Chapter 110: What to do?
Allison's POV
"Hi, babe," Tasha said, as she stepped into the children's ward. "I got food for you." She motioned to the plastic bag in her hold.
Earlier today, Aiden was transferred out of the ICU to the pediatrics ward.
"Thank you," I managed a smile, and made to set the food aside only for Tasha to shake her head in negation.
"Eat that food, Allie. You haven't eaten for the past twenty four hours. Do you want to fall sick too? Do you think Aiden would be happy to see you like that?"
"But I'm not hungry." I sighed, placing the plastic lap on my lap, as I stared at my son's sleeping form on the bed.
Upon getting to the hospital yesterday, I was informed that his heart disease had worsened, and that the pacemaker in his heart had also been removed and replaced with a newer one.
But that wasn't the only thing, the doctor also told me that they would run some tests on Aiden to deduce how to permanently curb his symptoms, so he could properly enjoy his childhood, instead of spending it trapped in a hospital.
However, I couldn't help but feel scared at the premonition of the test results.
For the past twenty four hours, Aiden hadn't done as much as lifting a finger. He was just lying there; deathly pallor and gaunt.
Seeing him broke my heart into miniscule, iredeemable pieces.
I couldn't stand watching my son lying unconscious and going through the agony at all. Most times, I wished I had magical powers, so I could bear all his pains for him.
His body was connected to several beeping machines and an IV stand. He had also gotten leaner within a short time span.
The longer I let my gaze linger on him, the heavier the lump of tears in my throat felt.
"Of course you won't be hungry, but you will have to force yourself to eat or else I'll force-feed you and I'm not joking," She said, all traces of unseriousness evaporated off her face. "So eat while I'm being nice."
"Okay, mum." I rolled my eyes before unwrapping the bag to behold a bowl of seaweed porridge and a bottle of strawberry smoothie.
"I bought something akin to your favorite foods to stimulate your appetite," Tasha explained. "Even I have no appetite but I forced myself to eat because who else is going to take care of you and my godson?"
Moved to tears, I croaked. "Thanks, T. You really are the best."
"I know," She flipped her imaginary long hair; she cut her natural hair into a bob a few months back and dyed it blond. "By the way, David sends his regards. He should be here but his company sent him on an emergency trip abroad. He hopes you can understand."
"I do of course. He doesn't have to explain anything to me." I responded, before spooning a reasonable amount of porridge into my mouth.
As I made to take a second spoonful, Dr Clayton, Aiden's pediatrician walked in, clutching a tablet, and I quickly covered my food and put it away.
"Good day, Miss Wallace." She greeted, her voice soft.
"Good day, Doctor," I replied. "Are the test results back now?" I blurted out, before I could stop myself.
"Yes, that's exactly why I'm here. We need to discuss something," She revealed, darting Tasha a gaze. "In private."
"Don't worry about Tasha. She's his godmother." I reassured the doctor, to which she nodded.
"Let me get straight to the point then. Miss Wallace, your son needs a heart transplant as soon as possible." She dropped the bomb, and my heart cut as my legs turned into jelly.
As if sensing that I would soon fall, Tasha wrapped her arm securely around me.
A heart transplant? All of a sudden? What was I going to do now?
"The pacemaker isn't working anymore?" I forced out after a while.
"It is, but his condition has worsened to the extent where he needs a heart transplant within three months. I will also prescribe some drugs that can help alleviate his symptoms." She replied.
"Three months?"
"Yes."
Fuck, I was really done for. Three months, as in ninty days?
I had just three months to get a new heart for my baby.
"So how do we go about it? How much will a heart transplant cause?" I calmly asked.
"Anywhere from a million to three million. We will also have to source for a matching donor for him which can also take a while." She replied, and I swallowed harshly.
"Okay, thanks. I'll get back to you very soon."
"Very well then. Excuse me." With that, she exited the room.
"Three million, Tasha? Where am I going to start from? What sort of work would give me that in three months?" I asked, as my best friend rubbed soothing circles on my back.
"We will find a way, Allie. We definitely will." Tasha reassured me.
"But how?" I whispered, and she responded by wrapping me in a warm embrace.
