Chapter 163: Arrested
That night at home, Nancy couldn’t understand what was happening to her phone. A lot of people were texting her asking if she was serious about the money she asked to borrow. She had no idea what they were talking about because she hadn’t asked anyone for money. Yet she could see previous chats on her social media using Carina and Deon’s account to ask for money.
She quickly deactivated the account to avoid trouble and went to bed hoping that everything would disappear by morning.
But by the time she got to work the next day, the problem had gotten worse than it was supposed to be. She was met with some officers before she could even make it to the lobby,
“Miss Brown. We want to talk to you” one of the officers said.
Nancy was not thrilled, police officers coming to her workplace to question her was not a good look for her,
“Really? You couldn’t come to my house?” she asked rudely.
“Unfortunately with the information we got, this was the best place we could meet you.” the police officer replied.
“Well, can I know why you are picking me up, and also can I see your ID?” she asked.
“We want to question you concerning an account you created on social media that has taken money from followers.” the police officer said, showing his ID.
“I… I didn’t do anything,” she said as she took a few steps back, fear gripped her heart.
“We know Miss, we just want to talk to you because we found that the account was linked to you. This is why we are here.”
“I… I didn’t ask for anything. I was busy the whole of yesterday only to…”
“Ma’am, can you please come with us so we can take your testimony? We also found out more things that we would love to question you about so please don’t make it any harder just come with us.” the other police officer said.
“Okay, I will come with you. But I have to talk to my HR first. I can't just disappear.” Nancy pleaded which the police agreed.
“We will request to accompany you.” the officers said.
“You don’t have to, I’m not going to run away, where am I going to run to?” Nancy angrily queried them.
“It’s just part of the formalities.” They explained.
Nancy didn’t think it was a good idea to walk into her workplace accompanied by two police officers.
It was not a good look for her so she decided to abort the mission and just obediently follow them.
“Okay fine, I will go with you.” She finally gave up but just as she was about to walk away with them Deon also walked in. Nancy breathed a sigh of relief.
“There he is, this guy knows about the page, he can testify that it was never created to defraud anyone.” Nancy tried to get Deon to put in a good word for her but he frowned.
“What page are you talking about?”
“You and Carina’s page” Nancy desperately tried to remind him.
“Carina and I never had a page, if anyone created a page then it was obviously a troll.” Deon replied.
Nancy gasped, she remembered telling Deon about the page. How could he betray her like that?
“Mr. Withers You're also on our list of people we would like to invite for questioning, can we make a quick turn at the police station, it won’t take long.” The police assured Deon who looked unhappy with the turn of events but he nodded and followed them to the van, Nancy also did.
It was a quiet ride to the station. Nancy was the first to go in for her questioning.
“Ma’am are you familiar with this person?” The police officer said as she lay Carina’s pictures on the table. Without looking twice, Nancy nodded.
“She’s my colleague at work.”
“We would like to know the last time you saw her. Do you remember?” The police officer asked again.
Nancy thought carefully about it but she wasn’t very sure,
“Maybe about a week ago. I’m not very sure but it was the day she was discharged from the hospital. I went over to her apartment. I believe that was the last time I saw her.” She replied.
“According to our report, she stepped out for a jog in the morning and never returned home. It was around the same time that this account, which is now deactivated. Started asking its followers for money in her name. We did a quick check hoping it would give us some clues on where to find her but it led us to you. Tell us what you know about Miss Grant’s disappearance.”
Nancy shook her head, “I know nothing about it, the page was hacked. I don't know who was behind all those messages.”
“So is Miss Carina Grant aware that you created a page in her name?” The police asked.
Nancy hesitated, then nodded, “yes, she was aware of it.” At this point she feared lying would save rather than telling the truth.
“Miss Brown. When we found this page we contacted Miss Grant’s family. The account is not followed by any of her family or friends, not even Carina Grant herself. Her sister denied any knowledge of the account. Are you telling us the truth?”
Nancy’s body trembled involuntarily, fear gripped every part of her body. She had never thought that the little page she had created to cause mischief would come back and haunt her like this.
The police turned to the next cubicle where Deon was seated with the other police officer, Nancy was hoping that Deon would accept knowledge of the page this time so she would be free but when he was shown the page he shook his head again.
“I don’t know anything about it.” He said, “Carina and I broke up long before this page was even created. If she knows something about that then fine but I don’t.”
Nancy felt weak in the knees, how could Deon do this to her?
