Chapter 141: Sofia
The world around me is a blur as I lean against Nate, my body trembling, my heart pounding with a mix of fear, relief, and something darker. Anger. It’s there, simmering beneath the surface, burning hotter with every breath I take. My father dared to take my son—my Ethan. He tried to rip away the one piece of light I have left. I feel the rage building, filling the space where my fear had been, turning into something sharp and unrelenting.
I pull away from Nate, my legs unsteady as I stand, my eyes locking on the figure sprawled on the ground. My father. He’s still breathing, his chest rising and falling, the blood pooling around him from the wound in his side. He looks smaller now, weaker, and the sight of him lying there, helpless, should bring me some sense of satisfaction. But it doesn’t. It’s not enough. Not after everything he’s done.
“Sofia, wait,” Nate says, his voice filled with concern as he reaches for me, his hand brushing my arm. I turn to him, my eyes burning, and I shake my head, pulling away from his touch.
“No,” I whisper, my voice trembling with rage. “He doesn’t get to walk away from this. He doesn’t get to hurt us and just... survive.”
Nate’s eyes widen, and I can see the conflict there—the fear, the worry. He doesn’t want me to do this. He wants me to walk away, to let him handle it, to be the Sofia who leans on him and the others for strength. But I can’t do that. Not this time. Not after he tried to take Ethan from me.
I take a step forward, my gaze locked on my father, my heart pounding in my ears. He stirs, his eyes fluttering open, and for a moment, they meet mine. There’s a flicker of recognition there, a flash of something like fear, and I feel a cold smile tugging at my lips.
“Look at you,” I say, my voice low, filled with venom. “You always thought you were so strong, so untouchable. But now? You’re nothing.”
He grimaces, his hand moving to the wound in his side, his fingers slick with blood. “Sofia...” he gasps, his voice weak, barely a whisper. “You... you can’t... do this.”
I laugh, the sound bitter and cold, and I take another step closer, my hands clenched into fists at my sides. “Can’t I?” I say, my voice trembling with anger. “After everything you’ve done? After all the pain you’ve caused? You took everything from me. You tried to take my son. And you think I can’t do this?”
He looks up at me, his eyes filled with something I can’t quite place—fear, desperation, maybe even regret. But it doesn’t matter. None of it matters. Because I see him for what he truly is. A monster. A coward. And I won’t let him hurt us anymore.
I hear Nate behind me, his voice pleading, but it’s distant, like a whisper on the wind. My focus is on my father, on the man who has haunted my nightmares for as long as I can remember. The man who turned my life into a living hell, who tried to break me, who almost succeeded. And now, he’s at my mercy.
I drop to my knees beside him, my eyes locked on his, my heart pounding with a mix of rage and grief. I reach out, my hand wrapping around his throat, my fingers digging into his skin. He gasps, his eyes widening, and I feel the power surge through me, the sense of control I’ve never had before.
“This is for Ethan,” I whisper, my voice shaking. “For every time you hurt me. For every time you made me feel small, worthless. This is for everything you took from me.”
His eyes widen, his mouth opening in a silent plea, and I feel the tears spill down my cheeks, hot and angry. My grip tightens, my heart pounding, and I can feel the darkness closing in, the rage consuming me, filling every part of me until there’s nothing else.
But then I hear it. A sound, soft and innocent, cutting through the darkness. A cry. Ethan. My heart lurches, my head snapping up, and I see Riley standing in the doorway, Ethan cradled in his arms, his tiny face red with tears. He’s crying for me, his little hands reaching out, and in that moment, everything shifts.
The rage, the darkness, it all seems to fade, replaced by something else. Love. Pure, overwhelming love. I look down at my father, his face pale, his eyes filled with fear, and I feel my grip loosen, my hand falling away. He’s not worth it. He’s not worth losing myself, losing the chance to be the mother Ethan needs.
I stand, my legs unsteady, my heart pounding in my chest as I turn away from my father, my eyes locking on Ethan. He’s still crying, his little face scrunched up, and I move toward him, my arms reaching out, my heart aching with the need to hold him, to comfort him.
Riley steps forward, his eyes filled with relief as he hands Ethan to me, and I pull him close, my tears falling onto his soft hair. “It’s okay, baby,” I whisper, my voice breaking. “Mommy’s here. I’m here.”
Ethan’s cries start to quiet, his tiny body relaxing against mine, and I hold him tightly, my heart swelling with love and protectiveness. I look up at Riley, then at Nate, who’s standing there, his eyes filled with concern, and I give them a small, shaky smile.
“I’m okay,” I say, my voice barely audible. “I’m not... I’m not going to let him take anything else from me. From us.”
Nate steps forward, his hand resting on my shoulder, his eyes searching mine. “Sofia,” he says, his voice soft, filled with emotion. “You don’t have to do this alone. We’re here. We’re always going to be here.”
I nod, my throat tight, and I look back at my father, his body still on the ground, his breaths shallow. He’s not a threat anymore. He’s nothing. And I won’t let him control me, won’t let him turn me into someone I’m not. I have too much to live for—Ethan, the boys, the family we’ve built together. And I won’t let the past take that away.
I turn away, my focus on Ethan, on the warmth of his little body in my arms, the soft rise and fall of his breaths. He’s all that matters. Him, and the love we’ve found, the life we’re going to build together.
“Let’s go home,” I whisper, my voice steady, filled with determination. “Let’s take our son home.”
Nate and Riley exchange a glance, then nod, their expressions softening. Danny appears in the doorway, his eyes widening as he takes in the scene, and he gives me a small, approving nod. Together, we turn, leaving the darkness behind, stepping out into the cold night air, the promise of a new beginning ahead of us.
And as I hold Ethan close, his tiny hands clutching at my shirt, I know that no matter what happens, no matter what we face, we’ll face it together. As a family. And my father? He’s nothing but a memory, a shadow that no longer has the power to hurt me. I’m done being afraid. I’m done letting him win.
I press a kiss to Ethan’s forehead, my heart swelling with love, and I take a deep breath, my eyes focused on the horizon. It’s time to move forward. It’s time to live. For me. For Ethan. For all of us.
