Chapter 164

Serena’s POV.

As I navigated through the throngs of partygoers, my heart pounded in my chest with a sense of urgency that refused to be ignored. My eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for any sign of Eliana amidst the sea of faces.

And then, like a beacon in the night, I spotted her – Eliana, standing with her bodyguards in the corner of the room. Relief flooded through me, washing away some of the tension that had gripped me in its vice-like hold. Without hesitation, I made my way towards her, determination lending urgency to my steps.

But before I could reach her, a cold hand closed around my arm, halting me in my tracks. Dread coiled in the pit of my stomach as I turned to face the source of the interruption, my heart seizing within my chest as I met Douglas's icy gaze.

His presence sent a chill racing down my spine, the air growing heavy with an unspoken tension that crackled between us like static electricity. I couldn't shake the feeling that he knew, that somehow he had learned of Graham's actions and was here to confront me.

"What are you doing here, Serena?" Douglas's voice was like ice, his tone betraying none of the warmth that one would expect from a father addressing his daughter.

I swallowed hard, willing myself to remain composed in the face of his scrutiny. "I... I didn't want to stay at the party," I replied, my voice sounding small and insignificant in the vast expanse of the room. "I went back to my room."

Douglas narrowed his eyes at me, his gaze piercing through the facade I struggled to maintain. I could feel the weight of his suspicion bearing down upon me, threatening to crush me beneath its relentless scrutiny.

But I held my ground, forcing myself to meet his gaze with a steely resolve that belied the fear churning within me. I couldn't afford to let him see how much his presence unnerved me, not when Graham's safety hung in the balance.

Douglas narrowed his eyes at me, “You better not plan something or things are going to get very difficult for you. You might not be able to bear the consequences of your actions.” his tone left no room for argument.

As Douglas's warning hung in the air like a dark cloud, I gritted my teeth against the rising tide of fear and frustration that threatened to engulf me. Every instinct screamed at me to lash out, to defy him in the face of his threats, but I knew that any misstep could jeopardize everything.

With a forced calmness that belied the turmoil raging within me, I nodded in acquiescence, my jaw clenched in a silent display of defiance. "I understand," I replied evenly. "I won't cause any trouble."

Douglas narrowed his eyes at me, his suspicion palpable in the air between us. For a moment, it seemed as though he would press further, his gaze boring into mine with an intensity that made my skin crawl. But before he could say another word, someone approached him, drawing his attention away from me.

As he turned to address the newcomer, I heaved a silent sigh of relief, my muscles relaxing slightly as the tension that had gripped me began to ebb away. With a quick glance around to ensure that no one was watching, I discreetly summoned a tendril of shadow, using it to gently prod Eliana's arm.

Eliana's eyes zeroed in on me, her expression shifting from confusion to understanding in an instant. With a subtle nod of her head, she acknowledged my silent plea for assistance, her movements fluid as she made her way towards me, slipping through the crowd with practiced ease.

As she drew near, I gestured for her to follow me, my heart pounding in my chest with a mixture of fear and anticipation. We needed to act quickly, before Douglas grew suspicious of our clandestine exchange.

As Eliana reached me with furrowed brows, concern etched into every line of her face, I felt a rush of gratitude for her unwavering support. But as she questioned me about the source of my distress, I couldn't help but feel a heavy weight settle in the pit of my stomach.

"We're in trouble," I confessed as I recounted the events that had transpired in Douglas's room. Eliana listened intently, her expression shifting from confusion to understanding as I relayed the gravity of our situation.

But as I finished speaking, Eliana's lips curved into a smile, her eyes alight with a glimmer of hope. "That's wonderful news, Serena," she exclaimed. "If Graham has found something that could thwart Douglas's plans, then perhaps there's still hope for us yet."

I shook my head, my heart heavy with the weight of the truth I had yet to reveal. "You don't understand," I interjected. "Graham's scent is all over Douglas's room. If he finds out..."

Realization dawned in Eliana's eyes, her expression shifting from optimism to concern in an instant. But even as worry clouded her features, she remained steadfast in her resolve.

"Stay calm, Serena," she urged. "I'll take care of it. I'll make sure that Douglas doesn't suspect a thing."

I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me as I watched Eliana spring into action, her movements decisive and purposeful. But as I moved to thank her, she cut me off with a gentle shake of her head.

"This is my duty," she insisted. "You don't have to thank me. Just focus on keeping Graham safe."

With a final nod of reassurance, Eliana disappeared into the crowd, leaving me with a renewed sense of hope and determination. As I watched her go, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together, united in our shared purpose to protect the ones we loved. Maybe I did attain a friend amidst this mess.
