Chapter 164: Chains of Blood: Part One

POV: Lucian

Cold stone. The smell of blood-magic that had been burning in the same space for long enough that the smell had entered the stone itself.

Lucian organized consciousness by inventory rather than by narrative. What was present and what was absent and what required immediate response and what could wait until the immediate things had been addressed.

Present: stone floor beneath him. Chains on both wrists, both ankles, the torso. Torches burning crimson rather than natural fire. Cell walls carved with symbols that pulsed with the same frequency as the chains.

Absent: the pack bond with Araya. The specific thread of it simply not there, not severed in the way it was severed by death but absent in the way things were absent when the mechanism that would have allowed them was blocked.

Present but changed: the mate bond. Lior's thread still there, still carrying the specific quality of the living connection between them, but distant in a way that told him the distance was significant. Somewhere in the fortress, probably. Not outside it.

Immediate response required: inventory of injuries. Assessment of the chains' mechanism. Assessment of the cell's structure.

He tried to sit up. The chains anchored to the stone floor limited the motion and the limiting produced the specific sensation of something that was not ordinary pain but the specific burning of blood-magic contacting the body's own resistance, and he stopped before the resistance became more costly than useful.

The cell door opened.

Three guards. The quality of their approach communicated that they had done this before with prisoners whose capabilities exceeded ordinary wolves, the specific careful positioning of people who were managing a risk and knew it.

"Alive and undamaged is the king's requirement," the lead guard said. He had the quality of someone repeating instructions rather than making policy. "Resistance changes the interpretation of undamaged."

"Where am I," Lucian said. The roughness of his own voice told him dehydration was already a factor.

"Thornhaven Fortress," the guard said. "Deep levels. Blood-magic barriers throughout this section prevent pack bonds from functioning. Your Alpha cannot find you through normal channels."

"What does the king want," Lucian said.

"He will explain that himself," the guard said. They completed whatever examination they had come to perform, applying additional bindings to reinforce the existing chains with the professional efficiency of people who were not cruel and were not kind but were thorough, and then they left.

The cell door sealed with the sound of blood-magic completing its function.

Lucian lay on the cold stone in the crimson torchlight and felt the chains burn and felt the mate bond pulling toward where Lior was and felt the absence of Araya's thread in the specific way that something you rely on being present registers as loss when it is not present.

He organized the available information into what was useful and what was not.

Alive: required by the king. So immediate execution was not the plan.

Isolated: the blood-magic barriers meant no rescue could be coordinated through pack bond. Araya would know he was taken but would not know where.

Mate bond intact: which meant Lior was alive and was somewhere reachable by the bond's frequency.

He began examining the chain anchors.
