Chapter 52: The Unforgiving
Maya's POV
My hands are around Katherine's throat.
Squeezing.
The hunger roars inside me. Screaming to take. To feed. To drain every beautiful connection flowing through her until nothing's left.
But under the roar, something whispers.
Jake. Jake's voice. Saying my name. Over and over like a prayer.
I let go. Stumble back. My hands won't stop shaking. Katherine's blood under my nails. Red. Bright. When did I scratch her?
"Maya." Jake catches me before I hit the floor. "Stay with me. Look at me."
I look. His face swims in and out of focus. The hunger pulls at my eyes. Wants me to see connections instead of people. Threads instead of faces.
"Katherine." My voice sounds shredded. Raw. "Did I kill her?"
"She's breathing." Mom kneels beside Katherine. Her hands checking pulse. Checking wounds. Shaking the whole time.
I force myself to really look.
Katherine's skin is gray. The black veins cover her entire chest now. Wrapping tight around her heart. Squeezing with each beat. I can see it with my changed vision. See them killing her from the inside.
Minutes. She has minutes.
"Richardson refused to forgive her." Mrs. Rodriguez helps Katherine sit against the wall. "The cure didn't work."
"Of course it didn't." The words taste like metal. Like blood. "Why would he forgive the person who killed his son?"
"Because she apologized." Jake's voice cracks. "Because she meant it."
"Meaning it isn't enough." I press my palms against my eyes. Try to stop seeing the connections everywhere. Can't. "Forgiveness isn't something you earn by asking pretty. It's something people give when they're ready. If they're ever ready."
"Then Katherine dies." Mom's voice breaks into pieces. "You die. Every Guardian dies. Because some hurts don't heal."
I drop my hands. Look at Katherine barely breathing against the wall. At the veins crushing her heart.
At my own arms where I know the same veins are spreading. Slower. But there.
We're all dying. And the only cure requires our victims to save us.
"That's not right." Jake's hands ball up. "Guardians made mistakes but they tried to help. They don't deserve death."
"Right?" Katherine's laugh is wet. Choking. "I killed his son. Violated thousands. Played God with people's lives for thirty years. What do I deserve?"
"A chance." Jake won't let it go. "Everyone deserves mercy."
"No." I look at him. At his changed face. At what I almost became staring back from his eyes. "Everyone deserves choice. Which means accepting when they choose not to forgive."
The silence crushes down.
Katherine's breath rattles. Each one thinner than the last.
"So we do nothing?" Mom asks. "Watch her die? Watch you die?"
"We ask." The answer sits in my chest. Heavy. True. "We ask everyone Katherine hurt. Everyone I hurt. Every victim of every Guardian. And we accept their answers. All of them."
"Some will say no." Mrs. Rodriguez nods once. "Like Richardson. Some wounds are too deep."
"Then those Guardians die." I say it flat. Hard. Let the truth cut. "We don't get to force forgiveness. That's the whole point."
Jake stares. "You're saying some Guardians can't be saved."
"I'm saying some shouldn't be." My throat closes. I force the words out anyway. "If you hurt people so badly that no one will forgive you, maybe that's what you earned."
Katherine makes a sound. Half laugh. Half sob. "She's right. I don't deserve saving."
"Stop that." Mom grips Katherine's hand hard. "You made mistakes. You're not beyond hope."
"Hope isn't something we give ourselves." I kneel beside them. The floor cold through my jeans. "It's something our victims give us. If they choose to. Not because we want it."
The black veins reach Katherine's jaw. Climbing toward her brain.
She has seconds. Not minutes. Seconds.
"Call someone else." Jake grabs for my phone. "Someone she didn't hurt as bad. Someone who might say yes."
"Won't work." I pull the phone back. "Forgiveness has to cost something. Has to come from someone really hurt who chooses mercy anyway. Easy forgiveness won't cure anything."
"Then she dies right now." Jake's voice climbs. "Because Richardson will never forgive her."
"Maybe someone else will." Mrs. Rodriguez stands. Moves to the bakery window. "If we explain. Tell people what's happening. Some might choose mercy."
"Some." I look at Katherine's gray lips. At death written in black veins. "But not all. And that's their right."
Katherine's eyes find mine. Clear despite everything. Accepting.
"Do it." Her whisper barely makes sound. "Ask them. Let them choose."
"You'll die if they say no." Mom's crying. Trying not to. Failing.
"Then I die." Katherine's smile is small. Sad. Real. "Better than forcing them. Better than being what I was."
I stare at my phone. At Katherine's records. Thousands of names scrolling past.
Can't call them all. Can't even call ten in time.
"We broadcast it." The idea hits hard. Fast. "Guardian emergency network. Reaches every community. Every victim."
"And say what?" Jake asks. "Please save us we're dying?"
"We tell the truth." I open the emergency broadcast system. Only used for attacks. For disasters. For end of the world scenarios. "All of it."
My hands shake typing. Letters blur. I blink. Keep going.
Mom reads over my shoulder. "This exposes everything. The Council will come for you."
"The Council is dying too." I don't stop typing. "Every Guardian using traditional magic is infected. They just don't know it yet."
The message takes shape. Raw. Honest. Ugly.
"We violated you. Took your choices. Your free will. Thought we were helping. We were wrong. Now we're transforming into monsters because of what we did. The only cure is your forgiveness. Real forgiveness. Freely given. We're asking. Not demanding. Not manipulating. Just asking. If you can forgive, we might survive. If you can't, we understand. The choice is always yours. We're sorry."
My thumb hovers.
"This ends Guardian authority forever." Mrs. Rodriguez's voice is quiet. "No more secrets. No more power. Just truth."
"Good." I press send.
The message broadcasts to every Guardian emergency channel. Every linked network. Spreading fast.
Responses flood in immediately.
Messages exploding across my screen. Hundreds. Thousands. Too fast to read.
Some scream hatred. Tell us to die. We earned it.
Some ask questions. Want proof. Don't believe.
Some say three simple words. I forgive you.
Katherine's phone buzzes. Again. Again. Messages pouring in.
Mrs. Rodriguez reads them out loud. "People Katherine controlled. Some forgiving. Four now. Eight. Fifteen."
"Is it helping?" Jake watches Katherine's face. Desperate.
I check with my changed vision. The black veins are still there. Still tight. But slower. Growing slower.
"Buying time." I can barely get the words out. "Not curing. But slowing."
More messages. Flooding in. Drowning my phone.
People Katherine hurt. Violated. Controlled. Some forgiving. Some refusing. Some still deciding.
The veins slow more. Stop spreading. Start to thin. Just barely. Just enough to matter.
"It's working." Mom laughs through tears. "She's healing."
Then different notifications explode across my screen. Wrong kind. Angry kind.
Guardian strongholds. New York. Los Angeles. Chicago.
All saying the same thing in different words.
"This is manipulation."
"Forcing victims to save abusers."
"We will not allow this."
My stomach drops hard. "They think we're controlling people. Making them forgive us."
"We're not." Jake reads the messages. "We're just asking."
"They don't care." Mrs. Rodriguez's face goes grim. "They see any request as control. And they're mobilizing."
The messages get specific. Threatening.
New York Guardian Council is coming to Snow Valley. To stop this "psychological warfare" by force.
Los Angeles mobilizing too.
Chicago sending their strongest Guardians.
Three strongholds. Dozens of dying Guardians who don't want to face what they did. All coming here.
All ready to kill us to avoid the truth.
"They don't understand." Mom's voice shakes. "We're trying to save everyone."
"They understand fine." Katherine sits up straighter. Breathing better. The veins receding faster. "They just don't want to admit they were wrong. Don't want to beg their victims."
My phone keeps buzzing. More forgiveness. More threats. More people taking back their power by choosing.
"We have a day." Jake looks at me. "Maybe less before they arrive. What do we do?"
I look at the messages. At thousands of people responding. Choosing. Deciding their own fates and ours.
At the three strongholds gathering armies.
At Katherine healing because people chose mercy.
"We keep asking." My voice steadies. "Keep telling truth. Keep giving choice."
"Even if they kill us for it?" Mom asks.
"Especially then." I look at Katherine's healing face. At proof that truth works. That choice works. That humanity wins. "This is the only way forward. The only way to stop the cycle."
Jake takes my hand. "Then we fight together."
"No." I squeeze once. Let go. "No fighting. No force. No control. We stand here. Tell truth. Let everyone choose."
"Even if they choose to kill us?"
"Even then."
Katherine's phone buzzes one more time. Different tone. Private message.
She reads it. Goes pale.
"What?" I move closer. "What is it?"
She shows me the screen.
Message from someone named Sarah Chen. Different Sarah. One Katherine controlled fifteen years ago.
"I forgive you. Not because you asked. Because I choose to let it go. But Katherine, you need to know something. The other Guardians coming for you. They're not just angry. They're already transformed. Past the point of cure. They're Connection Eaters now. Just pretending to be human. And they're coming to feed."
My hands go numb.
The Guardian strongholds aren't sending help.
They're sending monsters.
And we just broadcast our location to every transformed Guardian in the country.
