Chapter 126: Elena's Miscarriage
Ever since arriving abroad, Sophie had relaxed considerably. The constant tension she'd carried back home had finally melted away.
Her belly was growing rounder now, and her cheeks had filled out.
Seeing her condition improve day by day, Matthew finally let himself breathe easier.
He'd wrapped up most of his work overseas, but he couldn't bring himself to leave.
The more time he spent with Sophie, the more she began to notice something was off.
That evening, she stopped him in the living room. "Before you head back, come with me to a prenatal checkup. I'm still not familiar with this place, having you there would put my mind at ease."
Matthew froze for a moment, taking in her gentle features under the harsh overhead light. His lips pressed together briefly. "Alright."
The next morning, Sophie had barely finished breakfast when Matthew arrived.
She opened the door to find him standing there and offered a small smile. "You're early. I thought you'd come later."
Matthew rubbed his temples. "Hospitals get packed on holidays. We should go early."
Sophie bent down to get him slippers, then looked up to see exhaustion written all across his face. She paused. "Don't tell me you worked straight through the night and came here without sleeping?"
He looked absolutely drained.
Matthew didn't deny it. "It's nothing. Just a last-minute issue. Already handled."
Sophie realized he'd carved time out of his packed schedule just to accompany her to this appointment.
She sighed. "You know, if you're swamped, someone else could come with me."
"I wouldn't trust anyone else." He only had a few days left here with her. Once he returned home, seeing her again wouldn't be so easy.
Sophie understood what he meant but didn't know what to say. "You haven't eaten yet, have you? Let me fix you something."
"It's fine, I'm not hungry."
Sophie waved him off and headed to the kitchen. "I already ate. Just help yourself, everything's ready to go."
Matthew smiled and nodded.
After breakfast and getting ready, they headed to the hospital.
The checkup results showed Sophie had a minor cold, but the baby was developing perfectly.
Sophie's heart finally settled.
Both she and the baby were healthy!
Matthew studied the report, clearly in good spirits. "I'm flying back tomorrow. Since I've got time today, let's go out for a bit."
Sophie considered it, then nodded in agreement.
This city sat near the ocean, much like the place she'd grown up.
They went to a plaza by the sea.
The salty breeze hit them head-on. The vast expanse of endless blue stretched before them, lifting her spirits and clearing away days of stuffiness.
Sophie spread her arms wide, letting the sea wind wash over her. "You really put thought into choosing this place."
Sophie had grown up by the ocean. Leaving home to come here meant everything around her was different, but this sea could give her, could give them, a sense of belonging.
Matthew's eyes flickered. His voice dropped low. "I figured you were used to coastal cities. This place doesn't compare to where you lived before, but at least it might give you some sense of home."
Sophie rested her hand gently on her belly. "Thank you," she said softly.
She'd finally escaped all that chaos back home. From now on, she was free.
"Let's go down there." Sophie gazed at the rocks and beach below, unwilling to just observe from the roadside. She wanted to experience it firsthand.
Matthew naturally obliged. They followed a small path from the plaza down to the beach.
Kicking off their shoes to walk on the soft sand, Sophie listened to the rhythmic waves, feeling exceptionally relaxed.
When they grew tired from walking, they sat on a seaside rock. Gazing at the calm, unrippled horizon, Sophie's mind drifted slightly.
Looking at this sea, she couldn't help but think of that scene on Jianghai Bridge.
She turned her head slightly toward Matthew. "Can you tell me? How's Davis Group doing now?"
Before leaving, she hadn't just gotten revenge on Preston, she'd planted a time bomb in Davis Group itself.
Meeting her curious gaze, Matthew laid out Davis Group's recent situation piece by piece.
Bailey's stunt at the birthday party had given Davis Group's competitors plenty of ammunition.
For the first two days, Preston had been single-mindedly searching for Sophie, completely neglecting to handle the negative press. By the time the scandal had spiraled out of control, combined with the documents Serra had smuggled out, Davis Group lost a major project outright. The loss came to nearly ten billion.
Sophie smiled with satisfaction.
Then her expression turned concerned. "What about Serra? Did she safely resign from Davis Group? Preston didn't trace anything back to her, did he?"
Logically speaking, Serra had helped her. Now that she'd escaped, she couldn't just abandon Serra.
"I knew you'd worry about her. The moment she resigned, I'd already arranged a new position for her."
Hearing that Matthew had everything handled, Sophie's heart finally settled completely.
"Though there is one thing that spun out of control."
Matthew's voice paused. When Sophie looked up at him, his eyes turned cold. "I used the approach you taught me. Preston was already starting to suspect the baby Elena was carrying wasn't his, he'd even gotten to the point of ordering a DNA test. But Elena..."
"What did she do?" Sophie's gaze turned icy.
Matthew's lips pressed into a thin line. "The day before the DNA test, she engineered a miscarriage."
He'd originally thought that in her desperation, Elena would turn to Carter for help faking the paternity results. He never expected her to be ruthless enough to choose such an extreme method.
This development had caught him off guard.
Sophie wasn't particularly surprised. She laughed coldly. "She's always been ruthless, to others and to herself."
Besides, once Preston discovered the baby was Carter's, he definitely wouldn't let her off.
Matthew blamed himself. "This is on me for poor planning. If I'd known she'd be this ruthless, I should have exposed her affair with Carter at the party."
Without the baby, she'd lost her advantage. This matter could only be quietly set aside now.
"Wait, that's not right..." Sophie's delicate brows furrowed in confusion. "Even with a miscarriage, Preston shouldn't have let her off so easily."
Preston was too sharp. Elena chose this exact timing to lose the baby, wouldn't he suspect something?
Matthew let out a bitter laugh. "That's where she was clever. You know how she lost the baby?"
Sophie looked at him questioningly.
"She was in a car accident while out with Lady Violet. She lost the baby trying to protect Lady Violet."
Sophie's eyes widened. "So it was all staged!"
Elena had actually been smart this time.
She knew keeping the baby was pointless, the baby had to die in a way that mattered. So she'd traded two unborn lives for Lady Violet's.
A life-saving debt. Even if the Davis family still harbored doubts, for Elena's sake in sacrificing herself to save Lady Violet, they wouldn't make trouble for her.
Besides, Lady Violet had valued those two babies so much. Elena had traded them for her life, so naturally she'd remember this debt. And Preston couldn't touch her now.
"Truly calculating!" Sophie gazed at the lights beginning to glow along the shoreline, murmuring softly.
