Chapter 51 June’s POV
June’s POV
“Sometimes you don’t just believe me when I say that I see a lot of things that happen in the office and I am also watching out for you every single time just because I don’t want anything to happen to you,” Lucien said with a smile on his face.
“What are you trying to say?” I asked, still trying to process his words because I knew that he had always been watching me, but I didn’t understand when he said that he was always looking for a way to protect me from them.
I don’t need his protection. I can handle everything myself, and I'm just going to stay calm for now because I am new and I don’t want any trouble.
“I saw what she did to you today,” he finally responded to me, trying to reach out for my hand for the second time.
I withdrew my hand again and then looked at him carefully, my eyes filled with surprise. “You did what?” Speaking about what happened earlier, I wasn’t really expecting anyone to have seen that. Where did he stand and how did he see it?
It could be possible that he was lying and I was just trying to pick up something to have a conversation with me. Maybe because he knew that the only person I would have trouble with inside that office was Whitney.
But then, the way he said it, everything was serious, and it was obvious that he knew exactly what he was talking about.
I took a breath and looked at him again. “I didn’t get what you said. Are you really sure or are you just making this up because you want to have a conversation with me?”
“You have to understand that I am not blind, and I am not like the other people who are picking up against you. I am on your side,” he responded.
If he had actually seen us together and didn’t like what my cousin did to me, then he could have confronted her because he had made it clear to me several times that he was going to protect me.
There, he had a very good opportunity and he just forgot to make good use of it. Maybe he didn’t forget. It could also be possible that he was just trying to play his dirty trick and wants me to come on my feet begging for his help.
Such a disgusting fellow.
I wanted to stand up and leave immediately but then, something was still keeping me there. I couldn’t tell what it was, but it was obvious that I didn’t want to leave and he already knew that. Maybe that was the reason why he was trying so hard to get more attention because he knew how much I wanted to be around him.
I’m in big trouble.
“Why didn’t you intervene? You claim you will always be by my side and you will protect me from them. Yet you ran away when you had a chance.” I said to him, keeping my voice.
He just shook his head and smiled a little. “That’s because you wouldn’t even allow me. You won’t appreciate me for helping you out. I just had to stay quiet.”
That was one of the silliest excuses I have ever heard. He didn’t need my permission to do whatever he wanted and I wasn’t going to stop him either.
When he approached Declan and confronted him, I didn’t say anything. Now he thinks I am going to yell at him for trying to save me? That’s just a possibility.
I would be happy, but then I would have preferred to fight for myself. Not somebody else doing it for me.
“What does that mean?” I asked, trying to understand from his own perspective.
“It means,” he said, turning his head slightly toward me, “if I step in every time, nothing changes and that’s because you have not yet made up your mind to let your past go.”
I frowned, confusion mixing with frustration. “So you just watch?”
“I watch,” he said. “And I wait to see what you’ll do.”
I couldn’t tell if it was mockery or if it was one of his strategies to actually make me stronger and face the reality of life. His own way of addressing two issues was scary, and I didn’t know if it was something I would be able to handle.
Maybe it would have been better if I had not had anything to do with him in the first place. It would have been better if I had not gone to his house for the second time.
“That’s not fair,” I said with a slow voice.
“I know it’s not fair and I agree with everything,” he muttered.
I couldn’t believe that he was being honest at this moment and he completely caught me off guard
“But neither is what’s happening to you,” he added. “And yet here you are. Still taking it.”
I looked down at my hands.
He wasn’t wrong.
Again.
“I don’t know what else to do,” I admitted quietly.
While we were just sitting there, he didn’t say anything, but I knew that he had a lot of things on his mind.
Just when I tried to open my mouth to talk, he started talking, although his voice was very low.
“You should start whatever you have inside your mind gradually and see how it comes out.”
He was correct, maybe I should start taking action and give them all a reason to be scared of me. “You are actually making sense. But…” I immediately stopped.
I couldn’t say it to him. It was about Declan and Lucian wouldn’t want to entertain anything from him. But it’s not my fault that I still feel something for him.
“Next time she does something,” he said, “don’t ignore it.”
“And do what? Fight her?”
“Don't fight,” he replied. “Speak.”
I hesitated. “It’s not that easy.” It wasn’t so easy to go against somebody who has so many people behind them. They will all pick up against me and put out stories that are not even correct.
That was one thing I was very scared of.
“I didn’t say it was easy,” he responded almost immediately, although his voice was almost like a whisper.
Then there was silence again. “But you’re not as weak as you think,” he added.
“You’re not going to fix this for me, are you?” I asked.
“No.” The answer was immediate.
That was exactly the answer that I was looking for, even though a part of me wanted him to help me. I was going to handle everyone who came my way by myself.
I took a deep breath and quickly pushed myself up slowly, brushing off my clothes. My legs felt a little shaky, but I stayed standing.
Lucien stood up too. I knew he was already tired, but he might have just been waiting for me to stand up before he did. But somehow, he succeeded in cheering me up.
We faced each other for a moment.
