Chapter 172: Torrent
Asher's POV
'Be careful out there Asher,' Dawn said that morning as I left the Alpha house to meet the golden wolf soldiers that would be going with me to the council to escort the president and his mate to High Moon.
'I will be fine Dawn. Take care of yourself. I will be back soon,' I said kissing her on the head.
When I got to the former Alpha house, the other golden wolf soldiers were already waiting for me so we set out immediately. I hand-picked fifteen golden wolf soldiers to make sixteen of us.
Our journey to the council was uneventful and we saw nothing suspicious on the way so I reported back to Maureen. Maureen told me to seek out the president's mate when I get to the council. She also told me where she would be.
When we got to the council, I went straight to the president's mate to inform her that we were ready whenever they were. I was stopped by a soldier when I wanted to enter the room but the moment I mentioned that I was from High Moon, I was let into the room.
She was sitting alone in one of the rooms attached to the council's conference hall. She looked so agitated and pale. It wasn't an easy thing to step down from such a high post of authority. But I was sure she was more concerned about their safety.
'Good morning, ma'am,' I greeted her.
'Good morning. Please give me the code,' she said looking at me with a guarded gaze.
'Eden, ma'am,' I said and I could see her visibly relax. Maureen had said she decided to set a code that she must ask from me before I was allowed to escort them just in case our plans had been intercepted somehow.
'Thank you for coming this way. What is your name or how do I address you?' She asked.
'My name is Asher, ma'am. Just call me Asher,' I said.
'Thank you Asher,' she said and I nodded in acknowledgment.
'I thought I was supposed to escort you, your mate, and your kids as well ma'am. Where are they?' I asked since she was the only one in the room.
'My mate is still in there handing over to his brother. What an irony,' she said bitterly. 'My kids are in this room,' she said smiling at me then stood up and knocked on an adjoining door. The door opened and two beautiful girls who looked between sixteen and eighteen stepped out of the room looking scared.
I looked at the president's mate with a frown on my face. I wondered why she hid them in the first place.
'I know you are wondering why they are in there. I just wanted to be sure that whoever would be walking through that door would be from the golden wolf before I let them see my children,' she explained.
'I understand now ma'am. In a crucial time like this, one can't be too careful,' I said as I understood her action perfectly.
'Exactly. Although I am sure they wouldn't want to attack us within the council then one can never tell,' she said sighing sadly.
'You all will be okay. High Moon is just a few hours away. We will be there in no time,' I said to reassure her and help her calm down.
There was a knock on the door and the door opened and a male whose face looked vaguely familiar came inside.
'Uncle Mathias,' the girls screamed then ran into his hands for a hug.
'Mathias, what are you doing here? You are supposed to be in the conference hall,' the president's mate said.
'I can't sit there and watch what is going on. It is breaking my heart,' Mathias said before turning to me then he asked, 'Who is this?'
'He is Torrent's friend, he came to say goodbye and escort us to where we are going,' the president's mate lied without blinking.
I wondered who Torrent was. Besides she just lied about the fact that I was Torrent's friend why?
'I see. Torrent, do you now have boyfriends?' He asked facing the older of the girls. And I knew then that the older of the girls was Torrent.
'No way Uncle. I am going to wait for my mate,' Torrent said but didn't refute her mum's claim that I was her friend.
'I will leave you guys now but I want to assure you that the instance this dust clears, I will be in High Moon to see you all,' Mathias said and the girls hugged him again before he left.
'You lied to him about who I am. Why?' I asked when I was sure Mattias was gone.
'I don't know who to trust anymore. He disappeared shortly after I was kidnapped only to return later with no tangible explanation. Although he is still being watched, I don't trust him completely but my mate does,' she explained.
Then I remembered who exactly that was. Elder Mattias. He was the last person anyone should trust.
'He knows where you are going from here right?' I asked.
'Yes. My mate told him,' she answered.
'Does he know about your meeting with the golden wolf?' I asked.
'No, he doesn't. All he knows is we are heading for High Moon,' she replied frowning.
'You met with the golden wolf, mum? Torrent asked with her eyes widened in surprise.
'Yes. Your dad and I did,' the president's mate answered her daughter.
'I would have loved to meet her. She is my model,' Torrent said pouting.
'Ma'am, I am not trying to scare you but Elder Mattias is a very dangerous person; the last person you should trust,' I said ignoring Torrent's talk about her wish to meet the golden wolf.
'Uncle Mathias is a good person. He will never betray Dad or Mum. He is my best friend,' the president's younger daughter who had been quiet all along finally spoke.
'I am not saying your Uncle Mattias is not a good person but what I am saying is that we can not trust him,' I said.
'You are still saying the same thing,' she said angrily.
I would have replied to her but the change of energy in the room made me keep quiet and look around.
Maureen appeared at the corner of the room looking transparent. I knew instantly that she was using her link with the soldiers. I immediately went on one knee to reference her.
'You are here,' I said bowing my head.
'Yes, I am here. Rise, Asher, we have a situation,' she said and I quickly rose to face her.
'What is it Your Majesty?' I asked frowning.
'I looked into the compass. You will be intercepted very close to the High Moon's border. They will be bringing in rogues and their fake soldiers,' she said.
'The soldiers at the fake citadel?' I asked.
'Yes. Rocha and Ian are already on the way to the border. It will rain. Remember to tell the other soldiers,' Maureen said then cast a glance at the president's mate and her kids then said softly, 'See you soon,' and she vanished.
'I must be dreaming,' Torrent said rubbing a hand on her face continuously while her younger sister looked transfixed as she continued to fix her gaze at the spot where Maureen just disappeared from.
'She is indeed powerful. My mind is at rest now,' the president's mate said as she sighed in relief.
The door opened and at that moment the president entered the room looking unhappy. I understood his feelings. His mate did a quick introduction and I shook hands with him.
'Can we go now sir?' I asked the president and he nodded while casting a glance around.
When we stepped outside, there were people outside both male and female. Some were even shedding tears as we made our way to the president's cars.
When we got to the president's cars, I discovered that there were drivers in the three cars already. I had to tell the president that I had people who would drive him and I was going to personally chauffeur him. He agreed and asked the drivers to exit the cars. The driver who sat in the vehicle that had their luggage was visibly shaking from anger but I paid him no mind.
The president's kids were in one car driven by a golden wolf soldier, so also was the luggage vehicle. I drove the president and his mate myself. I made sure the three vehicles were in the middle of the cars conveying golden wolf soldiers. No one could see inside since they were all tinted glasses.
Some wailed and some waved as we drove out of the council. There were people on the road who wanted to catch a final glimpse of the president's family before they left till we left the council.
The journey was smooth but I knew there was danger up ahead. I had mind-linked the other soldiers and they knew exactly what to expect.
'We are almost in High Moon right?' The president's mate asked me when we were thirty minutes away from High Moon.
'Yes ma'am. In less than thirty minutes we will be in High Moon,' I answered.
'I guess we must have worried in vain then,' she said and chuckled so did her mate. I knew they would be happily cuddling each other. If only they knew!
The car at the front suddenly stopped and we all had to avoid collision. I got down from the car and jogged to the front to see that it was a little girl standing on the road. I knew exactly what they were doing. They were trying to distract us but we weren't amateurs.
I quickly mind-linked the other soldiers to guard the president's family as I approached the little girl. From her smell, I knew she was a rogue. Before I could get to the girls rogues poured out of the bush to attack us but they were no match for elite soldiers like us.
To prevent trouble, four golden wolf soldiers guarded the president's family. They killed rogues that went near the cars with so much ease that I almost laughed at how much we were underestimated.
When we had killed all the rogues, I breathed a sigh of relief but I remembered that Maureen said the fake soldiers would be there. Where were they?
'You must be feeling like a champion now won't you?' A voice asked behind me. When I turned around, it was the driver I asked to get down from the luggage truck. He was really looking for trouble. 'Get them,' he said and the fake soldiers came out looking like robots.
Before I could blink it started raining furiously. I laughed hard as the soldiers desolved into nothing. The look of horror on the driver's face was laughable but before he could say anything, one of the golden wolf soldiers hacked him to death.
Ian and Rocha approached us both drenched by the rain. The door of the car with the president's children in it suddenly opened and Torrent ran straight to Rocha and hugged him.
I was in total disbelief when I heard Rocha mutter the word 'mate.'
