Chapter 237
Chapter 237
Claire's laughter made everyone in the Langley family inexplicably uneasy.
Someone couldn't help but slam their hand on the table. "What are you laughing at!"
Claire stopped laughing, but the mockery on her face remained bright and clear.
"I'm laughing at how stupid you are. A bunch of idiots."
"You..." The man pointed at Claire's nose, furious with embarrassment.
Claire said, "Didn't Mike want to call Abigail? Go ahead, call. You'll find out soon enough."
Hearing this, everyone's hearts sank in unison.
Doubt flickered in Mike's eyes too.
Claire had never gotten along with the Langley family. The only thing that could make her this happy was the Langley family's misfortune.
And now she was urging him to call Abigail...
Mike looked at her suspiciously but still called Abigail.
Given the Langley family's current situation, he couldn't think of any other solution besides asking Christopher for help.
Mike's call went through, but no one answered.
Mike's expression darkened. He tried calling Maria instead, with the same result.
He became even more certain something had happened!
"I'm going to the hospital." Mike stood up.
Nina sensed trouble too and stood with him.
The Langley family members headed to the hospital.
When they reached the hospital room door and saw the guards outside, the Langley family members all stopped in their tracks.
"Who are you people? What are you doing guarding Abby's room?" Nina demanded.
The lead man recognized her and said, "Mr. Hale asked us to watch here."
He glanced at the crowd behind her.
"If you're here to visit Ms. Langley and Mrs. Langley, you can stop here. Only Mrs. Nina Langley and Mr. Mike Langley may enter."
The other Langley family members who'd come were current Langley Group shareholders. They'd followed only to find out immediately if the Langley family could still be saved. Hearing this, most of their hope was extinguished.
"What does this mean? Chris had you guard here to protect Abby, and now you're controlling the Langley family too!" someone protested.
The man's expression didn't change. "If anyone wants to force their way in, they're welcome to try."
Just then, the hospital room door opened from inside.
Maria, hearing the commotion outside, came out.
Because of yesterday's events, she and Abigail had barely slept all night. She looked haggard.
Seeing Maria's condition, Mike and Nina couldn't worry about anything else and quickly went inside.
The rest of the Langley family tried to follow but were all blocked by the guards at the door.
Everyone turned to look at Claire.
Claire couldn't be bothered with them. She took the elevator upstairs to visit Edith.
In the hospital room downstairs.
Abigail sat propped up in the hospital bed, with Maria and the other two surrounding her.
"What happened? Where's Chris? What are those people at the door for?" Mike's brow furrowed with worry.
Nina pressed urgently too.
"Did you make Chris unhappy? The Langley family is in trouble now. Only Chris can help us. If it has anything to do with you, apologize to Chris immediately!"
"The Langley family is in trouble?" Maria's already haggard face grew worse.
Mike told her about Langley Group's situation.
Hearing this, before Maria could speak, Abigail's venomous voice rang out first.
"It's all that bitch Edith's fault! She caused this!"
Abigail's eyes looked dark and sinister as she stared at Mike. "Dad, why did you keep her back then? If you hadn't insisted, she would've already..."
"Shut up!" Maria cut her off in time.
Abigail bit down hard, remembering the guards outside, and swallowed the rest of her words.
Maria turned to Mike. "Christopher already knows everything about Abby and Edith."
Only the three of them knew about having Abigail replace Edith.
She didn't spell it out, but Mike understood immediately, his face going pale.
"Knows what?" Nina could tell they were hiding something from her.
Maria wasn't in the mood to explain to her. She could roughly guess Nina's reaction after learning the truth and didn't want to deal with it.
"Mom, all you need to know is that we can't count on Chris anymore. It's all because of that bitch Edith."
"Edith?" Nina was confused.
Maria had already looked away from Nina and turned to Mike.
"You said Langley Group is also in trouble. Now the only ones who can save Langley Group are those people."
Mike gritted his teeth, unable to speak for a long while.
"Mom, and my donor heart," Abigail reminded her.
Maria nodded. "Also, Christopher has already found a donor heart that matches Abby, but he wants us to trade the truth about what happened back then for it."
Mike's face went even paler.
Nina didn't know what had happened, but seeing their grave expressions, she knew it wasn't good news.
She looked at Maria's calculating expression and started cursing.
"It's you again, you curse! Ever since the Langley family got involved with you, nothing good has happened! Before you came, we never had this much chaos!"
"You want to drag the entire Langley family down with you? What does what happened back then have to do with the Langley family? If you dare say one word, just try it! If anyone's going to die, it'll be you two, you and Abigail!"
"Grandma..." Abigail saw Nina lose it for the first time. Her face went completely white, her heartbeat racing, looking overstimulated.
Abigail had thought Nina truly cared for her.
But now it was clear—what Nina valued was her relationship with Christopher!
Now that she knew Christopher wouldn't help anymore, to Nina, Abigail had become a useless waste that could be discarded at any time.
"Don't call me Grandma! Neither of you mother and you are any good!" Nina scolded.
Seeing Abigail's breathing grow more and more labored, looking like she was about to have a heart attack, Maria's face darkened. She slapped Nina hard across the face.
"I'm not a good person? What makes you any better? If you hadn't given your consent back then, that bitch wouldn't have died so quickly!"
"All these years, without Abby maintaining the relationship with the Hale family, the Langley family would've been nothing long ago! What right do you have to talk about her?!"
After Maria slapped her, Nina came to her senses, furious. "You bitch!"
They were about to come to blows in the hospital room.
Suddenly, the hospital room door was pushed open from outside.
"Ms. Edith Langley, Ms. Pinkman." The man opened the door for Edith, respectfully stepping aside.
Hearing the commotion at the door, Maria and Nina simultaneously stopped and turned to look.
They saw Edith and Anna walk in one after the other.
Mike, who'd been silent for so long, was the first to react. His face dark, he strode over.
"You little wretch!" Mike raised his hand to strike Edith across the face.
The moment his arm went up, the man caught it with quick reflexes and pressed him against the wall, making him look pathetic.
"Let go of me! I'm disciplining my daughter—that's my right! Who the hell do you think you are to interfere!"
Mike tried to struggle but was pressed down even harder.
