Chapter 107: A new boss?

FIVE YEARS LATER

Allison's POV

"I wonder why the CEO suddenly called an emergency meeting," Tom, my colleague and the leader of the finance team uttered, as we both stood in the elevator.

"Hopefully it's for a good reason because this has never happened in the past three years." I replied, to which he sighed.

"I know right. I hope so too," He said, just as the elevator screeched to a halt. "Let's go."

Walking into the conference room, we saw Mr Isaac Sanders, the CEO conversing with his secretary who was typing fastly into her MacBook.

Tom and I were the first team leaders to arrive at the meeting.

"Good day, sir," Tom and I greeted in unison before taking our seats.

"Good day," He responded, just as the other team leaders sauntered into the room, and greeted him.

After everyone was seated, Mr Isaac cleared his throat and began.

"Good day, everyone. I'm sorry for the inconvenience that this emergency meeting may have caused you all, but I just want you to know that it's for the sake of this company," He began. "I hope my apology is accepted."

"Yes, sir." We answered in unison.

Nodding, he said. "Alright, thank you. Moving forward, I want you to know that my hands are tied and this decision of mine is the only way to help you all keep your jobs."

"Keep our jobs?" I blurted out, sharing a perplexed look with Tom. "What do you mean, sir?"

"Thanks for asking, Miss Wallace," He said. "I'm selling the company to a wealthy investor. No, let me rephrase it, I've sold this company to an overseas investor who would be your new boss. The stocks are crashing and if I hadn't sold the company to him, I would have had to fire all of you, and I didn't want that because I know you all have families that depend on you."

In all honesty, I didn't know the kind of emotion I was supposed to feel at that moment.

Sure, it was quite considerate of Mr Isaac to do so, but at the same time, I couldn't help but wonder if the new boss was really going to let all of us keep our jobs.

What if he found us unworthy and decided to fire us all?

Where would I go from here? What would become of me?

If not for anything, I needed the salary for my kid's wellbeing. And in this time and age, landing a great job with a fair salary was not always easy in the slightest.

"Are you sure the new boss isn't going to fire any of us?" Brian, the team leader of the sales department asked, and we all murmured in agreement.

"Take my word, Brian. He's not going to. I made sure of it before signing this company over to him." Mr Isaac reassured us, and only then did it feel like a great load had been lifted off my shoulder.

"That's great, then," Tom muttered to me. "Because I can't imagine hawking my CV on the street looking for an employer at my old age."

I huffed. "You are barely thirty, Tom."

"Still," He shrugged. "Looking for a new job at this period of my life isn't my plan at all."

Tom and I were both twenty seven, and had both been employed at around the same time, which made us really close friends.

He was one of the few men who I could stand because he was a respectful and disciplined guy, who loved his girlfriend and always proclaimed it at every opportunity he got.

After my ordeal with Leo, I just couldn't bring myself to trust men.

Hell, the majority of them disgusted me, given how they'd make lewd remarks whenever I walked past them or just full on leer at me.

Moments later after Mr Isaac ended the meeting and discharged us, I headed to my cubicle.

Glancing at my wristwatch, my heart swirled in mirth when I saw that I had just fifteen minutes left before I got off work.

Sighing, I swiped my phone open and grinned as my wallpaper; a picture of my son, Aiden, came into view.

I had taken the picture last year at his fourth birthday. And in the image, he was cutting his birthday cake, with a wide grin plastered to his adorable face.

"Take care, Allie." Tom said, as we both walked to the parking lot a while later.

"Alright, Tom. I'll see you tomorrow," I threw him a short wave, as I trekked to my car.

"Welcome," Tasha uttered, stepping aside after opening the door. "How was work?"

"Work was alright. How about you?"

"Same thing," She responded.

"Mummy!" Aiden's voice rang through the room as he ran up to me, the moment I stepped into my apartment.

"Hi, my love. How was school!" I crouched to his height, ruffling his coffee hair.

"Good, we learned how to draw tigers," He responded, to which I nodded.

"That's lovely, baby."

Unlike kids who were his age, Aiden could pronounce words more eloquently, and was a very brilliant kid.

His principal had even called me some days ago to inform me that the school had decided to allow Aiden skip a grade during the next academic year.

As for looks, Aiden had my button nose, my face shape, and my hazel eyes. The only thing he had in resemblance with his sperm donor was his brown hair as mine was black.

"Yes, my heart didn't even hurt at all today," He revealed. "And I feel very good."

"Is that so? I'm happy to hear that," I replied then pressed a kiss to his forehead.

However, in spite of his precociousness, Aiden had a medical condition that hindered his ability to enjoy living like a child of his age.

My son was born with congenital heart disease.
