Chapter 33

"It must have been very difficult for you, what happened to Michael. No one expected that it would happen. Even I was shocked by the news I heard the next day. If I had just been there, I wonder, would that have happened to my brother?"

"What do you think?" Brent asked him in a serious tone. Michael was fully aware that it wasn't his friend. Whoever was using his body was also the creature that D was certainly avoiding.

But the question was, who was that creature? And what was it? Why would even a demon be afraid of it?

He glanced at the siblings in the rearview mirror. Both were looking at him, but with different expressions. Brent was emotionlessly staring at him in the mirror, while Jia's eyes clearly showed discomfort.

But the show must go on. Later, he knows that he will discover what Brent is hiding. He doesn't think it will be difficult, especially since Brent isn't always like that.

"Well, I think, if you were there too, no one would dare approach Michael. No one would dare hurt him. I don't even know why the other guests kept silent about the accident."

"Most of the guests that night were from high society. Those people don't want issues. And to not disrupt their quiet lives, they choose not to speak about what they know, just so that peace can remain with them. Those people are like garbage, that's why I hate them," Jia said.

"But..." Brent's cold voice came again. It gave him chills, as if the voice came from the highest part of the world. "But maybe everything has a reason. And it wasn't a human who orchestrated your death."

"Huh? What do you mean by that, Brent?"

"Think about it, Jia. Think it hard. Remember what you should remember the night before we were hospitalized. Maybe in that memory, you'll find answers to the questions that are bothering us."

Michael's heart pounded because of what Brent said. Why was he like this? What was really happening to the man?

"Jia?" After a few minutes of deafening silence, Brent spoke again.

"Oh, why, Brent? Are you hurting somewhere?"

"Sleep..." Instead of answering his sister's question, that was what came out of Brent's mouth.

Just then, they passed an abandoned subdivision, so he immediately stopped driving to look at the two in the back. Jia was leaning against the seat, asleep. He looked at her stomach; her breathing was gentle. He's glad she wasn't harmed.

"What the hell are you doing, Brent?! What if something happened to your sister! You know the car was moving—"

"Hell... Isn't that where the one helping you came from?"

He shook his head. He tried to calm himself even though he didn't know what to do.

He cast one more look at the siblings before getting out to check on Jia up close. But the problem was, before he could even get close to the girl, Brent got out and met him.

"Did we break down, Rik?" he immediately asked, looking at the tire. His brow furrowed even more because of Brent's behavior. No doubt, the person in front of him now was Brent. "The tires are fine. Did we run out of gas?"

Before he could even answer, Jia also got out, as if she had been asleep for hours. She was still yawning. "Is there a problem?" she also asked. She looked around. "It's already night, huh, that's why I'm hungry."

If before he was the one causing mystery to the people around him, now he was one of those wondering what was happening. How could it be night already, when they left the hospital early just a while ago?

And to think that Jia's house couldn't be said to be far from the hospital, especially since it would only take a little over two hours, if you really consider it.

When the wind passed by, they all hugged themselves simultaneously. That wind carried something unusual.

"Damn! Why is the ambiance so creepy here right now? Let's get inside, we might get ambushed here suddenly." Jia opened the car door and assisted her brother inside.

When the two got inside the car, he also got in so they could leave that place.

He fell into deep thought. Maybe he would just talk to D later so he could find out what was happening.

Since they were close to the siblings' house, it wasn't long before they saw their house in the distance. Michael was about to continue driving when he felt that something was wrong in the surroundings.

Jia, with her years of working in the police force, plus her active sixth sense which she sometimes used in her job, became alert. There was something strange in the surroundings, and she felt it. She knew there was danger around. There were eyes watching and waiting for them to get out.

She knocked on the window glass. It was bulletproof.

"Something is off." Those were the words Jia uttered. "Weird," she added, pulling out her gun from the back.

"Why, Jia, what's happening?"

"I think we're going to be ambushed," she and Rik said simultaneously.

"We are the target, Brent. I'm sure whoever orchestrated what happened to us in the warehouse won't stop until they kill us. I'm getting out, you leave—"

"Are you crazy, Jia!" the two men shouted at her simultaneously, making her ears ring because of what she heard.

"What did you two just say?!" she said, brows furrowed.

"You can't risk your life, I'm not gonna allow you to step outside! The three of us are safe inside my car. I'll speed up once they start bothering us."

"I will call Chief Gary then—" Before she could even finish speaking, Rik shifted gears.

"You can't do that. You can't risk the life of your comrades, Jia. There's no one around right now, just us, and those heartless people who came here to kill us," Rik told her, making the siblings look at each other.

How did he know that only they were in the area? Where were their neighbors then?

Jia wiped the glass and peered outside. She didn't see a single person around. The lights in every house were off.

Jia looked at her wristwatch. It was only six-thirty, but she felt like it was midnight because of the silence that enveloped the three of them. But that silence was replaced by a gunshot right at the window where she was.

She flinched, clutching her body. "Shit! Shit! Shit!" she cursed repeatedly, especially as the gunshots also became continuous. With each gunshot, she saw the spark of the gun used from somewhere.

"Fck! Drive faster, Rik, before we die here!" she shouted, wishing she could snatch the steering wheel from the man to drive away herself. So she felt a great relief when Rik drove even faster.

Jia thought they would finally get away from that place, but she almost fell forward with the loud explosion of their car's tire, causing the vehicle to swerve violently.
