Chapter 238
Chapter 238
The hospital room was filled with Mike's cursing.
For a moment, Maria and Nina forgot their earlier grievances and both turned their fury on Edith.
"Edith, what do you think you're doing! Tell them to let your father go right now!" Nina scolded.
Edith's expression remained indifferent. "I don't have a father anymore. Who are you talking about?"
Nina's face turned livid.
Maria, meanwhile, looked behind Edith. Not seeing Christopher's shadow, she breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
"What are you doing here?" She looked at Edith warily.
Edith said, "I heard the Langley family was all here. I came for the truth about what happened back then."
Maria glanced at the doorway. Claire stood at the front of the Langley family crowd, clearly enjoying the drama. Meeting Maria's gaze, Claire rolled her eyes at her.
Maria had threatened her with her son repeatedly. Now it was time for Maria to pay the price!
"The truth is she deserved to die!" Nina was so angry she spoke without thinking.
Edith's expression immediately turned cold.
Nina's voice continued.
"Did you get Chris to do what happened to Langley Group?"
"If I'd known you were such an ungrateful wretch, I should've strangled you when you were little! The Langley family raised you all these years just so you could turn around and bite us?!"
Nina spoke as if Edith surviving to adulthood was entirely the Langley family's doing.
Edith narrowed her eyes, coldness radiating from them.
"What happened to the Langley family has nothing to do with me. But whatever you end up facing, you brought it on yourselves."
"All I know is that if you don't hand over my mother's killer today, the Langley family's future will only get worse!"
"You dare threaten me!" Nina's face turned green with rage, her finger pointing at Edith, trembling violently, looking like she was about to faint from anger.
Edith looked at her coldly. "So who exactly killed my mother?"
Anna chimed in. "Don't forget, Christopher has the donor heart Abigail needs. If you don't want her to die, you'd better hand over the person quickly!"
Seeing them still threatening her, Nina was about to lose it again when Maria yanked her hard.
"What are you doing!" Nina was displeased.
Maria had remained calm throughout.
This concerned Abigail's life and her own future wealth and status. She couldn't be as mindless as the rest of the Langley family.
"What happened back then isn't something we can explain in a few words," Maria said. "If you want to know the truth, give me two days. Then we'll go to your mother's grave and explain everything face to face."
Maria hadn't expected Edith to appear suddenly. She could only try to buy time.
Edith looked at her suspiciously.
Maria said, "I won't gamble with Abby's life. But I need you to promise that once I hand over the killer, you'll have Mr. Hale release Abby's donor heart."
Before Edith could speak, Anna agreed first.
"You said it yourself. If you try any more tricks, I'll have Christopher cut that heart into pieces and feed it to the dogs!"
No matter how good Maria's acting was, hearing this made her face darken. She gritted her teeth and said nothing.
"Edith, let's go. Staying around these people might upset the baby."
Anna turned and linked arms with Edith.
She hadn't wanted Edith to come down in the first place. Christopher would handle the Langley family's affairs—Edith didn't need to worry about it.
When Nina said those things earlier, Edith's emotions had clearly fluctuated too much.
For the sake of Edith and the baby, Anna couldn't let her stay around these people any longer.
After Edith and Anna left, only the Langley family remained in the hospital room.
Mike was finally released, both arms cramping painfully.
"You all saw it—that's Edith's attitude. She hasn't considered herself part of the Langley family for a long time," Maria said.
Mike looked displeased. "She never really was..."
Maria cut him off. "Mike, Abby is your only daughter now. Are you going to watch her die?"
Mike's words stopped abruptly. He turned to look at the person in the hospital bed.
Because of Edith's appearance, Abigail's already pale face had grown even worse. One hand pressed hard against her chest, as if she could barely breathe.
"Abby..." Mike couldn't help but worry.
Maria said, "She's fine. The doctor said this is normal. As long as she doesn't get the heart transplant, every time her emotions spike, she'll suffer like this for a few minutes."
Hearing this, Mike watched Abigail's painful expression, his eyes showing genuine distress.
He sighed helplessly. "If Christopher won't give up the donor heart, what can I do? The Langley family can barely take care of itself right now."
What happened back then involved too many people in the Langley family. If they revealed it, they'd be trading the entire Langley family for Abigail's life.
Even if he agreed, the rest of the Langley family wouldn't.
"The Hale family isn't the only one in this world with that kind of power," Maria said.
Mike frowned. "The Sanchez family definitely won't help us."
Maria walked to his side and traced a few strokes in his palm.
Once Mike realized what she'd written, his expression changed drastically.
"You want me to go to him?!"
Mike's reaction caught Nina's attention.
Nina stared at Maria suspiciously. "What scheme are you plotting now? Haven't you caused the Langley family enough harm?"
Maria ignored her, gripping Mike's hand tightly.
"He's the only one who can save us now. If Christopher can find a donor heart, he definitely can too!"
Mike's face was filled with disgust. "Don't even think about it! Even if it means death, I won't have anything to do with him!"
Maria looked at him for a moment, then released his hand, looking hurt.
"So you still haven't forgotten Dione. All these years, have you blamed me in your heart? Blamed me for taking her place, for not even giving you a chance to regret it?"
"Besides him, no one can save Abby and the Langley family."
Dione's face appeared in Mike's mind, a trace of tenderness flickering in his eyes.
But immediately after, he thought of the nightmares that had been plaguing him lately, and that tenderness vanished completely.
"What do you want me to do?" Mike asked.
A smile appeared on Maria's face. She whispered a few words in his ear.
Mike hesitated for only a few seconds before agreeing.
Faced with Nina's questioning, he only left her with one line: "Don't worry. The Langley family will be fine soon."
Upstairs in the hospital room.
Anna was too worried to relax. As soon as they returned to the room, she called for a doctor to examine Edith.
After the examination confirmed that both Edith and the baby were fine, Anna finally relaxed and sat down to chat with Edith.
Halfway through their conversation, Edith suddenly felt an inexplicable palpitation and frowned slightly.
Anna noticed her expression and couldn't help wondering if the doctor had missed something.
"Edith, are you uncomfortable somewhere? It must be from getting upset by those Langley family people!" Anna fretted and moved to call the doctor again.
Edith suppressed the strange feeling in her heart and shook her head.
"No need. I just suddenly thought of something else. I'm not uncomfortable."
When Dione passed away, she'd had this same feeling...
