Chapter 163: The Assault on Thorn Pass: Part Three
POV: Lucian
They met in a space between engagements where the fighting had temporarily redistributed to other sections of the canyon.
Lior's gold eyes found him before Lucian had finished registering through the bond exactly how close the approach had brought them, and the vampire moved through the remaining distance with the specific focused movement of someone who has one thing to say and needs to say it before the window closes.
"This entire assault is a trap," Lior said. The words had the quality of something prepared in advance and delivered with the efficiency of preparation. "The garrison was ordered to let you through the outer defenses. The real response waits further in."
Lucian processed the assault's behavior over the past hour against this information and felt the specific recognition of a pattern that made sense with the new frame applied to it. The too-consistent withdrawal. The too-structured retreat.
"How many," Lucian said.
"Five hundred minimum," Lior said. "Blood-magic weapons. Specifically designed to hold Lycan strength. They are waiting until you are deep enough that retreat is costly."
"Ronan," Lucian said, already turning.
Lior's hand caught his arm. "There is not time to reach him before the encirclement closes. You need to go now, before the exit seals."
"Our warriors are committed into the canyon," Lucian said. "I am not leaving them."
"You are exactly what they are trying to capture," Lior said with the specific frustration of someone who has seen this before. "If they take you, the mission fails and the warriors' sacrifice achieves nothing. If you retreat now, Ronan can extract the force and the mission is incomplete but recoverable."
Lucian looked at Lior. At the urgent gold eyes and the wounds that had not fully healed from the previous encounters and the hand on his arm that the mate bond made warm in the way Lior's touch was always warm.
"If I retreat, you are here in the middle of a Drevalon assault," Lucian said.
"I have managed worse," Lior said.
Then the canyon walls moved.
Not earthquaking. Something more precise and more coordinated than that, the specific movement of hundreds of figures emerging from concealed positions with the unified purpose of people executing a plan at its designated moment. The positions covered every angle that a retreating force would need to use. Five hundred was a conservative estimate, looking at the density of the emerging force.
Ronan's voice arrived through the pack bond, the mental communication channel that the mating bond had expanded alongside the pack bond, and what Ronan communicated was the Alpha command that reorganized a force from assault to defense in the specific sequence that made it possible for the defense to hold even under the pressure being applied to it.
Lucian moved toward Ronan's position.
Lior moved with him.
The fighting that followed was not the battle they had arrived to fight. It was the battle that Thornhaven had planned for them, the specific engagement that the trap was designed to produce, and every element of it was working as designed. The blood-magic weapons that the fresh forces carried proved against wolf strength what Lucian had not seen them against before, the specific cutting through of defenses that relied on the warrior's enhanced biological capacity.
They fought together. The mate bond's synchronization, which had been a source of fear and political complication for weeks, functioned here as what it functioned as when actual combat required it, the specific coordination of two fighters who did not need to communicate because the bond communicated for them.
Lucian held a corridor that Ronan's withdrawal route required holding.
Something hit him from behind.
Not blade or claw. The blood-magic binding that Lior had warned him about, the chains made of liquid darkness that he had no reference for from previous encounters and had therefore not known to guard against. The specific burning of it was not pain in the way he understood pain. It was the sensation of something bypassing the body's capacity to resist by operating at the level below what resistance could address.
He tried to break it.
The chains held with the specific physics of something designed for exactly what it was holding.
More of them. Arms. Legs. The torso. Each addition reducing what the previous had not already reduced until he was standing in the middle of an active battle and could not move in any direction that the chains did not permit.
"Lucian!" Lior's voice, from somewhere behind the converging vampires that the bond told him were between them.
He felt the bond's desperate pull toward where Lior was fighting to reach him and could not move toward it.
He felt the pack bond with Ronan's force and the operational awareness that Ronan had now identified the capture and was redirecting resources toward it.
He felt the blood-magic pulling him in the direction of the vampires who were closing the distance toward where he stood unable to resist.
Then he felt nothing.
Not pain. Not the chains. The specific absence that came when the blood-magic had been designed to include sedation as its final function, and the sedation was thorough, and the last thing he registered through the bond before it was not registering was Lior's presence and Ronan's presence and the mate bond between himself and Lior pulling with the specific desperate quality of something that knew what was happening and had no mechanism for preventing it.
