Chapter 174: The Garden with Adrain

The training yard was quiet at dawn. Just Adrian and Lila, no audience, no warriors watching. Just two people and the space between them.

Adrian had requested this private session. Claimed he needed to assess her progress without the pressure of observers but Lila suspected the truth was more complicated.

He stood in the center of the yard, practice sword in hand. His movements were fluid as he demonstrated a defensive sequence. Step, pivot, block, counter.

"This technique redirects an opponent's momentum. The only way to defeat them is by using their strength against them, watch." Adrian repeated the sequence slower. "Your body already knows this. Let it guide you."

Lila took her position. Mirrored his stance. Waited for him to attack.

He came at her with controlled precision. Not holding back but not truly trying to harm. Testing her reactions, her speed, her instincts.

Lila's body moved before her mind registered the attack. Exactly as he had demonstrated. Exactly as muscle memory dictated.

The practice sword connected in a clean and perfect collision. Adrian's eyes widened slightly in recognition.

"Again." His voice was rough. "Faster this time."

They repeated the sequence. Over and over. Each iteration faster. More complex. Adrian adding variations. Lila matching them without conscious thought.

Her body knew this. Had done this hundreds of times before. The movements felt like breathing. Natural. Inevitable.

Then Adrian demonstrated a new technique. More advanced. A spinning disarm that required perfect timing and trust between partners.

"This only works if you read my intentions perfectly. If you move at the exact moment I create an opening." His eyes met hers. "Do you trust me?"

"Yes." The answer came without hesitation.

Adrian attacked. A high strike meant to force her defense. Lila blocked. Then he shifted. Dropped his guard deliberately. Created an opening that lasted half a second.

Lila's body reacted. Spun inside his guard. Trapped his sword arm. Completed the disarming technique with precision that shocked them both.

Adrian's practice sword clattered to the ground. He stood disarmed. Vulnerable. Staring at her with an expression she could not read.

Then the vision hit.

Moonlight. A garden filled with white roses. The scent of night-blooming flowers. And a younger Adrian. Less scarred, less broken. Smiling as he taught this same technique to a girl whose face Lila could not quite see but whose body she recognized as her own.

"Again, Lila. You almost have it. Just trust the opening I create." Young Adrian's voice was warm, encouraging. "Do not think just move."

The girl laughed. "Easy for you to say. You are not the one risking looking foolish."

"You could never look foolish. You are too graceful." Young Adrian's eyes held something that made Lila's chest ache. "Now! One more time, trust me."

They moved together in perfect synchronization. The disarm completed flawlessly. The girl ended inside Adrian's guard, close enough to feel his heartbeat.

"See? Perfect." His voice had dropped to a whisper. "You are perfect."

The vision shattered. Lila stumbled backward. Her breathing harsh. Her hands shaking.

Adrian caught her before she fell. His arms wrapped around her, steadying her. Supporting her weight as reality reasserted itself.

"What did you see?" His voice was urgent. "Lila, what just happened?"

"A memory, I think of a garden with moonlight. You were teaching me this technique." Her voice came out disjointed and confused. "But I was younger. We both were and you were smiling. You looked so different when you smiled."

Adrian's arms tightened around her. "When? How long ago?"

"I do not know. Years maybe before Celeste died, before everything went wrong." Lila pulled back enough to see his face. "Adrian, we knew each other before. We trained together. We were close. I remember your voice. The way you looked at me like I mattered."

His jaw clenched. Gold bled into his eyes. "You always mattered."

"Then why can I not remember? Why are my memories of you locked away behind fog and barriers?" Lila's hands gripped his arms. "What happened to us? What was taken from me?"

"Everything." The word came out broken. "Everything that mattered was taken from both of us."

The training yard felt too small suddenly. Too confined. The walls pressing in as the weight of four lost years hung between them.

Adrian's thumb brushed her cheek. A gesture so familiar it made her ache with recognition she could not fully access. "Your body remembers. Even when your mind cannot. Every technique I taught you. Every moment we spent together. It is all still there."

"Teach me more." Lila's voice was fierce. "If training unlocks memories. If my body can guide my mind back to the truth. Then teach me everything. Do not hold back. Do not protect me from remembering."

"Remembering might hurt worse than forgetting." Adrian's voice was pained. "Some truths are easier to live without."

"That is not your choice to make." Lila's hands moved to his face. "I want to remember. Need to remember. Even if it hurts. Even if it breaks me. I need to know who we were before someone stole it from us."

Adrian closed his eyes. Leaned into her touch. For a moment, he looked young again, vulnerable. The weight of four years of suffering visible in every line of his face.

"We were everything." His voice was barely a whisper. "We were mates who knew each other. Who chose each other. Who spent every stolen moment together despite knowing it was forbidden. Despite knowing Celeste would be hurt. Despite knowing the kingdom would never approve."

Lila's breath caught. "We were together? Before the rejection ritual?"

"For six months, we secretly meet in gardens and hidden corridors. Training together, talking for hours, falling deeper every day." Adrian's eyes opened, the gold had spread. The wolf too close to the surface. "And then Celeste died. And the council forced the rejection. And someone made you forget all of it. Made you forget me. Us. Everything we were to each other."

The revelation hit like a physical blow. Six months. They had six months together before it was all stolen.

"Show me." Lila's voice was urgent. "Take me to the places we went. Teach me the things we did together. Help me remember what was stolen."

"Lila…"

"Please. I am begging you. Stop protecting me from the truth. Stop deciding what I can handle. Just help me remember." Tears streaked her face. "I need to know what we lost. Need to understand what I am fighting to get back."

Adrian's control fractured. He pulled her against him. One hand in her hair. The other around her waist. Holding her like she might disappear if he let go.

"The garden. With the white roses. That is where we first kissed. Where I first told you I loved you. Where we promised to find a way to be together despite Celeste. Despite duty. Despite everything." His voice was raw. "I will take you there. Show you. Help you remember. Even if it destroys us both."

Lila clung to him. Her body recognized this. Recognized him. Recognized the way they fit together like pieces of a puzzle finally realigning.

"I think I loved you." The words came out uncertain. "My body knows you. Trusts you. Responds to you in ways I do not understand. That has to mean something."

"You did love me. And I loved you. Love you. Have never stopped loving you even when you could not remember why you mattered." Adrian pulled back enough to see her face. "But knowing that does not fix what is broken. Does not erase four years of damage. Does not make this simple."

"I do not need simple. I need truth." Lila's hands framed his face. "Take me to the garden. Tonight. Show me where we used to go. Help me remember who we were."

Adrian hesitated. War visible in his expression. Fear and hope and desperate longing.

"Tonight." His voice held surrender. "After the palace sleeps. I will show you everything. And may the Moon Goddess help us both survive the remembering."

He stepped back. Distance reasserted. The moment broken but not forgotten.

"Continue training. Your body is close to unlocking everything. Push harder. Trust the instincts." Adrian retrieved his fallen practice sword. "And Lila? When you remember fully. When you know everything that happened. Everything we were. Do not hate me for the choices I made."

"What choices?" Her voice was small.

"The ones that failed to protect you. Failed to prevent your suffering. Failed to stop them from stealing four years of our lives." Adrian's voice was hollow. "The choices that make me responsible for every moment of pain you endured."

Before she could respond, he walked away. Leaving her standing in the training yard with fragments of memories and questions that had no easy answers.

But tonight. Tonight she would get more answers. More truth. More pieces of

the life someone had stolen from her.

And maybe, finally, she would understand what she was fighting so hard to reclaim.
