Chapter 88: His Betrayal

Josie

“This was not how our day out together was supposed to go Josie. I am so sorry you were hurt in all of this honey and I will do everything possible to protect you from this happening again.” There was nothing but darkness around me but I have been hearing voices, my parents, strangers I can’t recognize, and then Joey saying this to me just now and I was wondering why. I sat there pondering why he would say this to me. I remember our day when he brought me to school, at lunch with me, stood up to Angela when she confronted us at lunch, the rest of my day in classes seemed fine. I continued to think through the fog of everything, what happened today? I remember Joey and I walking out to his car and him again reassuring me we would be doing something I enjoyed and not sport related. I hate how awkward sports are to me and how clumsy I am, and Joey knows this which is why he understood why I asked for what I did. I shook off that thought because I needed to figure out what happened.

I thought about us in the car and we both had our seatbelts on and then everything went dark. That is where everything stopped, what happened in the car. I struggled trying to remember, glass smashing……, pain……., voices calling for help……. Something happened there and now Joey is apologizing to me and telling me he will protect me, but protect me from what? I need to wake up, I need to find out what is going on. I feel someone holding my hand firmly and I know it’s him, I just need to get my eyes to open so I can let him know I hear him. I hear the door open and a voice tell Joey he needs to go back to his room. NO! I need him to know I am here. I focus all my attention on his hand in mine as it feels like he is about to let go. I put as much focus as I can and squeeze his hand before he lets go.

“Josie! Are you awake! Open your eyes baby please! I felt that! I felt you squeeze my hand, please open your eyes for me.” I focused next on opening my eyes, it was hard but I started to open them to light that was too bright. I squeezed my eyes shut and mumbled “Light” Joey told whoever was there to shut off the light, I tried again and was finally able to focus on his face. It was cut up and it looked like there was bruising, actually I was noticing I hurt too now that I could see him. What happened? “Joey, what happened to you? What’s going on?” I noticed the nurse walk out of the room and turned back to him.

“I will explain the best I can in a minute, I think they are going to want to check you out now that your awake honey. You have been out since the accident, I had to coax the nurse into letting me come in here to see you because I had to get all my updates second hand.” The doctor at that moment walked in, he instructed the nurse to bring me out into the hall for a moment and another nurse stepped in to assist the doctor. As we were waiting my aunt and uncle rushed up asking what was going on. “She woke up right when the nurse came to bring me back to my room. They are checking her out right now.” My aunt and uncle smiled and hugged tears in their eyes. We knew she was okay, it was just so nerve wrecking that she was not awake yet.

The doctor walked out after a bit saying the nurse was helping her adjust in the bed and we could go in as soon as she was done. When the nurse came back out I asked if I could have a few more moments with her before returning to my room and she just smiled and nodded. My uncle pushed my wheelchair back into the room as we entered to see her sitting up more.

“Can you guys tell me what is going on now? What happened to us that we ended up in here?” I knew she would want to get this information now, I looked over at my uncle and aunt and they motioned for me to fill her in on what I knew. “Josie, how much do you remember exactly?” She told me what she struggled to remember before she was able to wake up and it was where I blacked out too until I woke up in the car. “We were pulling out of our spot in the parking lot when a car smashed into mine. I woke up in the car being told to hold still until paramedics could get us out. You were unconscious and I couldn’t see you or look at you baby, I was scared that I could lose you and I couldn’t even be with you.” I took her hand in mine and she squeezed it, tears in her eyes as well as in mine.

“Wait, someone hit us, are they okay too? I can’t believe I didn’t think about the other person! Joey, please tell me the other person is alright?” I sort of felt a bit bitter thinking about the question because I still couldn’t believe she was capable of being this malicious. “Yes, the other person is actually fine.” Josie could see the change in my attitude immediately and then asked, “Joey, who was it that hit us?” I looked up into her eyes and I had such regret as I finally told her, “It was Angela. Angela hit the car intentionally.”
