Chapter 87 - His Betrayal

Joey

I was sick to my stomach as soon as he said the name, then I remembered the voice I heard arguing in the background while I was sitting in the car after the accident and realized it was her. “Yeah I am familiar with her, that was my ex-girlfriend. Are you telling me it was her that smashed into my car?” I was feeling horrible, Josie got hurt because of this! My dad put his hand on my shoulder, “This is in no way your fault and I want you to remember that. I recognize that look, and I want you to get those thoughts out of your head. If this was Angela, then she is to blame for her actions and not you.” I smiled up at my dad, I know he is right, but it still hurts knowing Josie got injured.

“We are still investigating everything and getting statements so I can’t give you a definitive answer but it looks like she was involved, yes. I have a few questions for you, and I will be back to speak with Ms Watts as soon as she is able to answer a few questions. I am not sure what this situation is at this time with Ms Fierce but I would suggest you and Ms Watts get a restraining order just to be safe as soon as you are able to.” The officer spent the next 15 minutes asking me questions, which I had no problems answering. Once he left the nurse and doctor came in and said that they were going to keep me overnight just to be safe and if everything looks good in the morning he will discharge me. I wasn’t too happy staying in the hospital but I would be close to Josie so I didn’t argue. I asked my parents to go see if anything has changed with Josie since I couldn’t leave my room yet.

As I sat there processing everything that I have learned, I started to question is this a curse that comes with males in our family. My dad had his issues with Karen, and she tried to have my mother killed after trying to break them up didn’t work. Now here I am with an ex-girlfriend who was just as dangerous. I hope my brother is spared from this someday and I am wrong. My mom and dad came back to the room, my mom said they would run home and get me a few things I needed, especially a change of clothes for the morning. They did tell me that Josie was still doing well, but she still hadn’t woken up yet. I needed to see her, I hated to have to ask for second hand updates.

After my parents left I hit the button that called the nurse, I was going to make an attempt. When the nurse came in I asked her if she could help me go to Josie’s room so I could see her. The nurse looked like she wanted to object at first, but I explained my situation and how I needed to see if she was okay. I think the whole situation pulled on her heart strings a bit and she came over and got me unhooked enough so I could get into a wheelchair. Once I was in the chair she told me she could only let me visit for 20 minutes and then she would need to bring me back to my room. I nodded because I was just thankful she was going to help me. I sat in the chair as she wheeled me around the corridor to a different room. She told me to wait while she made sure it was okay for me to come in.

It seemed like seconds before the door flew open and my Aunt Amy flew at me and pulled me into a hug. “I am so thankful you are okay too Joey, I was going to come check on you but I was waiting for Josie to wake up.” I just held her in the hug mainly thankful she didn’t blame me for how things ended up. “Your uncle and I are going to go down for some coffee while you sit with her for a bit. I think it will do him some good to walk around a bit, he has been sitting in this room since they brought in.”

After they walked out my Uncle Dean laid a hand on my shoulder and gave it a bit of a squeeze before he walked with my aunt down the hallway. The nurse rolled me up to her bed and again reminded me she would be back in 20 minutes to return me to my room. I thanked her and then turned back to Josie and my breath caught.

Besides the scrapes and cuts on her face she just looked like she was sleeping. I took her hand in one of mine and I used my other to lightly caress the side of her face. “This was not how our day out together was supposed to go Josie. I am so sorry you were hurt in all of this honey and I will do everything possible to protect you from this happening again.” I just sat there hoping that maybe she would wake up and look over at me and smile. I would give anything to see that smile at this point instead of my own memories of it. I had to appreciate the time I was given to sit here with her and be thankful she was going to be okay.

I laid my head down next to her and just thought about the day she went to dinner with me and how I was scared that she just wanted to remain friends after she had time to process everything. After I finally realized the feelings I had for her were not just friendly but deeper I thought not having her in my life as a friend was bad, that realization made things so much worse. Thinking I might have lost my chances with her about killed me, mainly because I knew Drew was actually a good guy and I had to give her time to make her decision on her own. I heard the door open and the nurse saying it was time for me to go back to my room. I sighed and picked my head up to kiss her hand and say goodbye when she squeezed my hand.
