Chapter 97: The Descent
The entrance to the cave was hidden. Behind a waterfall. Cold water. Rushing. Loud. It fell from the mountain peak. Into a pool. Deep. Dark.
We stood on the edge. Four of us. Me. Clara. Elias. And Marcus.
Marcus walked with a limp. His ribs were broken. From the duel. From the wind. He held his side. Grimaced. Pain. But his eyes were hard. Cold. Not gray anymore. Brown. But empty. Like stone.
"Are you sure?" Clara asked. She shivered. Not from cold. From fear. Her arm was wrapped. White cloth. But black spots showed. The ink. The Residue. It pulsed. Slow.
"Yes," I said. My voice was rough. Static. The gray had spread. To my jaw. My cheeks. My skin crackled. Soft sparks. Blue. White. I wore gloves. Thick. Leather. To hide it. To protect them.
Elias nodded. He looked at the waterfall. "The Residue is strong here. The air tastes like metal. Like blood."
He was right. The smell was heavy. Ozone. Electric. Sharp. It burned my nose. My throat.
"We go in," I said. "We find the source. We stop it."
Marcus laughed. A dry sound. Like cracking bone. "Stop it? You cannot stop the tide, Selena. You can only drown."
"I am not drowning," I said. "I am fighting."
I stepped into the water. Cold. Shocking. It soaked my boots. My pants. I waded through. To the back. To the dark hole behind the falling water.
The others followed. Clara. Elias. Marcus. Last.
Inside, it was dark. Pitch black. No light. No sun. Just the sound of water. Echoing. Loud. Splash. Splash.
I lit a torch. Fire. Orange. Flickering. It cast long shadows. On the walls.
The walls were not rock.
They were glass.
Shards. Millions of them. Embedded in the stone. Sharp. Jagged. Reflecting the fire. Sparkling. Beautiful. Terrifying.
Remnants of the old reset. The baby’s power. Buried. But not gone.
"Do not touch them," Elias warned. His voice was low. Serious. "The glass remembers. It sings."
We walked deeper. The tunnel narrowed. Downward. Steep. Slippery. Wet.
The air got hotter. Humid. Sticky. The smell of ozone grew stronger. Like a storm. Inside a box.
Clara held her arm. She whimpered. "It hurts," she whispered. "The voices... they are louder here."
"What do they say?" I asked. I kept walking. Leading.
"They say... join," Clara said. Her eyes were wide. Scared. "They say... be whole. Be perfect. Be still."
Marcus walked beside her. He did not look at her. He looked at the walls. At the glass. His eyes flickered. Just for a second. Gray. Static.
"Perfect," Marcus muttered. "Yes. Perfect."
"Marcus?" I said. I stopped. Turned. "Are you okay?"
He blinked. The gray faded. Brown. Hard. "I am fine," he said. "Keep moving."
We went on. Deeper. Down.
The tunnel opened into a large chamber. A cavern. High ceiling. Lost in darkness.
The floor was covered in glass dust. Crunch. Under our boots. Loud. In the silence.
In the center... a pit. Deep. Black.
And from the pit... a hum. Low. Vibrating. In our bones. In our teeth.
Thump.
The heartbeat.
Thump.
Stronger.
"It is below," Elias said. He pointed. At the pit. "The anchor. And the Residue."
We moved toward the edge. Careful. The glass dust shifted. Slid.
As we walked, the walls began to sing.
Not a melody. A noise. High. Thin. Like wires. Like bees.
Zzzzzzt.
Clara covered her ears. "Make it stop!" she cried.
I tried to ignore it. But it drilled into my head. Into my mind.
Images flashed. Behind my eyes.
The white field. The void. The baby. Smiling. Black eyes.
Come home, the song whispered. Be glass. Be still.
I shook my head. "No," I muttered. "Focus."
Marcus stopped. He stared at the wall. At a large shard. Reflecting his face.
But the reflection was not him.
It was a statue. Glass. Perfect. Still. Smiling.
"Beautiful," Marcus whispered. He reached out. To touch the shard.
"Marcus, no!" Elias shouted.
Too late.
Marcus touched the glass.
A shockwave hit us. Invisible. Strong.
Marcus screamed. Not in pain. In joy.
His eyes turned black. Fully. No white. No brown. Just void. Just ink.
He turned to us. His face was blank. Empty. But his mouth smiled. Wide. Too wide.
"Join us," he said. His voice was not his. It was many voices. Layered. Static. Hollow.
"Marcus?" Clara stepped back. Scared.
"He is gone," Elias said. He pulled a knife. From his belt. Steel. Sharp. "The Residue has taken him."
Marcus lunged. Fast. Faster than before. Enhanced. By the void. By the glass.
He grabbed Clara. By the throat. Lifted her. Off the ground.
"Selena!" Clara gasped. Choking.
I reacted. Instinct.
I raised my hand. The gloved hand. But the static burst through. Blue. White. Violent.
A blast of wind. Hit Marcus. Hard.
He flew back. Hit the wall. Glass shattered. Loud. Crash.
He fell. But he stood up. Instantly. No pain. No injury. Just black eyes. And a smile.
"You cannot break us," Marcus said. The voices layered. "We are one. We are whole."
He charged. At me.
I dodged. Rolled. On the glass dust. It cut my clothes. My skin. But I did not feel it. Only the static. Only the power.
I stood up. Faced him.
"Marcus," I said. "Fight it."
"There is nothing to fight," he said. "Only peace."
He attacked again. Punch. Kick. Fast. Strong.
I blocked. With my arms. The static sparked. Blue lightning. Between us.
He did not flinch. He pushed harder.
I was weaker. Human. Tired. Gray.
He was strong. Void. Endless.
He grabbed my throat. Same as Clara. Lifted me.
My feet dangled. Air. No breath.
"Join us," he whispered. Into my face. His breath smelled like ash. Like ozone.
I looked into his black eyes. Saw nothing. No Marcus. No friend. No rival. Just the Residue.
And behind him... the pit. The heartbeat.
Thump.
Thump.
The Father was waking.
And I was dying.
