Chapter 45: Do You Love Her That Much?

Marcus stood quietly at the door of Mabel's room.

Mabel was on the phone with her friend, "That useless Emma! The Donovan family is so wealthy and powerful, yet she hasn't managed to get pregnant in three years of marriage!"

"If you ask me, she might as well die out there. We should have drugged her and thrown her into some other man's bed from the start - at least she'd be good for something!"

"The baby in Evelyn's belly is the Donovan family's child. What does that bitch Emma count for! She's carrying nothing but a bastard! She's worse than the lowest prostitute!"

Marcus listened to these piercing words and finally understood what kind of humiliation Emma had endured when he wasn't home!

So this was how Mabel had always viewed Emma.

Even though she was the one who caused everything back then!

Marcus pushed open the door, his voice cold as ice, "What prostitute? What bastard? Mother, enough!"

Mabel was startled by the sudden voice and dropped her phone on the floor.

She was about to scold him, but seeing Marcus's intimidating presence, she softened her tone a bit.

"Isn't it true? Marcus, you need a wife from a suitable family! Not a weak, ignorant woman like Emma. We raised her, so she should serve us!"

"I've told you, I raised her. Mother, if you're dissatisfied with her, you're dissatisfied with me. I had no idea you had so many complaints about me behind my back."

"Marcus, are you really going this far for that bitch Emma?" Mabel said, somewhat pained.

"She is my wife."

Marcus corrected her again, his face dark. "You should go rest. On the way here, I already arranged a care facility. There's professional staff available 24/7. Mother, you'll be very safe there."

Mabel trembled with anger, clutching her chest and cursing, "Marcus! Don't forget who put you in this position!"

"How did I get to this position?" Marcus's eyes were full of disdain. "Wasn't it through my own hard work? Mother, do you need me to remind you what a mess the Donovan family was back then!"

Mabel's face went pale. Her usually well-maintained face now showed several wrinkles. She gasped for air, still wanting to accuse him.

Marcus gave an order that allowed no resistance.

"Get the doctor in here. My mother needs rest! Take her away!"

Almost the instant he finished speaking, the doctors and staff who had been waiting outside all rushed in.

The lead doctor wore a 'Breezy Hill Wellness Retreat' badge and bowed. "Mrs. Donovan, please."

The others stood on both sides, appearing respectful but actually closing in step by step!

"You can't do this! I'm your mother!" Mabel was so angry she nearly coughed up blood. Her face looked terrible, but under everyone's gaze, she didn't want to lose her dignity.

She could only grit her teeth and force herself to walk, getting into the car heading to the care facility.

When everything quieted down, Marcus sat wearily on the sofa.

After barely two minutes of rest, Tyler called. "Mr. Donovan, something happened at the overseas branch! Many manufacturers have been stirred up by our competitors and are going on strike. Also, I found out that the person working against us is very likely Daniel."

"Book a ticket. I'll go there myself. Arrange for someone to watch Emma and Evelyn here. Report any movements immediately."

Back home, Emma had just returned and was listening to prenatal music.

She had just finished one song when a new message came through on her phone.

[Emma, we have a problem. Several shareholders in the Eastern District project don't agree with our design proposal. They're discussing it internally again. This collaboration might fall through.]

The Eastern District tourism project was something they'd been working on for half a month!

How could they suddenly back out now?

"Who's behind those shareholders?" Two names popped into Emma's mind. Was Marcus deliberately making things difficult to support Evelyn? Or was this Evelyn's revenge?

[We investigated. The one opposing most strongly is Evelyn's uncle. He sent a message saying if our studio still wants to take on this project, you need to go to the hospital to see Evelyn.]

Emma was so angry her fingertips trembled. At the peak of her rage, a cold laugh escaped her throat instead.

"Fine, I'll go see her!"

Alan tried hard to stop her, but Emma had made up her mind.

This project represented all the hard work of everyone in the studio. It couldn't be destroyed because of her personal grudges.

But before leaving, she needed to ask Marcus. Marcus was the major shareholder of the entire project. If he didn't approve, no amount of fuss from these people would matter.

Emma dialed Marcus's number. No answer. She tried multiple times with the same result.

Her hope was gradually crushed. Was Marcus doing this on purpose?

Emma couldn't figure out Marcus's character anymore, but she couldn't just sit and wait. She hailed a cab and headed straight to the hospital.

In the hospital's special care ward.

Evelyn was throwing a tantrum. Her phone had been confiscated too. "I'm Marcus's future wife! I'm warning you to give it back right now!"

As she spoke, she grabbed an apple from nearby and threw it at the doctor!

The doctor, used to such scenes, maintained a businesslike attitude. "Ms. Thomas, this is Mr. Donovan's instruction. You need rest. There's too much negative information on phones that could cause emotional distress. We don't recommend you continue using it."

"Give it to me! My body is my own responsibility! How could Marcus possibly tell you to imprison me!"

Evelyn still believed these doctors were acting on their own!

But she had finally waited for her uncle to start squeezing out Emma - how could she not participate?

Hearing that she might be the future Mrs. Donovan, the doctors exchanged glances and returned her phone.

"Please call Mr. Donovan yourself. As long as Mr. Donovan agrees, we'll let you use your phone."
