Chapter 142: Danny
The night air is crisp as we step out of that godforsaken building. I take a deep breath, trying to let it cleanse me, to let the cold wind strip away the tension that’s coiled tight inside me. I look over at Sofia, holding Ethan close, her eyes fierce despite the tears that have stained her cheeks. I nod to myself, feeling a surge of pride. She’s stronger than anyone I’ve ever met, and tonight she proved it again.
Riley walks beside her, his arm brushing against hers, as if to silently remind her that he’s there, that we’re all here. I hang back a little, letting them have that moment, my eyes scanning our surroundings. I can’t let my guard down yet. Not until we’re all home and this nightmare is behind us. Not until we’re safe.
The van is parked just a few yards away, the engine still running, the headlights casting a dim glow across the gravel. Nate steps ahead, opening the back door for Sofia, helping her inside. She slides in carefully, still holding Ethan, who’s starting to drift off in her arms, his soft, uneven breaths audible in the silence. I feel a pang in my chest, a mix of love and anger. He should have never had to go through this. He’s just a baby, innocent and pure, and my heart aches thinking of how scared he must have been.
I clench my fists, my jaw tightening as I force myself to keep my focus. There’s no time for emotions right now. We need to get out of here. We need to make sure that bastard doesn’t get another chance to hurt them.
I exchange a look with Riley, who gives me a tight nod, then climbs into the van beside Sofia. I take one last look around, my eyes narrowing at the shadows, at the dark, empty landscape. My gut tells me we’re in the clear, but I can’t shake the feeling that we’re still being watched, that the danger isn’t over. Not yet.
I get in the driver’s seat, Nate taking the passenger side, and I glance in the rearview mirror, my eyes locking on Sofia. She’s leaning back, her head resting against the seat, her eyes closed, her arms wrapped protectively around Ethan. She looks exhausted, her face pale, her body trembling slightly, and I feel that familiar surge of protectiveness, the one that’s always there, the one that’s only grown stronger since the day she walked into our lives.
I put the van in gear, the tires crunching over the gravel as we pull away, the building fading into the darkness behind us. Nate is silent beside me, his gaze fixed on the road ahead, his jaw clenched, his eyes filled with that same determination I feel. We’re not done. Not by a long shot. But we’re going to make sure that Sofia and Ethan are safe. No matter what it takes.
The drive is quiet, the only sound the hum of the engine and the soft breathing of Ethan as he sleeps. I glance in the mirror again, watching Sofia, the way she holds him, the way her eyes flicker open every now and then, as if she’s making sure he’s still there, still safe. It breaks my heart, seeing her like this—so vulnerable, so afraid. But at the same time, it fills me with a fierce resolve. We’re not going to let her down. Not ever.
“We’re almost there,” I say, my voice low, breaking the silence. Nate nods, his eyes still on the road, and I can see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands are clenched into fists in his lap. He blames himself—I know he does. We all do. We should have been there sooner, should have protected them better. But we can’t change the past. All we can do is make damn sure it never happens again.
When we finally pull up to the house, I cut the engine, the silence settling over us like a heavy blanket. I turn to look at Sofia, her eyes meeting mine, and I give her a small, reassuring smile. “We’re home,” I say, my voice soft.
She nods, her eyes glistening with tears, and she looks down at Ethan, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. “Thank you,” she whispers, her voice breaking, and I feel my chest tighten, my heart swelling with emotion.
Nate is out of the van first, opening the door for Sofia, helping her out, his hand resting on her back as they walk toward the house. Riley follows, his eyes scanning the surroundings, his body tense, ready for anything. I take a deep breath, my hand resting on the steering wheel for a moment, my eyes closing as I let the exhaustion wash over me. It’s over. At least for tonight.
I step out of the van, my feet heavy as I walk toward the house, the cold air biting at my skin. The front door is open, the warm light spilling out into the night, and I follow them inside, my heart finally starting to slow, the tension slowly easing from my body.
Sofia is sitting on the couch, Ethan still in her arms, his tiny face peaceful as he sleeps. Nate is beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder, his eyes filled with concern, with love. Riley is by the window, his eyes scanning the street, his body still on high alert. And I stand there, taking it all in, feeling the weight of everything that’s happened, everything we’ve been through.
I move to the couch, sitting down beside Sofia, my hand resting on her knee. She looks at me, her eyes filled with tears, and she gives me a small, shaky smile. “Danny,” she whispers, her voice breaking. “I was so scared.”
I nod, my throat tight, and I reach up, brushing a tear from her cheek. “I know,” I say, my voice barely audible. “But you’re safe now. You and Ethan. We’re not going to let anything happen to you. I promise.”
She nods, her eyes closing as she leans into me, her body trembling, and I wrap my arm around her, holding her close, my heart aching with love, with relief. We’re home. We’re together. And that’s all that matters.
Nate clears his throat, his voice breaking the silence. “We need to talk about what comes next,” he says, his eyes locking on mine, then shifting to Riley. “This isn’t over. He’s still out there. And we need to be ready.”
Riley nods, his gaze still on the window, his body tense. “We’re not taking any chances,” he says, his voice low. “We need to make sure this place is secure. We need to make sure they’re safe.”
I nod, my jaw tightening, my eyes locking on Sofia and Ethan. “We’ll do whatever it takes,” I say, my voice filled with determination. “We’re not letting him get anywhere near them. Not ever again.”
Sofia looks up at me, her eyes filled with fear, with hope, and she nods, her hand resting on mine. “We’ll get through this,” she whispers, her voice steady, filled with a quiet strength. “Together.”
I smile, my heart swelling with love, and I press a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Yeah,” I say, my voice soft. “Together.”
And as I hold her, as I look at the faces of the people I love, I know that no matter what comes next, no matter what we have to face, we’ll face it together. As a family. And we’ll come out stronger. Because we have something worth fighting for. Something worth protecting. And we’re not going to let anyone take that away from us.
