Chapter 30: Training Grounds
Elder Blackwood's death cast a dark shadow over Moonhold. They buried him in the old graveyard behind the sanctuary, marking his resting place with stones and wildflowers. Kai stood silently, their heart heavy with grief and duty.
"We need to prepare," Kai announced later that day, standing before the gathering wolves in the main hall. "Fenrir may have the other pendants, but we still have two days before the lunar eclipse. Two days to train, to plan, to fight back."
"With what army?" Luna asked. "We're barely thirty wolves against hundreds of shadow-bound forces."
Vex stepped forward. "Not quite. My scouts report that many wolves escaped from Moonhaven and Silverfang territory. They're hiding in the forests, waiting for leadership."
Hope flickered in Kai's chest. "Then we'll give them something to fight for. Rowan, send messengers to find these survivors. Tell them Moonhold's gates are open to any wolf who opposes Fenrir."
By nightfall, small groups began to arrive—exhausted, scared wolves from both packs. Former enemies now shared the same fear, the same loss. Kai watched as Blackthorn and Silverfang wolves eyed each other warily across the courtyard.
"They won't just start working together," Rowan said, joining Kai on the balcony facing the training grounds. "These rivalries run deep."
Kai nodded. "Then we'll give them something new to focus on."
The next morning, Kai gathered all able-bodied wolves in the training grounds—a big, flat area behind Moonhold that had once been used to teach young wolves to fight.
"From now on, there are no Blackthorns or Silverfangs," Kai stated. "Only wolves who want to survive. Only wolves who want to stop Fenrir."
Murmurs spread through the crowd. A big Blackthorn wolf stepped forward. "Why should we trust Silverfangs? They've been our enemies for generations."
"And how has that worked out for us?" Kai asked. "Our homes destroyed, our people scattered. All because we couldn't stand together."
Rowan moved to Kai's side. "Fenrir doesn't care which pack you come from. He'll destroy us all the same."
Kai looked out at the unsure faces. "Each pack has strengths the other lacks. Blackthorns are masters of stealth and tracking. Silverfangs excel at direct combat and strategy. Together, we can create a fighting force Fenrir won't expect."
"And who will lead this training?" a young Silverfang wolf called out.
Kai turned to Vex, who stood quietly at the edge of the crowd. "Someone who knows Fenrir's tactics better than anyone. Someone who can teach us how to fight shadow wolves."
Surprise flickered across Vex's scarred face. He hadn't expected to be trusted so quickly.
"I'll do my best," he said, moving forward. "But I'll need help."
"Luna will coordinate with you," Kai decided. "She knows both packs' fighting styles."
The training started immediately. Vex divided the wolves into mixed groups, causing Blackthorns and Silverfangs to work together. The first exercises were awkward, with old rivalries flaring into arguments and even short scuffles.
"This isn't working," Luna sighed, watching two young wolves snap at each other instead of focusing on the training dummy.
"Give it time," Kai said. "They need to learn each other's strengths."
By midday, small improvements emerged. A Blackthorn scout showed a Silverfang warrior how to move quietly through underbrush. In return, the Silverfang showed how to stand ground against a larger opponent.
Kai joined several training classes, working alongside wolves from both packs. Their pendant glowed faintly as they trained, telling everyone of what was at stake.
"Fenrir's forces fight as one," Vex revealed during a break. "They don't think for themselves—they follow his will without question. That's their weakness."
"And our strength is that we can think independently," Rowan added. "We can adapt."
As the sun began to set, Kai noticed two young wolves—a Blackthorn girl and a Silverfang boy—practicing together away from the others. They moved in perfect sync, combining their packs' skills into something new.
"Look," Kai nudged Rowan. "It's starting to work."
More wolves began to imitate the young pair, forming hybrid fighting styles that played to individual strengths rather than pack traditions. By nightfall, the training grounds buzzed with activity as former foes became tentative allies.
Luna approached Kai with a happy smile. "It's working better than I expected. We might actually have a chance."
"A small one," Eira warned, joining them. "But better than none."
That night, Kai called a council meeting in the Moon Pool room. The water's surface mirrored the nearly-full moon above, casting silver light across their faces.
"The lunar eclipse is tomorrow night," Kai told them. "Fenrir will perform the Blood Moon ritual at midnight, when the eclipse reaches its peak."
"We need to strike before then," Vex said. "Once the ritual begins, it will be too late."
"But how do we get past his forces?" Luna asked. "We're still outnumbered."
Kai's fingers traced the crescent moon pendant at their necks. "I've been studying the ancient texts. There's a secret passage that leads from Moonhold directly to the Ritual Stones where Fenrir will perform the ceremony."
"The Ancestors' Path," Eira nodded. "But it's been lost for centuries."
"Not lost," Kai amended. "Hidden. And only someone with the blood of both packs can reveal it."
Rowan's eyes widened. "You've found it?"
"I think so," Kai said. "Tonight, I'll try to open it. If I succeed, we can send a small team through while the main force creates a distraction at the front gates."
"A dangerous plan," Vex warned. "But it might work."
As the council dispersed to prepare, Kai stayed by the Moon Pool. The water's surface changed, showing flashes of the other bloodline children—all six of them imprisoned in Fenrir's camp, their pendants taken.
"I'll save them," Kai whispered. "Somehow."
A hand touched their shoulder. Kai turned to find a young Blackthorn wolf they didn't recognize.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," the boy said. "But there's something you should know."
"What is it?" Kai asked.
"I was Fenrir's prisoner before I escaped," the boy explained. "I heard him talking about the ritual. He said he needs the blood of all seven bloodline children—but he only has six prisoners."
Kai frowned. "Because I'm still free."
"No," the boy shook his head. "He said he already has the seventh bloodline child. Someone here in Moonhold is working for him."
Before Kai could reply, shouts erupted from above. They rushed up the stairs to find chaos in the main hall. Luna was holding a struggling wolf while others gathered around.
"What's happening?" Kai asked.
"We caught him sending signals to Fenrir's forces," Luna explained, tightening her grip on the traitor. "He was going to open the gates tonight."
Kai's blood ran cold as they recognized the face of the caught spy. It was one of Vex's deserters—the young female wolf who had spoken so eloquently about fleeing Fenrir's cruelty.
"Where is Vex?" Rowan asked, looking around nervously.
"Gone," the young Blackthorn boy said. "I saw him heading toward the eastern tunnels with something in his hands."
Kai's hand flew to their throat. The pendant was missing.
