Chapter 96: The Memory Keeper

I did not use the dagger.

I could not.

To forget Damian... was to kill him. Again. And this time, it would be me who killed him. Not the void. Not the baby. Me.

I looked at the white glass blade. It sat on the dirt floor. Cold. Sharp. Waiting.

The gray static had reached my neck. It tingled. Numb. Cold. My heart beat slow. Thump... pause... thump.

If I waited... I would vanish. Become wind. Become noise.

But if I used the blade... I would live. Empty. Alone.

No.

There was a third way.

Not magic. Not forgetting.

Love.

Real love. Not the power. Not the bond. Just... care. Connection. Human touch.

I stood up. My legs shook. Weak. I wrapped my gray hands in cloth. Thick. Wool. To hide the sparks. To protect others.

I opened the door. The sun was setting. Red. Orange. Dark shadows stretched across the camp.

I walked. Toward Clara’s shelter.

She lay on a bed of straw. Her face was pale. Sweaty. Her arm was exposed. The black veins pulsed. Up to her shoulder. Like ink. Like oil. Like the Residue.

She scratched. Even in sleep. Her nails dug into her skin. Blood mixed with the black ink.

"Clara," I whispered.

She woke. Her eyes were wide. Scared. Flickering. Gray.

"Selena?" she gasped. "Don't... don't touch me. It hurts."

"I know," I said. I sat beside her. On the straw. "But I am not here to heal you with magic. I am here to be with you."

Clara frowned. Confused. "What do you mean?"

"I mean..." I took off the wool wraps. My hands were gray. Sparking. Blue. White. Ugly. Dangerous.

Clara flinched. Pulled back.

"No," I said. Softly. "Trust me."

I placed my gray hand on her forehead. Not to push energy. Not to pull sickness. Just to touch. To connect.

The static crackled. Loud. Zap.

Clara cried out. Pain. Sharp.

But I held on. I closed my eyes. I focused. Not on the void. Not on Damian. On Clara. On her fear. Her pain. Her life.

I am here, I thought. You are not alone.

I poured my warmth. My humanity. My memory of her laugh. Her kindness. Her friendship. Into the touch.

The static fought. It burned. My hand felt like fire. Like ice. But I did not pull away.

Slowly... the black veins on her arm stopped pulsing. They receded. Just a little. Down to her elbow.

Clara’s breathing slowed. Her eyes cleared. The gray flicker faded. Brown. Human.

"Selena," she whispered. Tears fell. "It... it stopped."

I pulled my hand back. It was darker now. Gray up to my chin. My neck. But I smiled.

"It works," I said. My voice was rough. Static-filled. "Love works. Not magic. Love."

Clara sat up. She looked at her arm. Then at me. Her eyes were full of wonder. And fear.

"But you..." she started. "You are turning."

"I am okay," I lied.

Clara grabbed my good hand. The one not yet gray. Her grip was tight. Desperate.

"Selena," she said. Her voice was low. Urgent. "The voices... they are not just noise."

I looked at her. "What do you mean?"

"They are words," Clara said. "Warnings."

"Warnings about what?"

"The Residue," Clara said. "It is not just in us. It is gathering. Moving."

"Where?" I asked. My heart skipped. Thump... pause.

"Under the mountain," Clara said. She pointed. Out the window. At the peak. The blue light pulsed. Faint.

"In the caves," she said. "Deep down. Where Damian is anchored."

I felt cold. Colder than the static.

"Why there?" I asked.

"Because that is where the anchor is," Clara said. "The Residue wants to break it. To free the Father. To return to the glass."

She looked at me. Her eyes were serious. Clear.

"He is waking up," Clara said.

"Damian?" I asked. Hope. Fragile.

Clara shook her head. Slow. Sad.

"Not Damian," she said. "The Other One."

The Baby. The Father.

He was not dead. He was dormant. Buried. Under the rock. Under Damian. And he was waking up.

The ground shook.

Not a wind. Not a storm.

A heartbeat.

Thump.

Deep. Under the earth. Under our feet.

Thump.

Stronger. Louder.

The hut shook. Dust fell from the roof.

Clara held my hand. Tight.

"He is coming," she whispered.

I stood up. The gray static covered my chest. My heart. I could feel it slowing. Thump... pause...

But I did not care.

The Father was waking.

And Damian was trapped. Holding him.

I had to go. To the caves. To stop the Residue. To save Damian.

Even if it killed me.

Even if I forgot him.

I looked at the dagger. On the floor. White glass.

I kicked it. Under the bed. Hidden.

I would not forget.

I would fight.

"Get Elias," I said to Clara. "And Marcus. If he can walk."

Clara nodded. She ran out. Into the dark.

I stood alone. In the shaking hut.

The heartbeat grew louder.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The mountain was alive.

And it was angry.

I walked out. Into the night.

Toward the cave.

Toward the end.

Or the beginning.

The wind blew. Hard. Cold.

It did not whisper my name.

It screamed.

Run.

But I did not run.

I walked.

With gray skin.

And a human heart.

To save the ghost.

From the monster.
