Chapter 57: His Weakness

Emma heard all this news from her hospital bed, her face full of doubt and shock.

Then a hint of understanding and mockery appeared on her face.

She had actually thought Marcus had changed just moments ago.

So the baby in Evelyn's belly really was his. That would explain what happened at the press conference earlier.

How ridiculous that she had acted like a fool, taking that so-called evidence to confront Marcus.

No wonder Mabel was so protective of Evelyn!

Mabel came over too. She immediately noticed the wound on Marcus and Emma in the hospital room. Just as she was about to enter, the bodyguards blocked her way.

"Move aside! What happened to your injury? That bitch is behind this again!"

Marcus stepped directly in front of the doorway.

"Mother, this has nothing to do with Emma. Please leave!"

"For that bitch Emma, you've caused such a scene today! That woman is a jinx. Marcus, are you sure now! The baby in Evelyn's belly is yours! The heir to the Donovan family!"

Mabel's eyes swept over Emma with venom, then she stared at Marcus with a commanding look.

"Don't forget your previous agreement! Prepare for the wedding."

"Mother, are you really sure that child is mine?"

Marcus's gaze was oppressive, making people feel like they'd fallen into ice. "I'm not so confused that I don't know who I've slept with! This child is supposedly biologically mine—did it just appear out of thin air?"

"You bastard!"

Mabel raised her cane and slammed it hard on the ground, making an authoritative crashing sound.

"The child has already been proven to be yours, the bet should take effect! I think you've been seduced by that Emma in the room! As your adopted daughter, she seduced you—aren't you afraid of being laughed at! Marcus! You're the family heir! You should put the family's interests first!"

Mabel angrily tried to rush in. She raised her cane and swung it down at the doorway.

Marcus blocked it directly, and the heavy stick fell on him.

He staggered from the blow, his arm immediately swelling red and oozing blood.

Evelyn cried out and stood in front of Marcus, tears in her eyes, completely in a protective posture.

"Stop hitting him, Mabel. Even if Marcus doesn't acknowledge me, it's fine. He likes Emma, I'm willing to step aside! As long as Marcus is happy, anything is fine!"

"Look at this! Marcus, do you have to make things this bad!"

Mabel looked past Marcus to Emma lying on the bed, her teeth grinding.

"Bitch! We should have let you die outside back then!"

Emma curled her lips and shot back sarcastically.

"What a shame. Looks like you'll probably die before me. Don't worry, when you're dead, I'll visit your grave every holiday."

These words made Mabel furious.

In the past, Emma was just a timid bitch who followed behind Marcus.

Now she'd become sharp-tongued.

Mabel glared directly at Marcus.

"You're just going to let her curse me like this?"

Marcus remained expressionless, slightly shifting his body to block Mabel's view.

"You provoked her first. Besides, Emma isn't wrong, is she?"

Mabel felt a breath stuck in her chest, her face turning ugly.

Her finger pointing at Marcus trembled slightly. "Marcus! You're going to make me die of anger!"

Marcus didn't back down. "I won't acknowledge the child in Evelyn's belly. I don't care what methods you used. If you want to acknowledge it, you can announce it's your child."

"You! You bastard! So rebellious!"

Mabel was completely enraged, feeling a sharp pain in her chest.

She clutched her heart, her face turning pale, waves of dizziness before her eyes, looking like she was about to faint.

"Mabel!"

Seeing this, Evelyn quickly ran over to support her.

Marcus's expression changed, and he directly supported Mabel, helping her sit in a nearby chair.

Mabel's chest kept heaving, one hand gripping the edge of the chair, trembling continuously.

"You're going to destroy the Donovan family! Marcus! You won't be satisfied until you make me die of anger!"

Marcus said nothing more, but his attitude clearly showed he wouldn't acknowledge it.

Evelyn was also angry, her eyes turning red.

Through the heavily guarded door, she saw Emma enjoying VIP treatment and was seething with hatred.

Emma naturally noticed her look and cheerfully raised her lips at her, continuing to eat the apple beside her.

Evelyn bit her lower lip hard.

She crouched beside Mabel, pretending to wipe away tears. "Mabel, are you okay? Don't get angry over this. If Marcus doesn't want to, forget it. I'm just worried about the reporters waiting downstairs. I don't know where they heard the news, but they all came here."

Mabel played along with her, pointing at Marcus.

"I don't care what you're thinking. This child must be acknowledged! The Donovan family bloodline can't end with you!"

Marcus's face showed coldness that was almost tangible.

Since childhood, Mabel's mouth had always been filled with the glory and foundation of the Donovan family.

But she had never taught him how to love someone.

Marcus looked at the aggressive Mabel and the scheming Evelyn, his eyes growing even colder.

"The reporters are here!"

Evelyn pointed toward the end of the hallway and cried out, "Mabel, what do we do?"

But Marcus was all too familiar with such tactics.

Without the Donovan family's orders, no one could get in from downstairs.

So Mabel was working with outsiders to scheme against him, forcing him to acknowledge this child.

"Marcus, do you want reporters interviewing you at that bitch's hospital room door?"

"One is your ex-wife, one is your current woman. What do you think the media will report?"

"Don't forget, although you're protecting her, there aren't absolutely no loopholes. Occasionally a paparazzo slips in, and you can't chase them away, right?"

Mabel directly seized on Marcus's weakness.

Using Emma's safety to threaten Marcus.

Marcus stood there, a flash of pain in his eyes.

He tensed his jawline and walked toward the other side.

"Where are you going?" Seeing something was wrong, Mabel quickly tried to stop him.

Marcus sneered. "Isn't this what you wanted—an interview? Then let's go to the conference room."

Evelyn wiped her tears, pretending to look heartbroken. "Marcus, let's go."

But Marcus saw through everything.

So Marcus really had fallen in love with that bitch Emma.

He was actually willing to accept the interview there to avoid disturbing her.

The group left directly.

Emma's feelings were complicated for a moment.

She had watched the whole thing and naturally knew about the compromise Marcus had made for her.
