Chapter 29: The Deserters

Kai and Rowan stood side by side on Moonhold's ancient walls, watching the shadow wolves surround the mountain.

"We're trapped," Luna said, her face pale with fear. "There must be hundreds of them."

Eira put a protective charm at the main entrance. "The old magic in these walls will keep them out for now, but we need a plan."

Below, Fenrir held up the bloodied pendant for all to see. The red-haired woman's body lay still at his feet. A chill ran down Kai's spine.

"You're next, little wolf!" Fenrir's voice echoed up the mountain. "I'll have all seven pendants before the lunar eclipse."

"Lunar eclipse?" Kai turned to Eira. "When is that?"

"Seven days from now," she answered grimly. "The night when the moon's power is weakest."

"Perfect timing for the Blood Moon ritual," Rowan growled.

As night fell, the shadow wolves set up camp around the mountain, blocking all escape paths. Inside Moonhold, Kai gathered everyone in the main hall.

"We need to hold out until reinforcements arrive from Moonhaven," they said, trying to sound confident despite their fear.

A young scout burst into the room. "Someone's coming! A small group from the east path!"

"More shadow wolves?" Luna asked, grabbing for her weapon.

"No," the scout said, confused. "They're carrying a white flag."

Kai, Rowan, and Luna carefully approached the eastern lookout. Through the darkness, they spotted five forms slowly climbing the path. The one in front carried a plant with a white cloth tied to it.

"It could be a trap," Luna warned.

"I know that wolf," Rowan said suddenly, pointing to the leader. "That's Vex, Fenrir's right-hand."

"What's he doing here?" Kai wondered.

When the group reached the small hill before Moonhold's entrance, they stopped. The leader—a tall, scarred wolf with silver-streaked black fur—stepped forward.

"I am Vex," he called out. "Former lieutenant to Fenrir. We seek sanctuary."

"Why should we trust you?" Rowan screamed back.

"Because I bring information," Vex replied. "About Fenrir's plans for the Blood Moon ritual. And because we're done following a madman."

Kai and Rowan exchanged looks. After a tense discussion, they agreed to let the deserters in—but one at a time, and without weapons.

In the main hall, Vex stood before them, his head bowed. The four wolves who came with him looked tired and afraid.

"Speak," Kai ordered. "Why have you deserted Fenrir?"

Vex raised his eyes. A long scar ran across his face, through one milky blind eye. "I served Fenrir for years, believing he fought for wolves who had been cast out by their packs. But he's changed. The shadow binding has corrupted his mind."

"Shadow binding?" Eira asked sharply.

"Ancient dark magic," Vex explained. "It gives him power, but each time he uses it, he loses more of himself. Now he talks to shadows, makes deals with spirits no one else can see."

"What does he want with the bloodline children?" Kai asked.

"The Blood Moon ritual requires seven pendants, each containing a fragment of the original Moon Stone," Vex said. "Combined with the blood of those who carry the ancient bloodline, they can control the moon itself."

"And that's why he killed the red-haired woman," Rowan said, his voice tight with anger.

Vex nodded sadly. "Her name was Ember. She was from the Amber Plains Pack. Fenrir... he drained her blood into a black crystal. He plans to do the same to all of you."

A chill silence fell over the hall. Kai touched their pendant, feeling its warm beat against their skin.

"Why desert now?" Luna asked suspiciously. "Why not earlier?"

"Because of what happened yesterday," one of the other deserters spoke up. She was young, barely older than Kai. "Fenrir sacrificed twenty of our own people to strengthen the shadow binding. He said they were... necessary losses."

"That was when we knew we had to leave," Vex continued. "Some of us have been planning it for weeks. We waited until Fenrir was distracted by finding Ember."

"And now you want protection," Kai said.

"We want to help," Vex corrected. "Fenrir's forces are split. Half are here, surrounding Moonhold. The rest are attacking Moonhaven and Silverfang territory. He's desperate to find the other bloodline children before the eclipse."

Rowan stepped forward. "My father—is he safe?"

Vex's face darkened. "Alpha Silverfang was taken by Fenrir's elite guard. They're bringing him here, hoping to use him as bait to lure you out."

Rowan's hands clenched into fists. Kai put a calming hand on his arm.

"What about Elder Blackwood?" they asked.

"Fighting, last I heard," Vex responded. "He's rallied the Blackthorn Pack against the shadow wolves. But they're outnumbered."

"We need to help them," Kai said.

"First, we need to secure Moonhold," Luna reminded them. "If this truly is the original pack sanctuary, it holds power Fenrir can't be allowed to have."

"She's right," Eira agreed. "And we need to protect the remaining bloodline children."

Kai studied the maps they'd found. "According to these, there should be one in the Western Forests, another in the Southern Meadows, two in the Northern Mountains, and one in the Eastern Swamps."

"My pack can help," Vex offered. "We know Fenrir's routes, his plans. We can send warnings."

"If we can trust you," Rowan said, still suspicious.

Vex met his gaze steadily. "Test me. Ask me anything about Fenrir's forces."

For hours, they questioned Vex and the other deserters. Their information matched what the scouts had reported. Slowly, Kai started to believe they were telling the truth.

As dawn approached, Kai made their choice. "Vex, you and your pack can stay. But you'll be watched. Any sign of betrayal—"

"And you'll kill us," Vex finished quietly. "I understand."

A plan took shape. They would send messengers to warn the other bloodline children while fortifying Moonhold against attack. Vex would help them understand Fenrir's tactics.

As the others scattered to begin preparations, Vex asked to speak with Kai alone. Rowan insisted on staying by their side.

"There's something else you should know," Vex said quietly. "Something Fenrir kept secret from everyone but me."

"What is it?" Kai asked.

"The Blood Moon ritual doesn't just give control over wolves," Vex explained. "It strips away the human side completely. If Fenrir succeeds, all wolves will become mindless beasts under his command."

Kai felt the blood drain from their face. "That's why he's gone mad. He's losing his humanity to the shadow binding."

"Yes," Vex agreed. "And there's one more thing." He paused. "The ritual requires eight pendants, not seven."

"Eight?" Rowan frowned. "But there are only seven bloodline children."

"The eighth pendant belongs to the one who will control the ritual," Vex said. "Fenrir already has it. He wears it around his neck, hidden under his clothes."

"Where did he get it?" Kai asked.

Vex's blind eye seemed to look right through them. "From your father, Kai. The night he killed him."

Before Kai could reply, the warning horn blared from the watchtower. They rushed outside to see a lone person stumbling up the mountain path. Blood stained their clothes and matted their hair.

"Elder Blackwood!" Kai gasped in horror.

The old wolf fell at the entrance to Moonhold. Kai and Rowan ran to him, helping him inside. His breathing was shallow, his skin cold.

"Fenrir... attacked... Moonhaven," he wheezed. "All... gone..."

"What do you mean, gone?" Kai asked, their heart racing.

Elder Blackwood grasped Kai's hand with surprising power. "Everyone... dead or captured. Fenrir has... the other pendants. All but... yours."

Kai felt the world spinning around them. "No, that's not possible. The maps—"

"Maps were wrong," Elder Blackwood whispered. "Or Fenrir was... one step ahead."

With his last breath, Elder Blackwood pulled Kai close. "Only you... can stop him now. The eighth pendant... is the key."

His hand fell limp. Outside, Fenrir's howl rang across the mountains, triumphant and chilling.

"Too late, little wolf!" he called. "The Blood Moon rises in three days. And I have them all!"
