Chapter 46: More Deception

Chapter 46: More Deception

Detective James pulled up to the dimly lit restaurant, its neon sign flickering in the cool evening air, He parked his car across the street, scanning the surroundings with a trained eye, The place was nearly empty, save for a few late-night diners hunched over their meals, His instincts told him to be cautious, meetings like these rarely ends without consequences.

As he stepped inside, the smell of greasy food and cheap coffee filled his nostrils, The clinking of utensils and hushed conversations provided a false sense of normalcy. A waitress, tired and disinterested, glanced at him before turning away.

Then, at a secluded booth in the corner, he saw a hooded figure sitting with their back to the entrance, James adjusted his coat, hand resting on his holster as he approached.

" Detective James", the voice greeted, calm yet laced with tension.

James slid into the booth across from the informant, The hooded figure slowly lifted their head, revealing a young man with sharp features, a fresh bruise on his cheek, and eyes that carried the weight of secrets.

" Who are you?" James asked, keeping his voice low.

The young man smirked, " Name's Ryan, I used to run with Jake before we both got locked up after Jake's father's death,...I know what Dr Martin is hiding...but I need something in return ". Ryan said ...

James leaned in slightly, analyzing Ryan's demeanor," And what exactly do you want?" James asked

Ryan exhaled, fingers drumming against the table, " Protection and Jake's freedom, " I was released last week, but I ain't safe; people inside the prison are talking, and Dr Martin's? He is playing a bigger game than you think, Jake's life will be at risk if Jake confronts him about his father's death, and I'm very sure he will be trying to control the whole damn prison".

James narrowed his eyes, " Explain ".

Ryan shifted uncomfortably, glancing towards the window as if expecting someone to be watching, " Dr Martin has a way with people, he finds their weaknesses and twists them until they break, Jake thinks he is in control now, but the Doctor will turn him to his pawn - by feeding him with lies that feels just true just enough to keep him on the leash.'

Detective James nodded, considering Ryan's words, " And why do you care so much about it "?

Ryan let out a dry chuckle, " Because Jake ain't the only one being played, but there is something deeper going on, that involves people outside of that prison. If Dr Martin gets in charge and gets what he wants, he won't just walk free ...he will have that power he had always commends

Detective James sighed deeply, " This was more than just a revenge plot or psychological game, " Do you have proof? Give me something stronger, " Detective James said.

Ryan reached into his jacket pocket, and for a brief moment, Detective James' hand went to his gun. Instead of a weapon, Ryan pulled out a folded piece of paper and slid it across the table.

Detective James unfolded it and saw a list of names - some he recognized, prominent people in the society, even some old cases, and some unfamiliar people. Next to each name were short notes: properties, leverage points, weakness, and fear.

" This .....this is a hit list", Detective James stuttered.

Ryan nodded, "Dr Martin's been planning something for a long time, his targets are not just on the Rich people, but also he is building an empire."

Detective James felt a cold chill creep down his spine; he had underestimated Dr. Martin; the man wasn't just a manipulator - he was a strategist, playing a game far more dangerous than Detective James had imagined.

Before Detective James could respond, the restaurant door swung open, A tall figure in a black coat stepped inside, scanning the room. Ryan became tensed

" Shit,” he whispered, " We have been followed.”

James reached for his gun just as the man spotted them and started moving toward their booth.

" Time to go," Ryan muttered, already sliding out of his seat.

James clenched his jaw, The case had just taken a deadly turn. and now, there was no going back.

Just then, Detective James's grip tightened around his holstered gun as the man in the black coat strode towards them; his expression was cold and unreadable; Ryan was already moving, sliding out of the booth and heading towards the back exit.

Detective James stood slowly, keeping his movements casual, not wanting to tip off the stranger that he was aware of the threat, But as soon as he turned to follow Ryan, the man reached into his coat.

Detective James reached instantly.

" Stop! Police! " he shouted, drawing his gun and leveling it at the man's chest.

The restaurant fell silent. The waitress gasped, and a few late-night diners ducked behind their tables. The man froze but didn't raise his hands, instead, he smirked.

" You are making a mistake, Detective", he said, his voice barely above a whisper, almost amused.

Detective James wasn't interested in the. Conservation, " Hands where I can see them now".

The man hesitated for a second - then, without warning he bolted for the door.

" Shit!" Detective James hissed, chasing after him,

Ryan had already disappeared into the alley behind the restaurant, but Detective James couldn't worry about that now, he had to catch this guy before he escaped for real.

He burst into the street, spotting the man sprinting towards a black sedan parked car across the road. Detective James raised his gun but there were too many civilians around - he couldn't risk a shot.

The sedan's engine roared to life as the man yanked the door open. Detective James sprinted forward, but before he could reach the car, the tires screeched against the pavement, and the vehicle sped off.

Detective James cursed, watching the taillights vanish into the night. He took a deep breath, regaining his composure before pulling out his phone.

" Dispatch, I need an APB . on a black sedan car, last seen heading west on 7th Street, possible connection to Dr Martin's case".

As he put his phone in his pocket, that was when he realized that Ryan was gone, That damn kid had slipped away in the chaos.

But he had left behind something valuable - the list.

Detective James unfolded the rough paper again, studying the names carefully, his eyes landed on one in particular, and his heart almost stopped beating.

Captain Richard Deckhand.

His former mentor, The man who had taught him everything he knew.

James inhaled sharply; This wasn't just about revenge or manipulation; Dr Martin was targeting people with influence - people with power indeed.

And if Deckhand was on that list, it meant one thing,

Dr Martin wasn't just playing the game

, He was planning to win.

And Detective James had to move fast before it was too late.
