up told him she wouldn't live past twenty-five and they could get divorced in a year without any drama.

Daphne had basically resigned herself to death. But every day, she was so kind and warm to him, always smiling so brightly.

Carl wanted to ask the doctor how much time she had left, but it felt too grim, so he changed his question.

"So, what's the plan for her treatment?"

The doctors exchanged looks, understanding each other without saying a word.

The same doctor spoke up again, "We've talked it over and decided to go with mild tonics for treatment. But we can't rely just on drugs. Combining them with nutritional supplements should help a lot."

Everyone nodded in agreement.

Carl said, "Make sure all the medicines are top-notch. If you can keep her healthy, the Ward Group will have your back."

Meanwhile, Daphne was sitting by the hospital bed, soaking up the warm sun. The thin cotton socks on her feet felt so comfy in the sunlight.

Just as she was enjoying the peaceful moment, her phone rang in her pocket.

It was Jade. It must be evening over there. Usually, Jade would text her, rarely calling directly. Something must be up.

"Daphne! I need your help!"

"Take it easy. What's going on?"

Jade sounded anxious, clearly something had happened.

"Didn't Ophelia give you the authority to manage her hotels? I need you to help me delete all the surveillance footage from the Empire Hotel tonight. I'll explain later."

"Okay, are you alright?"

From the sound of it, Jade seemed to be outside, with the wind howling in the background.

"I'm fine. I'll explain later. And I need to find a hotel to stay in first."

"Okay, I'll book a room at another hotel for you and send you the address. Stay safe."

Jade immediately sounded playful. "Daphne, you're the best. I'll hang up now."

After hanging up, Daphne booked a room at another hotel under the Wilson family and sent the info to Jade. She then quickly called the manager of Empire Hotel, explained the situation, and they agreed to comply.

About twenty minutes later, Jade sent a message: [Daphne, I'm safely in bed now. Love you!]

Daphne smiled and replied: [Glad you made it. Rest well; we'll talk later.]

The door opened, and Carl saw Daphne playing with the shadows cast by the sunlight with her toes.

"Are you feeling any discomfort?"

Daphne turned around to find him. "Didn't you say you were going to the office? Ralph mentioned there's an important business dinner tonight."

"It's not important. I didn't want to go."

Actually, he was worried about Daphne. Seeing her looking much better, he felt a bit relieved.

He asked, "Have you taken your medicine today?"

Daphne nodded. The light and happy expression she had just now turned a bit sad.

Daphne lowered her eyes slightly, her gaze falling on her feet again.

"Carl, thank you for everything you've done for me."

Carl didn't understand and raised his hand to knock on her head helplessly.

"The doctors saved your life, not me."

"That's exactly what I'm thanking you for." Daphne looked up and met Carl's eyes.

She continued, "Thank you for bringing in so many excellent doctors to treat me. In the past, whenever I felt unwell, I would endure it if I could. Otherwise, the Johnson family would just find any doctor to prescribe some vitamins, and that was it. No one has ever been this good to me, so I have to thank you."

These words made Carl's heart ache.

"So, you should behave and not risk your life, making me take care of you," Carl said somewhat arrogantly.

She liked Carl's little arrogance. After a pause, she continued, "It shouldn't trouble you for too long. I know my limits."

"What limits?"

Daphne didn't answer. Carl knew what she meant.

The atmosphere felt a bit off, and he couldn't help but pinch her face. "I won't let you go, and Death won't dare take you. Enjoy your life."

The night had fallen. Claire fixed Alan's tie and, suppressing her strong disgust, kissed him on the cheek.

Alan beamed with joy. Ever since Claire said she forgave him, he felt at ease. Anything was fine as long as they didn't divorce.

At the dinner party, Alan chatted with various bosses.

A waiter, seeing Alan enter, went back to the pantry, opened a pill in his pocket, and poured the powder into a champagne glass before filling it with wine.

Seeing Alan's drink almost empty, the waiter brought the drink over.

"Mr. Fisher, long time no see. Do you have any news on the Eastside project?" A boss greeted Alan, and Alan casually took the drink offered to him and clinked glasses with the boss.

The waiter quickly left, went to the lounge, and sent a text message: [Mission accomplished]

Soon, a stunning figure appeared at the back door of the dinner party. The assistant got out of the car, checked the surroundings, and then helped Vivienne out of the car.

Vivienne's outfit today was quite different.
