Chapter 171

Chapter 171
Carter’s POV

I stood at the entrance to the Palace, as the cars rolled in, the guys we had sent out were back.

My heart was pounding hard against my ribcage, my palms became sweaty, and my throat was dry.

So many thoughts ran through my mind.

What if they couldn’t find him? Or what if he was dead before they got to him?

Or even taken captive?

He could be a brat sometimes, but he was still my brother, my last surviving family member, and I couldn’t lose him to death just yet.

The door opened, and I held my breath till he stepped out, clouded with excitement. I wasn’t even aware of when I jumped on him.

“Caspian,” I muttered, as I wrapped my arms firmly around his neck.

He hesitated at first, but then he gave in and patted my back slowly. The fear of death can humble even the most fierce of people.

I broke the hug, and my fist connected with his face almost immediately.

“How dare you?” I snarled, he only stood there staring at me blankly, and I could see the glistening tears pooling up in his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered finally, and I sighed.

“Sorry to cut this not-so-wonderful family reunion,” Nyx spoke up from behind us, his face looking as grim as ever, with frown lines very evident.

“You’re not out of the woods yet, Caspian,” he glared hard at me, “Fergus won’t just let you go that easily, especially not now that his company is on the verge of bankruptcy, so I’ll ask just one last time, what was on that shipment? What were you transporting?”

Caspian looked around warily, “This is not a discussion we can have out here in the open,” he mumbled softly.

“Come on then,” Nyx led the way to his office; his expression had softened after all.

“Here,” Nyx poured us a drink as soon as we entered the office, and shut the door.

“Weapons,” Caspian spoke as soon as he took the first sip, “We were asked to transport weapons from different locations to the Kingdom.”

“Weapons worth ten million dollars, what exactly was he planning to achieve?”

“We were not to ask questions, but rumors had it that he was preparing for war,”

“Fergus is preparing for war, and I’m not aware who he was kidding? I’m not the king of the Lycaons for nothing,”

“Send him a summoning, Carter, it’s high time we ironed things out,”

“You may go, Caspian, a quick advice though, “ he glared hard at him, “Do well to stay out of trouble, you won’t like the outcome if you don’t.”

Caspian shifted his feet, then stood up and walked out of the office.

“What are you waiting for?” Nyx stared at me.

“Let’s talk,” I said as I stood up and approached him.

“I have nothing to say to you, Carter,” he replied lazily.

“Oh yes, you do, so just get on with it, yell if you must, but can you stop with the silent treatment?”

“Carter, not now, please,” he shook his head, and sighed.

“Yeah, you say that every time. Let’s sort it now, please.”

“I hate you,”
“No, you don’t. If you did, you wouldn’t have helped Caspian. I helped that brute because it was the right thing to do,”

“Yeah, good luck convincing yourself that.”

“Carter!!!!” he groaned, and I chuckled.

“I’m sorry,” I replied after a brief silence. “You’re a kind person, but I just thought you wouldn’t approve of the relationship, which I kept hidden from you the whole time.”

Silence.

He stared at me blankly, but didn’t see a word; his lips curved into a smirk.

“I’m not mad at you, just disappointed,”

“I know, and I’m sorry,” I tilted my head sideways.

“We’re cool, just be happy,” he finally caved in, and a wide smile appeared on my lips.

“Do you know if Fergus has any issues with any of the kingdoms surrounding him?”

“None that I’ve heard of,” I muttered.

“He definitely has something up his sleeve.”

“It’s been so quiet these days,  where are the rogue wolves?”

“Our men were able to drive them farther north, so they won’t be much of a problem to us now.”

Silence. Different emotions flashed on his face, and disappeared as soon as they came; there was something othering him. I wish I could say what.

“Give out the order to start the preparations for the crowning ceremony; it should fall on the same day as Elio’s first birthday.”

“Madelyn?” I raised my brows at him.

“She has given her permission,” he nodded, and I took deep breaths.

“It’s high time then,” I sighed and leaned back into the chair.

“Bring Zimora as your date to the ceremony,” he added with a wry smile on his face, and I arched my brows in confusion.

I opened the door to the nursery gently and stepped out. It was crazy how she was able to spend the whole day in this nursery without running out of ideas. Deep down, I couldn’t just wait for Madelyn to return, so I could start having more time with my woman.

My woman, that had a nice ring to it.

“Hey, babe,” she sprang up, wrapped her arms around my neck, and placed a light kiss on my lips.

That wouldn’t do. I pulled her closer by the waist, covering every inch, as I captured her lips in a slow, passionate kiss.

“You seem happy,” she giggled, as soon as we broke the kiss.

“I am happy,”

“Let me guess, Caspian is safe?”

I gave her a single nod, and the smile on her face broadened. It made me wonder what I did to deserve such people in my life, who were willing to forgo past wrong for my sake.

“There’s something else, isn’t there?” She tilted her head sideways, and I chuckled and nodded.

“Nyx has forgiven me, and he has asked that you be my date to the crowning ceremony,” I added slowly.
